  • Interview with Lemn Sissay, by Tony Wilson, on Granada TV, sometime in 1989, (I think). Copied from a VHS cassette stored in my loft for almost 30 years, so a bit wobbly, at times.

Fascinating insight into a young Lemn, painfully close to the traumas of his youth, with touches of anger and a lot of humility. Brilliant!

Just Incredible, zooming out and looking at the bigger picture. Takes my breath away he does

He is amazing. He is not angry, he is passionate about what he does. He is defining who he is. Read his book about his life and his journey. I am so impressed with him and what he has achieved. Well done Lemn.

Having just read “My Name Is Why”, I can’t get over how lovely and engaging he is. It would be so understandable if he were aggressive and defensive, but he seems so willing to connect.
Thinking that here he is only 2-3 years out of that awful institution, makes me want to reach into the screen and give him a big bear hug ❤️

I remember him walking down car bank Street backs hagfold with no shoes on in early 80's. Only ever known him as Chalky, terrible childhood, but one of the nicest, kindest people you'll ever meet.

It is a pleasure to watch Lemn Sisay. It took my attention three years ago on TED RUclips and I start following his works...... and likely my production company was hired by Biklia Award in Toronto to document the event and I learn that Lemn will be a Guest speaker on the event. I was so happy and lucky to see him in person and express my gratitude and appreciation. Such a gifted and strong person!

Really good interview and it's good to watch one from when he was so young. A charming man.
I would say that maybe a third half of his audience are people who have been or are in care. His play sounds interesting. I wonder if it's still around. Thanks for uploading!

    Lemn,
It's more than i could destribe how sorry i am what you 've been through.
I thank God for the gifts we are blessed, with in you/through you.
Yes u still are learning, and we all should keep learning!
Lemn I would like to encourage you to support multiratial adotion that will be done RIGHT!
Because we will have much more less fear of 1 or few black CHILDREN/black people amoung massa of white people.
Because we need to get used to one another.
This is cevilization/ the life we have now. Let us mix and learn from one another.
It's possible, slowly but surely you/we can bring good changes in this world. Look where we come from!
NOW imagene how beautifull our world would be, when nobody is no more a stronger =black/assians, white/ Arabics=all races.
That's how God intendant this world to be!

I am annoyed by this interviewer. Do you know how frustrating it is to continuously have to defend why your experience is part of the black experience even though white people can connect to it?

Did the guy not have time to ask Lemn how to pronounce his name before the show, very lazy interviewer.
