What are you talking about? The song is "itoshi no ellie" by southern all stars. It was released in1979. This song is covered a lot, I guess that song you said is one of them.
I've seen a couple people say that he played Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence by: Utada Hikaru, but I believe he used the original by Ryuichi Sakamoto here. If you've not heard the original it's only an instrumental, look it up I do recommend!
