Hi Mike you would be a good guy to
ask. Have you seen the video from Spain of the male bear attack a sow, who had a very young cub. It was extremely aggressive, and they both tumbled of the mountain. The male died of his injuries shortly after. Do you think that he was out to kill the sow? That’s what it it looked like to me, he was savage with her. It was a prolonged attack.

Yes sir, thank you so much, mama bear was protecting her babies with her life she would die to keep them alive she cannot take any chance must attack on instinct & that’s exactly what she did and nailed it because big bear was after the cubs, no doubt! Thank you for coming on tonight and helping us with this. I saw footage of it after it happened and I’m worried for 39 and her cubs. I know 856 is known to kill cubs, but it seems that it happens a lot and it’s not just him. Nature is tough to witness sometimes.
This follow up is great. Thanks for this. I’ve been at the falls…virtually…for three years now and follow everything quite closely. I hope that 39 gets both her cubs back. Nature is a tough taskmaster and is tough to watch at times.
At first, it appears 856 was just sauntering around but I trust 39s judgement and instinct that she felt uneasy from the start. The other adult bears in the frame also appear to be uneasy and keep looking over as they perhaps thought 856 would try to go after cubs... Again. I just wish she had simply taken them away to another area quickly. It really is very sad! 😢
The male bears will circle the mama & cubs, looking for weaknesses and options to attack. That is a red flag ~ when a male bear starts to circle, it’s bad, bad bad!!!!!

Thanks Mike for jumping on Live and discussing 39/856 bear encounter. I learn every time I hear you talk about Katmai;s ecosystem. I love watching explore b/c it is an unrestricted glimpse (what cam ops point to) into a world of wild bears. I watch because it is wild. I watch because these bears are NOT captive. They are in their element doing bear behavior and I as a viewer I able from my computer to watch and learn about wild animals in their habitat... warts and all.
After the fight with 856, there were only a few brief glimpses of bear 39 on the cams in 2022 and she was also seen at least once in July 2023. When I was at Brooks Camp in July 2023, I dug through the July 2022 bear monitoring notes--the National Park Service has conducted a long-term bear monitoring study at Brooks River since 2000--and found this information:
"At the falls July 8...[39] attacked bears that weren't even very close...When 856 walked by she attacked and he fought back..."
This much we know from the bearcam video. However, the notes continue:
"This caused separation of [the cubs]. Later she was seen with one [cub] and the other treed at the falls for days. Next time I saw her (7/13), I thought I saw a [cub] but then never saw her with it. It later turned up deceased across from [tree stand on the cut bank]."
I hope this info adds a bit of closure to that chapter in 39's life. 856 didn't apparently kill any of 39's cubs, but the event forced the separation of one of them. There are no observations or records that I have yet seen that give us any idea why 39's other cub did not survive.
Raising cubs is a difficult task. Cubs are vulnerable to a variety of dangers. If anything, this story reminds us of the risks and challenges that mother bears and their cubs face everyday.
I know this was a horror show to 99% of everyone who watched this. What I saw was a mom who was protecting her cubs. Not sure I understand why it appears she instigated the encounter. Of course we don't know what happened off cam that made her charge him. She did take a beating, and that is sad. As a mama bear, that's kind of part of her job description. As a bear, we know she will heal quickly. She was doing her job. The cubs? They ran for their life! Hopefully they ran out and up. Loved that the old man got out of breath! Nature is very tough! Even tougher to watch. I am not cold hearted, just try to be a realist. This happens everyday off the cams to animals we don't know and care about. We forget that these cams, even this cam, is a wild cam. These are wild animals. Doing wild, natural things. I'm hoping that those two little ones are safe and reunited with mama. For their sake and the future of BF bear community. This is a life lesson for mama and the kids. And maybe 856 might think twice before taking on a mama and cubs? Probably not for another few years but, we are seeing his age. I never, ever mean to offend. These are my opinions only. I am so grateful to explore for bringing these wonderful cams to our lives. Nature isn't cruel, its just hard to watch. 856 was doing what instinct tells him to do just as the mom was doing what her instincts told her to do. As always, be blessed and stay safe.

