  • The BMW G650GS can be a great touring adventure motorcycle, if you set it up the right way.
    In this video we'll be covering whether or not two people can tour two-up on a BMW G650GS, how we've done it in the past, and how we're doing it in the future in a motorcycle cross-country adventure traveling across Italy.
    Touring two up on a G650GS won't be without challenges if you're planning on taking a passenger on the back. I'll share all of the modifications done to set this motorcycle up for comfortable touring, even two up. I'll also share the challenges we've faced touring two up on a G650GS, and how we're overcoming these challenges.
    Remember, you don't need a $25,000 BMW 1250GS to tour comfortably on adventure motorcycle, even with a passenger. You can do it on a G650GS for 1/5th the price. I'll show you how.

    They are amazing. I did 17,000 km over two months. Up to Alaska, then to the Arctic Ocean in Canada, all the way to the Mexican border and then to Los Angeles. From sea level to 4,300 meters above sea level.
    Temperatures from 4° to 40°.
    Amazing bike

      Amazing bike? I mean, yes, but not just that, amazing trip! Good for you man, that's incredible!
      Next week Saturday I have the sequel to this video coming out, which will go over what I've since upgraded/changed/kept from this original setup.
      If you have any tips for your touring setup I'd love to hear from you.

      @@YouMotorcycle g’day. It certainly was a great trip and the bike was absolutely brilliant.
      My touring set was all Givi. I used the canyon soft panniers, an aluminium topbox, tank bag and a waterproof bag on the back. On the bike I added bark busters, sump guard, radiator guard, headlight guard, centre stand, quadlock charger/mount and plug for my compressor.

    The only thing I’m not loving about my ‘15 G650GS, aside from the overly convoluted way of changing the oil, is an issue with “hot” starts, where the bike doesn’t want to start after being driven short distances. Probably not a concern on a long tour, but it’s an annoyance I haven’t yet solved. Anyway, your trip sounds amazing! Safe travels.

    • @YouMotorcycle
      @YouMotorcycle  Год назад +1

    Greetings from Colorado, USA, again, Adrian! I've now two G650GSs. Bought the low-mileage (3K) '14, then found a '15 with a legit 180 MILES!. Original owner, climate controlled garage. I am, now, deep into G650GS arcana. Great vid, and I'm fascinated by your planned trip! I assume you're shipping the bike by... air? I found some exchanges -- was it ADV Rider?... can't remember -- about people with great experiences taking their bikes with them on the Queen Mary 2, Cunard's dedicated ocean liner. Though it sometimes does other trips, it is primarily travels the historic route between Southampton, UK, and New York, USA, and back. No crating needed, and your bike's on the ship with you! I thought it would be amazing to get to the UK, and explore north, and/or take the Chunnel to the Continent. Like many others, I follow Noraly "Itchy Boots" Schoenmaker, and she's done both air and cargo ship transport. I'd greatly enjoy knowing the logistics part of your trip, even if it isn't G650GS specific. Don't know if it is already on your itinerary, but it is absolutely on many biker's Italy bucket-list (including mine): Moto Guzzi, on the shores of Lake Como, in Mandello del Lario! Has got to be the world's most beautiful "factory town!" Best, JFG

      Hey John, amazing to hear that you are now fully committed to the G650GS life! haha. Oil changes aside, what a great bike. She'll be flying by air on the same flight as me, and we will (eventually) make it to Mandello Del Lario. Already have my place to stay booked! Re: logistics - I'll absolutely do a video about this, but I'll wait until I clear customs and get the bike back in Italy so I can paint a full picture :)

      Thanks for the reply, Adrian. I look forward to your thoughts, and video (hopefully) from the Guzzi factory / museum. Guzzi in general, and the Mandello factory in particular, were saved by Aprilia’s ownership and deep pockets. The “Gs” started life as the “Fs,” and the “Funduro” before that! The international effort included Austrian Rotax engines and chassis being assembled in Italy by Aprilia, ending up either as BMWs or Aprilia Pegasos. (…though the Aprilia Rotax adaptation was a 5-valve head.) Best, J

      @@YouMotorcycle Hi Adrian. My bike is a 2011 model which I've had for 10 years. I originally experienced the "hot starting" problem, which is due to the decompression lever. If I keep the battery well charged, then it isn't an issue.
      A recent problem was the oil tank leaking, which was caused by overfilling. When I drained the tank to replace it, there was 0.5 litre too much! Advice is to measure the correct amount when changing the oil and then leave the level alone until the next change!
      Hope the trip is going well. Sorry I missed your live Q & A but I did watch the recorded version. Some useful information there.
      Best regards from the UK.

