  • Why was it that everyone who used the Mask of Life died, and why was everyone who was touched by it cursed? Was this truly the price that had to be paid for its godlike power? In this video we explore the thematic significance behind why everyone who ever used the Ignika was forced to sacrifice their life in some way or another.

Honestly, I know everyone felt the noble sacrifice of Toa Matoro and yet, I wonder how Turaga Nuju felt... Nuju has been one of my favourite characters of the entire franchise : speaks in bird Rahi tongue, telekinetic powers, mastery over the forces of frost, and generally one of the most lucid and conscious of the Toa Metru/Turaga of Mata Nui.
Did he knew this would happen? How did he felt? Was he proud because his pupil, his Right Hand, accomplished his Destiny in Peace, two great values for Ko-Matorans? Or was he sad, so sad, that his own student, the one he was especially proud of along with Kopeke, had to die?
    Probably both.

Turaga seem to be somewhat aware of the general outlines of their proteges' destinies methinks, especially since Vakama's vision in Time Trap has probably made Toa Metru aware that some of the Matoran in their their care will eventually become Toa.

I don't know if he would have known it would happen, but he was definitely deeply sad when it did. In the novel Downfall, there's a really nice small scene of Nuju quietly mourning Matoro in the privacy of his Knowledge Tower, as wresting with the fact that, although his sacrifice was necessary, Nuju had to admit to himself that in his heart, he had trouble believing it could ever be worth it to lose his closest friend

I actually made a theory video about that! While I don't think they knew for sure what their destinies would be, I think the Turaga definitely made their best guesses as to who would be destined to become Toa. ruclips.net/video/Y9WAPzj8CeY/видео.html

Turaga Nuju is also one of my favourite characters of the Bionicle Universe. My second favourite Turaga next to Turaga Vakama.
After 2004, Bionicle start to get more violent, and although the third virtue is destiny, its hard to see great characters have to die as part of the story.

Certain death as a deterrent makes sense. The only purpose of the mask was to be used to heal Mata Nui (and potentially also Spherus Magna), i.e. a selfless act for the mask's bearer. Risking the possibility of the mask falling into the hands of an individual with even a shred of selfishness might doom the entire MU, millions of lives, so it makes sense that the only beings allowed to obtain the mask are those that are so determined to heal the Great Spirit that it does not matter to them if they live or die - ultimate selflessness.

    Here's a wild idea for a video:
Gen 1 and Gen 2 both have a Mask of Creation
Gen 1 and Gen 2 both have a Mask of Time
What if the Mask of Ultimate Power is the Gen 2 version of the Mask of Life, if the consciousness inside it was evil from the start rather than ambivalence turning to heroism?

I do like this trope a lot. The whole "there's a catch to receiving this power". See it a lot in Kamen Rider. On a side note, I also like to think that the reason why the users of the Ignika die is something akin to a metaphor of sorts. That in life, there is also death. That sort of thing.

    • @Arcanist_The
      @Arcanist_The Год назад +2

Tbh death barely matters in Kamen Rider. Especially in modern rider where everyone and their dog is resurrected through power of friendship, determination or just bland ol Deus Ex Machina. So I won't compare it the same. The idea of sacrifice is an overarching theme and motif of the series tho so I give you that.

@@Arcanist_The Whoops, meant to say I like the trope of having a sort of catch to gaining said power. In Kamen Rider, it is mostly about the Riders going berserk or something related to their health. Sorry I didn't specify that, will edit now. 😅

Unlike the other great masks of power, the Kanohi Ignika is a living being, like the Krana witch isnt the same thing as the masks of power of the Toa.
The explanation is this: Evil beings are destroyed or been cursed, Toa`s like Matoro haves to fullfill their destiny for saving the great spirit Mata Nui, althought the death of a Toa is a extreme thing to do, despite the reason.
And yes, the Kanohi Ignika judges and decides the destiny to give to all beings who tries to wear the Mask of Life.

They are away. The following of the story should have told about a civil war between benevolent Great Beings willing to let free the Agori, Glatorians, Matorans and Toas. And the other side, leaded by Velika, willing to be revered as the new gods. And apparently Takanuva would have, again, taken a very important role in all this.
