For as long as I can remember I've wanted to make a plastic yoyo.
Maybe it's because I started with Yoyojams, but something about plastic always equated to fun in my mind.
So, when it came time to build my ideal plastic I wanted something that wasn’t just competitive, but also fun.
On one hand there were Yoyos like the YYF Replay/YYF Daydream, that in my opinion lacked the fun factor but had all the rim weight and stability you'd need to use it as a competition throw.
On the other, you had Yoyos like the Skyva, Premiere and First Base that were so fun you never wanted to put them down, however they lacked stability and spin time to truly be a viable competition option.
What I wanted to create was a plastic with both. A yoyo that was fun, but still had the catchability, stability and spin time fit for a competition Yoyo.
That’s when I decided to go to Shenzen China to the Magic-Yoyo factory. There I worked with their team of lathe engineers and Yoyo designers and we came up with 2 prototypes.
Despite my initial excitement I quickly realized that there still wasn’t enough stability in these yoyos for me to actively compete with them.
So once I went back to Australia, I requested a few more tweaks and reluctantly gave the go ahead to build the mold. What happened next?
It flopped.
The yoyo that came out was awful. Unplayable.
To elaborate, the Yoyo's pads seat was made too narrow that the pads would literally bulge out making the yoyo responsive. Additionally, the design produced a harmonic vibe that rendered the whole thing unplayable.
I couldn't in good conscience release this to the Yoyo community, so I requested another prototype.
However that wasn't as easy as you might think...
The reason it’s less common for Yoyo companies to make plastic yoyos is because the cost of a mold is astronomically high.
In fact, the cost of a single mold is generally enough to deter most companies from even attempting a plastic.
So you can understand the predicament I was in when I was now asking Magic Yoyo to produce not just one, but two molds before the Yoyo had sold even a single unit.
Concerned that Magic Yoyo might scrap this project all together, I was given one final design change.
This had to be the most radical yet.
The previous iterations of the Variant had remnants of the initial design which was meant to have finger spin capabilities.
While this was fun, this meant that precious weight had to be distributed to the inner body of the yoyo, while less material was left for the rims. Rim weight is usually what gives a yoyo it’s stability and spin time.
So now desperate, and on the verge of this collaboration failing before it even began, we completely redrew the design. Taking all the weight that was meant to give the yoyo fingerspin capabilities and adding all of it to the rim.
I wouldn’t be sure how this design turned out, but Magic Yoyo was getting impatient.
So we commissioned the 2nd mold, and the Yoyo was shipped out to me to be tested.

looks great! As a 5a thrower I have decided it's wisest to move away from plastics because they just can't hold up to repeated drops - even when I'm playing over soft surfaces I expect to drop at least once every hour if I;m trying anything vaguely outside my comfort zone, and plastics just seem to get wonky after a few hard shocks, instead of the dings that my single material metals pick up.
Totally pumped for your progress on the throw though, I'd love to try one!

Yup! We're getting a few others, still to be finalised. But we're looking at a dark grey and a Tiffany blue.

Colours aren't finalized yet, but we're looking at Dark Grey and a Tiffany Blue.

It is pretty thin, but we ensured that it had a long enough axle. Haven't had any issues with it yet and I've had it for months ;)

Got a question: is the bearing seat made out of plastic too or metal on that part? I had a replay pro and the bearing seat broke, still a little afraid of plastic yoyo because of that
Bearing seat has a meta hub to support the bearing but is surrounded with plastic. It's generally pretty unusual to have a bearing seat crack though, I'd suggest taking that bit of extra care, no yoyo is indestructible.
@@thebrandonvu yup it was the part supporting the bearing broke, probably from overtightening since that was my first unresponsive yoyo. Thanks for the info~

Hey guys. I really wanted an outlier Yoyo. I had just purchased a car when the pre-order dropped. Now It almost seems impossible to find any info on purchasing them. I’ve tried asking on social media but my post get deleted. It seems weird to create a yo-yo and give zero info as to how to purchase it. That is aside from the pre-orders...

I bought this yoyo and played with it for about 2 weeks! It was a great yoyo, until it wasn't. Every little ding with this yoyo will show up so if your not a fan of that dont buy a plasic yoyo. The baring came a little responsive but I just ignored it. After the first week I had dinged it about 3 times, but if you didn't know that than you would guess about 10! After the two weeks I dinged it and the gold part were the baring goes broke the plastic and made the yoyo unusable. Just a warning if you ding your yoyo at all I would look for a medal option.

you said it was specifically designed for.... then stopped and said it does finger spins but i swear you where going to say it was specifically designed for finger spins but changed your mind... are you sure your ok with this being the final product? why not fine tune it one more time and perhaps make it a good finger spins and say its one of the best plastics for finger spins. unless by doing so takes away from its stability. idk but either way im going to be critical untill i see more detailed assessment. Besides that i LOVE the shape, and the color, and style. I love plastics and i dont care about a little vibe. I wish you the best and i hope this becomes a real contender in the plastic category

I see where you’re coming from!
If you take a look at my description you’ll see where I elaborated further.
Pretty much, the initial designs were meant to have fingerspin capabilities, which is why I stumbled on the comment.
However after 3 costly prototypes we realised the stability and weight sacrifice associated with the fingerspins was more trouble than it was worth so we scrapped it all together and added all of it to the rim.
What you’re looking at is the finalised version. The 4th and best of the prototypes. It just so happened that sacrificing the fingerspin capabilities was the way forward.
If you want fingerspin capabilities, there are no shortage of awesome yoyos you can choose from. But if you want a stable, catchable, powerful throw that’s what the Variant was uniquely optimised for.
