  • This is a comprehensive video on the Firefighter Ladder Bail Emergency Egress Technique. The 3 most commonly taught methods will be discussed and demonstrated in detail -Including the "Hook 2 -- Go 4", "Butterfly/Extended Reach" and the "Toe Hook". Also included will be review of the "Ladder Slide".
For the Ladder Bail and Slide to be effective, firefighters need to proactively place ground ladders as early as possible to the windows/floors that members are and will be operating on. Beyond proper placement, firefighters need to safely train on this procedure long before it would ever have to be implemented in the field - Determine and become proficient on the technique YOU like best before it's necessary to use it in an emergency!
Train, Stay Prepared, Be Aggressive, Make the Save - SURVIVE!

Without knowing all the details it is difficult to answer your question or comment on this disaster/tragedy. Was the building scheduled for demolition? Did Firefighters know if it was? Were people trapped inside or threatened? It is the job of Firefighters across the globe to save lives, even if it means putting theirs at great risk to do so. The collapse of the World Trade Center Towers on 9/11 is a prime example of that and the First Responders that perished that day will always be remembered for their unselfish sacrifice in the performance of their duty to save others.

While I know there's a lot of training a firefighter goes through, I didn't know about the head first ladder bail. But what if it's two or three, or even more stories up? This training is simple. But when you're up high, exiting a window head first can be scary. Don't you think?

Yeah I've bailed out head first in training 3 stories up and yes it can be intimidating, but you work to master the technique at safer and more comfortable levels first so if you have to perform it in a life and death emergency you can execute it properly and effectively at any height - Burning to death would be a lot worse! However one of the reasons I'm such a big advocate of escape/bailout kits is that they are safer and in some cases easier to deploy than a ladder bail (if you practice properly) and they can be deployed at any height where ladders are limited.

I'm only 13 but I would like to be a firefighter when I am older. Do you have any advice that will make my goal of becoming a firefighter easier/quicker?

Maylee Larkin try to find a local explorer post you can join to give you more insight and knowledge about the job, the explorer post can first let you realize if this is the job you certainly want to do and then secondly, the post can teach you many valuable lessons and skills needed on the job if you decide you are going to stick with it.
