Nah this is bs. Renting out a rent controlled apartment for double the price is bad enough. But kicking out your friend to do so is just scumbag behavior. And it is totally fair to point out that she makes 3x as much as her. Rent control is not for already well off ppl to make money. It’s for ppl who can’t afford it to have a home in a decent area. Hate this take

As DV victim that is still trying to legally untangle themselves from their (yes, physically, not “just” mentally) abusive ex husband, I’m pretty torn about that email…
I’ve been facing homelessness and don’t have a way of getting an apartment because my ex husband got evicted from our shared apartment after I left him - so I have an eviction on my record I can’t do anything about until I either pay 6 months worth of rent or get the debt assigned to my husband, but not hopeful about that right now honestly…
I know I would be so wildly grateful for someone giving me easy access to an affordable apartment, and would have used the 16 months in a more wise way…her friend should not have told her in that way at all.
Idk, maybe neither of these girls are good friends to each other and need to work on that without each other in their lives, because this isn’t the way friends treat each other and also feel kind of weird calling a DV victim who was just blindsided by a friend an “ungrateful cunt”
Yeah - idk, just wanted to say something for the DV survivors who maybe felt weird, too.

Wow as someone who hasnt lived in NY but has lived in the city. Yeah I've also lived in extremely overpriced apartments full of roaches and other pests. She should not have gotten another pet in this situation. That was the most irresponsible thing she did. Also rent is never guaranteed even with a lease. I know people who's apartment has burned or other things and they're out on the street immediately. This sucks but is not worth pissing off your friend. Ask if she'll let you stay a few extra months until you sort things better. And don't adopt more pets before your u have a stable living place for the love of God. Most irresponsible thing ever!

Also for all the angry responses thinking this girl was treated unfairly losing this apartment. Please listen back to the oldest guys we fucked episodes. There's girls worked two jobs and lived in the armpit of NY city with mice everywhere and a possum maybe one time in the ceiling.... Not to sound republic but pay your dues bitch! No one is responsible for your safety and housing but you. Be responsible for your actions. Maybe work two jobs and get a roommate for a bit. Or move to somewhere out of the city. I feel like no one responding has ever actually listened to this podcast. Also I've moved every year of my life for like 15+ years. Moving is normal in our day and age where no one can afford buying a house. Be mad at your government not these realistic smart business savvy ladies.

that email was alarming, the lack of self-awareness and the level of immaturity are astounding!

as someone nowhere near new york and without having been through the apartment hopping lifestyle, thx for putting into perspective how ridiculous that first story was with the 16 month 24,000$ favor was, wow.

It’s really disappointing. That money is more important than human decency and friendship and taking care of each other.
This is how capitalism divides and conquer everyone
I’ve had lots of money I’ve been the poor one as well. I’ve lived in New York Montreal, Berlin, Barcelona I know the game and I know that the world is just becoming a bad place because people don’t care about each other. Two years is definitely long enough to care about someone.
In an ideal world she could’ve offered the apartment to her friend under the stipulation. It was just for x amount of time till she’s getting back on her feet.
But trying to scam money out of a third-party person who is renting that apartment for twice as much so that you can make some money and not giving a shit what happens to your “friend “is wild to me. I can’t believe that you guys would whole heartedly believe that only the poor friend is the problem.
The problem is that the rents are raising and becoming unmanageable and every city all around . And capitalism breaking communities apart, and forcing people to have a mentality to only care about themselves
I think there’s many ways to look at this, but I don’t think every single finger points at the poor friend.
We need to put a lot more emphasis on community and caring about each other. Bottom line if this world is going to become a better place.
