- Captain Elwood Euart lost his life after helping to save a number of other men at the time of the sinking of the US Army transport SS President Coolidge.
Captain Euart’s intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military force of the United States and reflect great credit on himself, the 43rd Infantry Division and the United States Army.

Could you please give me more of a backstory on the priest who presided over Captain Euart's funeral? You said that he was a former Chief of Chaplains for the US Air Force, and based on the way you have told the story seems that he was in said former position when the funeral Mass was held. This would have been impossible if the funeral was held in 1942 as the US Air Force wouldn't exist until 1947 and through WW2 was the US Army Air Corps. So was the funeral held far after the fact, or would he eventually serve as Chief of Chaplains after he lead the funeral? Sorry just a bit confused here on the timeline. Thank you for the amazing story of heroism and Christian sacrifice.
His funeral was held after his remains were brought back to Rhode Island in 2015
