We ( just me & wife) are planning a 3 week trip from US in Aug- Sep, and doing research on places to stay, visit etc. we plan 2 weeks in Swiss and the 3rd week may be in Vienna. Not decided yet. The places you covered are already in our list of spots to visit and reinforces our plan. From what I could gather it looks like you stayed in Zurich as a base the entire trip and did day trips. Is that true? That would have been a lot of time spent on travel to cover Lucerne, and Interlaken etc. I hope I am wrong. Did you stay in Lucern / Interlaken and if so any suggestions. We normally book thru Air BnB for all our travels and for Switzerland being very expensive are looking for cheaper options if possible. I checked "Achesa homes" and found apts not available around our time. Also their website is not easy to see available days in the calendar. Any other accommodations you considered and if so details / names would be appreciated.

The accommodations in Zurich or Bern are cheaper as compared to Lucerne or Interlaken. Also these places popular tourist destinations themselves so availability is also an issue. For visa you need ticket booking,hotel booking etc. I thought so. But you said you did after visa. That's good. Please guide how you did it .
You suggested Hostel for accomodation etc for SOLO travelers. But will it be safe w.r.t. theft, share toilet or any life hazards?