Someone in the website chat said that they saw 39 and 1 coy shortly after the fight. No news at that stage about the second coy. 39 was bit on the neck but not deep enough to bleed.
Hopefully this is correct and more good news about second coy will follow.

Just checking to see if there is any update on 39 and the 2 cubs. Last video she ran into the woods and 856 was chasing a cub, but didn't catch it.
Maybe they ran up trees. They can hang for hours , rough hood tho. Probably be some family stepping up

Just started watching a few days ago and wanted to say thanks for this differentiated and elaborated explanation. Can/do bears hold grudges? Like can 856 recognize the cubs and her mom in two or three weeks and act different towards them or would he treat it like a complete new encounter? All the best from Germany.
I don't know if they can hold grudges. However, bears are certainly smart enough to recognize and remember each other individually across days, seasons, and years. In two or three weeks, 856 probably would remember 39 and cubs. He may not react differently though. I think it would depend much on the family's proximity to him, his mood, hunger, and other factors. But at Brooks River bears become more habituated to each other over the course of the summer, so conflict is more common now than it will be in September, for example.

I cried when I watched 814 Lurch killed Holly’s COY. 856 has killed 402 and 132’s cubs at the Falls. Nature is brutal. It is tough to rear offsprings among all big bears.
39 had fought hard but there was no competition between these two. I hope 39 can reunite with her COY. I wonder if 99, 912 and 913 would help their mother 39 if they were around. Bless this family!

I think I saw 39 with one cub last night around 1:35am est 07/09/2022 but I’m still trying to get to know the bears but I definitely think that was 39? I’m worried now since there was only one cub I saw :(
There was another mama with a single cub very close when the fight happened.
Hours later I saw a bear with no cubs and a nearly severed right forepaw. I assumed it was #39. She looked like she was in serious pain.

You really become quite attached to these bears but am reminded they're wild animals. Nature can be terribly cruel. But man can be too. Cannot escape these things I suppose.
Is it the case that the sow was later seen with one cub? I suspect that she had a close call with 856 previous to this encounter and that made her defensive

I think 39 tried to pull a "grazer" but just didn't have the size nor reputation to back it up. Do I think 39 took her cubs elsewhere up river? I do. She will take them as far as she can until she can likely no longer smell 856 and vice versa. That to me makes the most sense in the bear world.
Are there any sitings of #39 since the altercation with 856?

After watching the video several times from the point where #39 and #856 head to the shore, I see 856 come ashore first (3:35), then you hear hm growl (3:42) and at (3:44) I believe that is one of the cubs that he is chasing, then at (3:50) I think that is #39 who confronts #856, you hear more growling at (3:53), just long enough to buy her cub enough time to get away (4:04). I am posting this 16 days later and I would think you would have seen #39 and at least one of her cubs by now if they had survived this ordeal.

She came back w no cubs. I’m now convinced one did die during that video. It’s so hard to like 856 💔
They all have different personalities. It wouldn't be interesting otherwise. Yes what happened is sad. But nature is beautiful even when it is savage.

856 was just passing by and it didn’t look like he was interested in the 39’s. Unfortunately 39 aggressively charges 856 and he responded. 39 took her chances at the falls and it was not a good decision with all the big boys around, especially 856. Hopefully 39 will recover from her wounds quickly and finds her cubs if they’re still alive. Bear reality can be heartbreaking, sad and devastating, but it’s out of our control so we must accept and move on. Be in peace.
He looked interested to me. He was eying them.
If the bear police witnessed this tragic event they would cite 39 for perpetrating violence and cite 856 for attacking the cubs with intent to kill them.

I know there are other places in Katmai where the bears can feed on Sockeye Salmon. I watched a video from a photographer, here on RUclips. He said it was a good way from Brooks Falls.
I am here to protest the nomination of 856 for fat bear week. He gets fat eating bear cubs... baby bears! I don't care if it's 'bear behavior' and considered normal. I am disqualifying him. So there.
