I miss my 8-track and vinyl of this Album. One lost with all my vinyl collection to my exs greedy family and the 8-track to an eviction. My childhood shattered and gone. Thank you for sharing I have tears of joy.
I had a good friend of mine back in the 70s who was a huge fan of Pink Floyd, and I use to hang out over his house and listen to Pink Floyd for hours, he knew everything about Pink Floyd, well I remember listening to this on 8 track and then hearing it without this solo on the radio one day, and as I'm listening, I started noticing something seemed different but I couldn't put my finger on it, well I ended up getting that album and finally realized what was different, so I showed it to my friend who was the huge Pink Floyd fan and when he found out it was someone else doing the solo he took that 8 track and put it in the street and ran over it, he couldn't except someone else playing the solo that wasn't in Pink Floyed

This is a prime example of why 8 track tape went by the wayside. Notice how much the music drops out and comes back and also notice the apparent lack of frequency response as well as (only if you have a good ear mind you) the background tape hiss. Now if you where to play the LP vinyl record of this same track on this same system, you wouldn't want the inferior sound of what this produces.
Dude I think he taped it over the air out of the speakers. Otherwize you wouldn't hear the tape being pushed in at the beginning. Not a good way to compare sound fidelity to your first pressing promo vinyl.
No one is going to claim 8 tracks have superior sound quality to vinyl or any lossless digital format. However, the UK EMI tapes played in a quality deck like Akai, Wollensak, and top of the line pioneers might surprise someone who's never heard the format before.
Do all 8-tracks of this album have this version on it? I just got a copy today, and it does have the guitar solo on it, but that blog post made it sound like not all copies of the 8-Track had this version on it.
Cartoonyworld109 I can verify that not ALL versions do, since I bought a red tape produced by Columbia in Canada without it before purchasing the British release that included it. I'd guess (not sure) that a telling factor would be whether any given release has "Pigs on the Wing" listed as a single track or in two parts. The Canadian version that I bought, for instance, has Pts. 1 and 2 of "Pigs on the Wing" listed separately; so do the Spanish and Italian 8-tracks made by Harvest and the Australian tape made by CBS. The British cart (Harvest 8X-SHVL 815) has "Pigs on a Wing" listed as one track, and as heard above, includes the solo. Though I don't have the American cart (Columbia JCA 34474), it looks like it has "Pigs on the Wing" listed as a single track, so I suspect it includes the solo as well. Maybe that's the one you bought?
Cartoonyworld109 Cool! Haha I did some research back when I was first trying to track the tape down. After one tape failed to turn the solo up I figured I'd do my best to make sure it didn't happen again
I'm confused...if the solo was put between part one and part two, how does it matter with the loop thing, unless part two is followed by the solo at the end, followed by part one at the start again...unless I'm missing something, the medium is irrelevant, surely?
slumpytube The 8-track version begins with Part 2, which is linked to Part 1 directly by the solo. I think you're right in arguing that the different format need not have led to any change in the music, but as it happened, it did -- the solo certainly wouldn't exist if Roger Waters hadn't been looking to loop the music for the 8-track
Sean you are the confused one! This version doesn't begin with Part 2!!! It begins with Part 1 and then the solo bridges it to Part 2!!! And the whole thing is at the beginning of Track 1??? I don't get it at all? It doesn't have anything to do with the looping except maybe Roger didn't want Part 1 to ever follow Part 2 so he put them together in the right order at the beginning of the album. Thanks for posting it though, I think it sounds pretty good, especially since it seems like you taped it from the speakers right, otherwize I wouldn't be hearing you put in the tape at the beginning of the video right?
is it true that you cannot rewind or fast forward an 8TRACK to desired locations until the whole album ends and only then you can rewind that damn hing but only to the absolute beginning?
Aidan The Lover Boy O'Dwyer My deck has a fast forward function, though it's pretty imprecise. No way to rewind. Of course, you can jump from track to track anytime, but that similarly leaves you pretty minimal control over where you land
I think what actually happens here is the two parts joined together are presented at the front of the album rather than part two finishing it. Sometimes the 8-track format required screwing around with song order.
That's right! Pigs on the Wing is combined, with the usual Part 1 being directly bridged to Part 2 by the solo, while Dogs and Pigs are both broken up into 2 parts due to space limitations. The overall structure of the cassette is as follows: Program 1: Pigs on the Wing (Pt. 1/Solo/Pt. 2), Dogs Program 2: Dogs (conclusion), Pigs Program 3: Pigs (Conclusion) Program 4: Sheep
The full story is: Snowy White has heard that the band was searching for a live guitarist, so he came to the studio. They were just recording that song and had accidently deleted Gilmours solo. So they told Snowy “Hey, if you want the job, show that you can play. Here's a song, listen to it and play a solo over it“. And that solo actually made it on the UK and US Versions of the 8-Track Album.
I think what actually happens here is the two parts joined together are presented at the front of the album rather than part two finishing it. Sometimes the 8-track format required screwing around with song order.
I'm sorry. The fidelity is way to good to be from an 8 track. They lack the high end and are full of tape hiss. Plus the meters are not moving in the right way. What is the real source here? It is not an 8 track.
It's from the 8 track! This is an old video by now, but my memory is that this was converted to mp3 directly though line out and that I then replaced the room audio in my cell phone recorded video with the directly recorded audio. I'm genuinely surprised to hear someone say it sounds good -- the high end is fair but I think the hiss is present for sure 🤷♂️ So far as I know it's been released on the Snowy White greatest hits CD, but that's OOP and I'm sure you'll agree this is well below CD sound quality. Neither the meters nor the track changing mechanism on my player work properly but I think it sounds pretty good in person for what it is
Mother, do you think they'll drop the bomb? lmao. But seriously that song should not have been split up for Animals, bad call by the band or whoever decided. Lost a dynamite lead, Snowy White was made for them, somehow.

