I've waited for this for a long time, the song really fits the character. Malcolm is at his core a survivor, sneaky enough to be tollerated by the heroes while sometimes working with villains. He's like a chameleon, he is a better person when he's around Oliver or Thea, but he's a bad guy when he's working with his buddy Damien. There's a sense a regret from him, you could see that despite the fact that his intentions towards the city and his loved ones are good, he goes about them in a completely wrong way. He is my favourite character in the Arrowverse but I believe that his "death" made sense, they didn't know what to do with his character anymore. I still hope that he somewhow escaped and he is going to appear at the end of the series, Lionel Luthor style.
Before Ra's or Slade, there was the Dark Archer. This guy's actions have shaped so many lives, it's hard to believe he may actually be gone for good this time.

This is the best tribute video I've seen. I love Malcolm Merlyn! He's my favorite arrowverse character. His moral compass is so complex. The death of his wife ultimately made him evil but is still capable of working with the good guys for mutual benefit

(Those being "A Dangerous Mind" by Within Temptation for Calculator, "Murder" by the same artist for the League of Assasins' leadership throughout the seasons, and "Perfect Insanity" for Gotham's Clone Bruce.) Oh, and perhaps for another villain tribute, I would recommend "Unstoppable" by Motionless In White...perhaps for a Goku Black and Zamasu video or someone else, I know you'll think of someone it would fit, DBZ or otherwise!
If you think about it the Green Arrow would not exist if not for Malcolm he kind of helped create him in a way. He kind of put Oliver on the path to becoming The Green Arrow when he sunk the Queens Gambit.
Yep. When Malcolm realised that Robert Queen was trying to stop The Undertaking he had The Queen's Gambit sunk and didn't care if Oliver died on it too since he considered him collateral damage. And that not only started Oliver's journey to becoming first The Hood, then The Arrow then The Green Arrow but also set Sara on the path to becoming a member of the very same League of Assassins Malcolm himself had left then she became the first Black Canary then the White Canary and joined the Legends of Tomorrow.
Yep. He also gave Kovar the gas in the Season 5 flashbacks which were set a year before Season 1. And since Justin Claybourne Simon Morrison aka Adrian Chase aka Prometheus's dad was on The List he must have worked with Malcolm on The Undertaking which was probably why Claybourne infected Lamb Valley with tuberculosis then sold the cure at prices the infected couldn't afford to pay just so he could make more money and kill the infected people just because they had less money than him. Just like Malcolm wanted to destroy The Glades to stop anyone else being killed there like his wife Rebecca had been by Brick Claybourne probably wanted to destroy Lamb Valley to get rid of the people he considered a "blight." Claybourne IMO was worse than Malcolm because if Malcolm had only killed the evil people in the Glades he would have been a hero. The problem was there were also some innocent people in The Glades and what made Malcolm evil was that he didn't care if the innocents died as long as the evil people died with them. He was willing to sacrifice the innocents and considered everyone in The Glades evil because they didn't help his wife before she died. Malcolm's "sacrifice the innocent as long as the guilty die with them" philosophy must come from his time in the League of Assassins because that's their thing. Claybourne on the other hand was just a greedy scumbag who intentionally infected people with a disease only he had the cure for so he could make money from selling the cure and because he was a rich snob who believed anyone poorer than him deserved to die. So Malcolm's also indirectly responsible for Simon Morrison becoming Prometheus too.
That's one of the things that made them great enemies. They wouldn't be without the other as the story with many archenemies. I keep saying every great hero needs a Nemesis and Merlyin was Olivers Nemesis. It's why I hope that he will come back one day.

And "preternatural" is the proper term: it deals with created beings spirituality performance level to sum it up nicely... and thus he's calling in favors from evil entities. He's not a good man, not by a long-shot.
I'd actually argue that deep down Nyssa is a friend of his: she got him out of that gang by dissolving it forever, and the sparring sessions also back up that assessment- otherwise one of them would have drenched the throat of their blade in the lifeblood of the other. Then again, Nyssa's ex-girlfriend, Sara, did mention that that organization was eroding her conscience and she had to bolt, or lose her very soul forever to Hell. So maybe that had something to do with Nyssa's melting of the ring and freeing him forever from that gang- as well as every single member thereof. The "gang" I am referring to is the "League of Assassins/Shadows" in the stories for clarity.
Back in season 1 what made Merlyn different to Oliver was that back then yhh sure Oliver killed lots of people and we all know how that went down in season 5 but Oliver did not really let any innocent people get into the crossfire ( i might need to revisit season 1 to do some digging on that) Merlyn did not care at all.

He will be back no doubt as the villian for the final season, Just like Reverse flash returned in the crossover for Barry. Just like Kilgrave will of course be back in JJ as you don't kill off her nemesis in the first season. I really do enjoy and think accurate the touch of occultists as gangsters that happens so often in modern film- and that is accurate: they are involved in booking hits; just as the Mafia does. Hence the idea of these evil men as wizards and thus as gangsters fits quite well indeed.