    Hello Adrian: finally they decided to put a partial brake on the motorcycle's accelerator. In British models such as the Ariel, for example, since the 1950s, there was, for models with greater displacement, a brake on the accelerator containing a soft spring acting on a brass shoe controlled by a soft thread screw locked against falling or being lost due to vibration. . It does a lot of good. On long trips, the pulse reaches moments when it becomes unbearable to hold the accelerator any longer, in the rain and very cold weather, even more so when we are traveling in a group, not knowing the entrances or exits for the detours. If you let go of the accelerator, you are left behind and lost from the group.

      I can't find it either. I think it's been discontinued and removed from the manufacturer's site completely. Bummer. On my second G650GS I put a cheaper Dominator exhaust... it's okay... I had to make a custom baffle for it though because I found it too loud.

    Accessories are getting very difficult to find for the 650GS in Australia - and when I can find them the prices are ridiculously expensive. Companies like Shad, Givi, Hepco & Becker. and Touratech have pretty much everything luggage wise either discontinued or a special order and a minimum 6 month wait. I managed to find some Touratech panniers and mounting hardware - but at close to $4k I'm not sure it makes much sense. On top of that I'd like to add an aftermarket top case - which is easy enough to find - but the required mount is completely out of stock for all the major brands - with no ETA for the next shipment available from any of the distributors. I'll probably end up just waiting it out for a mounting system and going with a soft luggage option as I'm off road 70% of the time anyway.

    • @YouMotorcycle
      @YouMotorcycle  Год назад +1

      Must be an Australian thing. See if carpi moto ships to Australia. They are in Italy. I'm in Canada. I got my givi mounts from them when the euro was momentarily weak to take advantage of the exchange rate, but they are in stock both domestically and from carpi moto in Italy. Hope that helps.

    Hey Adrian, I need some advice from you or anyone else here in your audience:
    I have 2 bikes: a 1998 Honda PC800 and a 2016 Yamaha Bolt C-Spec. The problem is that both cruisers take me to the same destinations... and my friends are having fun going out for camping in the BC back-country, and even planning a trip down to Washington/Oregon areas. They currently ride Suzukis DR650, KTM Duke, and BMW 1200 GS.
    While I'm trying to keep my current bikes, I'm looking to get a used bike that can let me join them on this trips. I came across three used BMWs, one is a 2005 BMW F650 GS with 10,000 kms on it, and the other one is a 2009 BMW F650GS Twin with 31,000 kms on it, both at the same price, and a 2003 BMW F650 GS Dakar. Here are the links to them
    2005 F650 GS: abbotsford.craigslist.org/mcy/d/langley-township-southwest-bmw-f650gs/7626551450.html
    2009 F650 Twin: ...oops this posting has expired, but I know it's still available as I'm in contact with the seller...
    2003 F650 Dakar: vancouver.craigslist.org/van/mcy/d/vancouver-2003-bmw-f650gs-dakar/7627882730.html
    I would appreciate your comments on these bikes as both are practically at the same price. My other option is to sell one of my current bikes to get a newer bike for the camping purposes....
    Looking forward to your comments, thanks!

    • @YouMotorcycle
      @YouMotorcycle  Год назад

      F650GS Twin all the way! Fuel injection, more power, minimal difference in weight. Ditch the PC800, that's my vote haha.
      Alternatively, mod the Bolt! Wind jammer, big sissy bar with a rack that would allow you to put a big bag on the back seat, small bag on the rear rack, and some saddlebags. You've just turned your cruiser into a nice touring bike, without having to sell a bike or make room for a third. Food for thought. Let me know whatever you end up deciding. I want to see how it all plays out!
      PS: When I finally sold my latest Harley, after five years, I bought both an F650GS and an F700GS, and I made a video talking about why I did this, and also referencing the G650GS, so this video might be of interest to you ruclips.net/video/LsM-jNoTiJY/видео.html