Sean Connery's Moments of Wisdom
I do have the American tape. Unlike yours, my tape is black. You seem like a Pink Floyd Animals 8-Track expert!
Cartoonyworld109 Cool! Haha I did some research back when I was first trying to track the tape down. After one tape failed to turn the solo up I figured I'd do my best to make sure it didn't happen again
a lot of European releases didn't have it according to a book I read -only the American 8 track has this
@@MichaelHansenFUN Only the UK release (as the OP has in the video) and the USA release have the Pigs On The Wing full version with solo.
sound quality not bad at all, better than a bad record player
Worse than a decent compact cassette though
no deflection on DB meters
There's a slight little movement not much just to barely a little up and down
The camera work! WTF??!!!!
Seems like a Harrison’s
Thanks for posting it though, I think it sounds pretty good, especially since it seems like you taped it from the speakers right, otherwize I wouldn't be hearing you put in the tape at the beginning of the video right?
is it true that you cannot rewind or fast forward an 8TRACK to desired
locations until the whole album ends and only then you can rewind that
damn hing but only to the absolute beginning?
Aidan The Lover Boy O'Dwyer My deck has a fast forward function, though it's pretty imprecise. No way to rewind. Of course, you can jump from track to track anytime, but that similarly leaves you pretty minimal control over where you land
The reason it got kicked in the butt by cassette I guess ;-)
Yeah but you could leave that 8 track in and it could play for hours nonstop
@@fakevideos6002 yes but(some) cassettes could be set to continuous play (~);}
Most titles that I own on 8 tracks are well worth listening all the way through.
I don't get it... Shouldn't "being played on a loop" mean that the second part of the song would lead into the first ?
I think what actually happens here is the two parts joined together are presented at the front of the album rather than part two finishing it. Sometimes the 8-track format required screwing around with song order.
i like
😲🎸💗✌️🤙🤜🤛
So, from the beginning, it goes Pigs On the Wing Part 1, Snowy White solo, Pigs Part 2, then Dogs…..Is that right?
That's right! Pigs on the Wing is combined, with the usual Part 1 being directly bridged to Part 2 by the solo, while Dogs and Pigs are both broken up into 2 parts due to space limitations. The overall structure of the cassette is as follows:
Program 1: Pigs on the Wing (Pt. 1/Solo/Pt. 2), Dogs
Program 2: Dogs (conclusion), Pigs
Program 3: Pigs (Conclusion)
Program 4: Sheep
Yeah 8 tracks weird back in the day LOL
That's a nice solo, but imho can't pair up to the one on SW's "Bird of Paradise" that I hold as an all time classic musically and tonewise....

I wonder why Gilmour didn't play the bridge? Anyone know why?
I read that Waters and Wright accidentally deleted Gilmour’s solo and he wasn’t around to do another, but White was.
The full story is:
Snowy White has heard that the band was searching for a live guitarist, so he came to the studio. They were just recording that song and had accidently deleted Gilmours solo. So they told Snowy “Hey, if you want the job, show that you can play. Here's a song, listen to it and play a solo over it“. And that solo actually made it on the UK and US Versions of the 8-Track Album.
I thought Snowy White did that solo?
if it's supposed to connect the loop, shouldn't the 1 & 2 verses be reversed?
I think what actually happens here is the two parts joined together are presented at the front of the album rather than part two finishing it. Sometimes the 8-track format required screwing around with song order.
Mother do you think they'll drop the bomb?..
SO DAVID GILMOUR!!
I'm genuinely surprised to hear someone say it sounds good -- the high end is fair but I think the hiss is present for sure 🤷♂️
So far as I know it's been released on the Snowy White greatest hits CD, but that's OOP and I'm sure you'll agree this is well below CD sound quality.
That thought was lost sound...
I think a solo on this track in the album would have been great, just wish it was a Gilmour solo.
That's definitely not David Gilmour playing that solo.
The elite are always gonna be the walking pigs that they are 😂 cool tape deck . Never seen one like it 😊
o
If you didn't care....
Why are those needles not in the red!?!? ....Just kidding 😊
