I am one of the original Metal Method students and I can't believe I found u on u tube. I learned alot through your lessons and can't believe I found u on u tube . Wow
That's awesome. I'm glad that you found me too! It's always fun when someone reconnects after all of this time. I've continued to do this since '82 but for the last few years I've been less visible. When people stopped reading guitar magazines I lost a big chunk of my audience.
That's awesome Brian. Thanks for hanging in there with a very long video. I'm glad that I was able to help you out when you were first learning to play.
@ I’m grateful that you taught some very important fundamental skills that are relevant to my current playing!!!! Much appreciation & reverence for you!!!
Same here as many. Purchased the original cassette course at 14. Waited like 10 weeks in eager fashion for their arrival and they quickly took over my life and study for quite some time. The updated 'NEW' video versions when they came out as well. So many of those lessons learned are still in the forefront of my playing and practice today some 40 years later. Doug isn't just an 'instructor' as many of the plethora of Tube tutorialists try to be. Doug is a family member. The older brother you never had that taught you the secrets no one else would share. Guitar was a very mystical enterprise back in the day. As one of your cohorts adamantly described, the keys to the Lamborghini lay within what was at the time a simple idea to bring guitar to the masses that blew up like crazy. Friends of friends would be buying and passing down Doug's instruction, and they became the absolute blueprint of virtually every form of 'study at home' guitar courses, online or otherwise. Godspeed good Sir. It's been a pleasure, and I'm glad it continues. Your legacy is secure.
Thank you very much for that description. As I quoted John Lennon in this video, "Life happens while you're making other plans." I look back and think how fortunate I am to have stumbled onto a very pleasant way to make a living. Wow.
34:24 thanks Doug. You did for me exactly what you said you could. And so did I. My life truly took a turn when I found metal method. Always grateful to you.
Hell dude, you are a ROCK STAR!!!! You helped me also. And I never bought any of your lessons. But you did send me a packet in the mail about the lessons. Man I bet I looked at that a million times a day in the 80's. And achieved similar goals. Local band was enough for me too. But if I hadn't of stared at that picture of you. I wouldn't have been able to see my own self doing it. Man, you should be very happy at the impact you had on so many average Joe's like me & many others. And it's an honor to see you still on RUclips & be a sub! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Doug I credit you for the HUGE improvement on understanding the basics of guitar. Yes i confess when i first started to learn guitar(before i discovered Metal Method) my older brothers had Mel Bay books. The main understanding to unlock it were your books and tapes back in the 1980s. A nd yes i have read the Hal Lenord books for different instruments. But because of the original Metal Primer lesson i could read the notes on the fret board. By the way i would apply some of that knowledge to bass and mandolin as well as tuning any of those instruments to theirseves. Another one is the tuning method. Good teaching good Metal Method. Thanks.
You're very welcome. Many of my students from the 80s have become incredible guitarists. It's an honor when they don't need my assistance playing guitar so I enjoy sharing my experience and hope to motivate them to continue moving forward.
You're welcome and thanks for the compliments. I know who I'm talking to because I've been there. I'm glad that you appreciate my work. That means a lot.
Thank you for sharing all this knowledge. I appreciate the encouragement as well as the information about your band Hawk. Thank you for everything that you do for us. 🎸🤘🏽
I'm at a spot in my life where I'm wondering what's next. I know I could be better, but I also know I'm better than average. Figuring things out is really hard when you're the only one that can do it, and I really appreciate you, and the time you took for this video, and the time you take with all your videos. Helping people to be better is one the best and most noble things anyone can do
Yes, I did watch it till the end, some things you shared I was not aware of, and it was great to hear you share how you CAN become what you want to become, if you work your plan. My career has been very kind to me, I wanted so bad in my 20's to play arena's and hear my band's name cheered from the crowds - we played some really large, sold out clubs and shows, but I was not willing to "work without a net" - now I'll never know what may have happened - but I love to play, and without a doubt what you have shared is how I have structured my life and career - have a plan, work the plan, have a backup, and when you hit the bumps, DON'T QUIT - DON'T TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER! - great video Doug, and thanks for the insite from your path in life!
Metal Method has been a big help in getting me started, when I didn't know where to begin with guitar. This was a great video, with a lot of cool insight. You're the man, Doug 🤘🤘
Doug, your message is inspiring. As one of your Zoom students, I am attaining my 50-year long dream of becoming a competent guitarist. You’ve helped me come out of the stone age of technology by learning Cakewalk and Guitar Pro 8 and using modern equipment, such as DAW and Spark 2 amp. I can now confidently play along with backing tracks and stay in time. I keep learning more difficult pieces and believe that I can create my own music. It’s not just the technical help, but also your values of discipline, hard work, goals, sacrifice, and commitment that inspire me. Having taken your year-long Complete Guitar Course a few years ago, I would say that immediately following up with your personal coaching sessions would have been more efficient and productive. It really helps put things together. Thank you!
