You should watch some of his interviews it's actually amazing. He said that he believed the best comedy comes from comedic situations in which everyone takes themselfs deadly serious. Which exactly the humor of Naked Gun/Police Squad😂.
In the network TV adaptation (and only there for some reason) they had extra lines. When Frank was leaving, the dock guy says "Don't you want the address?" Frank replies "Not on a cop's salary!"
He used to be a serious actor, which is why they cast him in Police Squad. To have a serious actor deliver comedic lines. It worked like a charm, however, the show didn't last long, but Naked Gun was based off of that.
Leslie Nielsen was one of those rare breed of serious, dramatic actors who were only known for that type of work who ended up thriving in comedy and became mostly if not only known for that for generations after. Other examples are Ted Knight, Eddie Albert, Carroll O'Connor, Ed O'Neill and Werner Klemperer.

What's weird is watching Leslie Nielsen in his earlier movies. When he was younger he did mostly dramas, but your brain is so wired to think of him as funny you keep waiting for him to say something outrageous or silly. Alas, he never does.
Yeah. When--after years of only seeing Leslie Nielsen in funny roles--I first saw his starship commander in 'Forbidden Planet,' a disciplined, no-nonsense military man, I briefly wondered if he was the same guy. I wonder what sort of serious roles he might have performed, had he not embraced comedy. The sadistic, insulting drill instructor in 'Full Metal Jacket' (played by R. Lee Ermey)? The Marine colonel (played by Jack Nicholson), in 'A Few Good Men,' known for the infamous 'You want the truth? You can't handle the truth!' quote? Yes, it's hard for one to visualize Nielsen speaking these lines, without smirking (if one is unaware of his early roles), but do you have thoughts as to other roles he might've played?
Thanks for the video. I'm gonna go watch those movies again for the first time in years. Didn't think I could still laugh like that. Leslie was brilliant.
A lot of his best lines were all about having massive brain farts, which is weirdly relatable. Like the joke where the woman says “I am the luckiest woman alive” and he answers “so am I”. Love it
They left out which was probably his greatest line of all time. Dutch: "Who are you and how did you get in here?" Drebin: "I'm a locksmith... and I'm a locksmith."
That was from Police Squad. These quotes are from Airplane and the Naked Gun movies. If we include Police Squad quotes, this would be twice as long as it is. "We would've been here sooner, but your husband wasn't dead yet."
jsigman87 How dare you insult a genuine member of the Police Force......Nordberg was framed, simple. I think the real tragedy is that nowadays no one can take a joke. By being perpetually offended, SJWs have sucked the joy out of life. They also made it much MUCH harder for comedians to be funny without being labelled: racists, bigoted, homophobic, transphobic, islamophobic, and/or any other phobic they think will do the most damage to that comedian'd career.
The entire series of Naked Gun, the Airplane movie and Wrongfully Accused were funny and Nielsen’s delivery was just incredibly funny. George Kennedy who played so many heavies in movies was just as good. Great writing, great casting and perfect timing. I miss this lost art of real entertainment.
Watched naked gun in the early morning on a ferry going to work with my mate and laughed our socks off the steward had to come in and see what was so funny I can honestly say that it was a good start to our working day even though we had another 18 hours to get through until we got to the hotel, happy days
