    Took a second watch to realize pulling down was pulling the balls inward.

    Old stream engine's have relief valve with two ball weights that spin faster when throttle faster. Hence the old saying when you're really flyin, you're "going balls out".

      You just need an assistant to pull on your string as you start your backswing. Simple.

    Wonder how much of a difference it makes in a vacuum. Do other forces still cause slight variation

      Being in a vacuum has no effect. Other than reduced friction.

      my understanding is it should make little to no difference. the only difference being air friction which is minimal at these speeds

      the only thing that changes in a vacuum is air resistance. there is no air resistance in a vacuum.

      No difference. This is about mass in motion. The only thing that would change is air resistance...

      The only difference is that it will spin longer since the air resistance will be lower.