You're welcome Steve and I as told you during your last lesson you're a pleasure to work with. Steve knows that the secret to progress is to show up to his lesson every other week and be prepared. Since we began working together a few months ago he hasn't missed a lesson except when I boneheaded one. Keep up the good work!
I stayed to the end Doug!! Love the advice and it is foundational. I grew up in the 80s with Metal Method and waiting for the local corner store in my small town to have the latest guitar mags. Sad to see the end of some of them recently like Guitar Player. You’re a legend! Thank you for doing what you do!
Very interesting video Doug. I was one of the special few that made it to the end of the video.....I hope I can put your advice to good use! Thank you for continuing to make these videos! 🙂
Glad to say I made it through to the end. Not gonna lie, I'm actually going through one of the worst of times lately and really needed to hear some of that. Many thanks.
today December 11 th 2024 i just discovered you and the lessons. Not going to make a sandwich lol but I'm glad I found you. although I've been playing since 4, there is still new things I can learn from you. the Beatles is what started me playing the guitar because I wanted one at age 4 keep rocking! and teaching bro
Thanks Doug, I have been one of your students since 2007. I really like you system and your delivery of information. I would also like to pat you on the back for being honest, sometimes reality is not what people really want to hear. Again thank you
I have your Metal Method on DVD and have always loved your lessons. You Rock Doug Marks! I'm not going to lie I'm noodling while watching, partly your fault.
I bought the original course years ago and others. Unfortunately I just never stuck with it. (Constantly beat up hands from work etc contributed to that) Now that I am semi retired and have alot of extra time, I'm currently working my way through the lastest course and making good improvements. Not out to impress anyone, just playing for my own enjoyment. And I would like to thank you Doug. You have helped me tremendously.
Thank you for sharing! It’s funny how life presents things… I have been visualizing different guitar exercises and patterns in my minds eye and then I see your email and this video… I definitely feel inspired and more determined!
Thanks. Yes, there wasn't an accessible internet when I started in '92. That was a different world for sure. I didn't begin using the Internet until around 1995.
Thank you Doug, I am one of what is hopefully a lot more than a few that stays to the end of your videos. You have always been a fantastic teacher, and I like how you laid that out. I still enjoy reading guitar magazines to this day, and I like how that was part of your root beginning of starting Metal Method. Even outside of practicing guitar, I will attempt to visualize what I want to do, set a realistically obtainable goal, create a plan on how I can complete the goal task, accept any sacrifices that are necessary to complete the goal, and stick with it until the end.
Love it! When I mentioned that people were "hanging up on me" it seems to have struck a nerve. The average view on this video is twice as long as it usually is. Very good my friends!
Hey Mark, I, too, am a guitarist who was a student of your original Metal Method Courses....I bought the entire collection of pamphlets/cassettes and it established my foundation. Thank you
I think the philosophy of business can also apply here. The RPT acronym - Resilience, Pragmatism, Teamwork - REPEAT! In other words, don't give up, know when to pivot and surround yourself with others that believe in the cause. No huge band ever made it without an even bigger team working behind the scenes. KISS, GnR, Metallica, you name it. It was never just the guys you saw on stage that lead to their success. Grow your network as well as your talent.
Visualization and confidence go hand in hand!!!! I’m still working on teaching wild lizards to fly …& hey Doug, don’t take this in a bad way, but the ending felt kind of like a Mr. Rogers moment!!! 😂
That's great. I do have my sweater on right now. Yes, speaking from my heart can come off as a little corny. That's okay, it makes me emotional to think that what I'm saying can make a difference.
I’m an original student too. I had cassettes and then VHS. He use to wear this weird necklace of a lady looking thing. Like some kinda of witchy looking thing. I use to wonder is this dude into witchcraft 😆 I don’t know how he got that good in those days. This dude was incredible!
Thanks Don. That "lady looking thing" brings back memories. Nope, not into witchcraft and never was. On the other hand, my ex-wife Londa, designed my image. She was and is into mysticism. Thanks for the compliment about my guitar playing.
I long ago stopped making goals. Somehow something would always take the rug out from under me. Murphy's Law or whatever it is. I never reached a single goal. But guess what? Looking back, I got to experience doing what I loved, even if I didn't get to be "successful". Success wasn't what others were expecting of me. Success was enjoying what I was doing while I was doing it, no matter what. I was successful. Never rich, never famous, not even getting by most of the time. But it's been a fun ride and guess what? So far the ride still ain't over! :)
I appreciate your insights and vulnerability in relating your experiences. Good on ya! You should thank the gal who worked so hard that you could practice. You know that old joke: What do you call a musician without a girlfriend? HOMELESS.
You're absolutely correct. When I described her support through the lean years I gave credit where credit is due. On the other hand, there came a point when I began contributing big time and she was able to devote her time to her passion for art.

I love you, Doug. You helped me immensely some 40 years ago. You are still banging it.❤
Thanks Adam. I'm still having fun. That's what motivates me. I appreciate your comment.
