Possibly the last time we saw the Chariot in this series. The scene where Don and Smith put aside their differences because they thought the end was near, was touching. Once they were rescued, though, Smith went right back to being Smith.
This episode becomes all the more touching with the recent passing of Mark Goddard on October 10, 2023. Reunited now with castmate Jonathan Harris in a new galaxy. I always loved both actors, and had a tremendous crush on Maj. West. Their contribution to entertainment has staying power. Love you guys so much.
Did not remember this one, but it did remind me of the Star Trek episode, so good context there. I see what you mean about all the missed character opportunities on the "Dr. Smith Show", it is actually weird how Penny and Will don't explore together. The idea of a robot guardian enabling children to explore an alien landscape is really cool, but where is Penny, learning to clean a space-ship with the womenfolk? Did not know about volcanoes generating magnetic fields so I even learned something.
Your Lost in Space series is really enjoyable! I've often wondered what was the huge attraction LiS had for myself and many others, and maybe, am starting to 'get it'; The appeal to children is obvious; A beautiful, loving, kind mother, a handsome, strong, powerful father, gorgeous big sister, her hunk fiance, sister and brother and to add the over the top screw ups; the weird uncle. And, of course, THE ROBOT! The immensely powerful friend. Anyone saying they didn't wish they had a robot is lying! So, take your pick as to which arch type you identify with! For me, without hesitation, it was Will Robinson! The stories were such that a 3 year old could follow it and good or survival of the family was a constant theme! And, in this episode, the props were getting much better!
I always identified with Will, since he was closest to my age! And yes, always wanted my own Robot buddy! However, when me and my friends played Lost in Space pretend, we always fought over who was John, and who was Don!!
@@Geezer-yf8hv We used to play it, too, and I was always Penny. And I'd play out episodes with my Barbie dolls, assigning different LIS characters to them.
I liked this episode only for the fact that they filmed it on actual outside sets. Seeing the chariot in an actual outdoor location! I hated the rest of it! Especially the Robot chanting with the natives, and putting on a magic show, (which the robot had no such powers, ever)!!! I agree with you that this would have been a good episode for Judy to be in! Nope, writers could not deal with this! ‘Was supposed to be touched and moved with Don and Smith making peace with each other in the face of impending death. But it never played out after this episode like it never even happened. Oh well, that was the level of deepness in an Irwin Allen production!
0:20. Who is Prudence? 0:49. I seem to recall a "Hyper Atomic Missile" in Forbidden World. 1:23. Penny is having a fantastic hair day. Like I said earlier, Angela is one of the most beautiful women who ever lived. 1:33. Someone was cooking tomato soup in the galley and spilled a little. 2:14. A refugee from one of those old 60's Kelloggs "Puffa Puffa Rice" cereal comercials. 8:38. The salesman from the Celestial Department Store who sold that stuff to the Time Tunnel and left some of that stuff behind on the "Flight Into The Future" planet also left some behind on this planet. 9:00. I think that the hold was that none of the writers or big shots could think of anything more creative than having Smith hog scenes and act silly. 9:16. If his character died during a Star Trek episode, why isn't he wearing a red shirt? 11:22. Pon Far, Einstein. 13:57. Are you sure this isn't "The Great Vegetable Rebellion"? 17:58. What is that grey thing in the background with the fact painted on it? This is the low point of the series. This scene also reminds me of something else. Schmeerskahoven!!!
Im counting the planets for year 3 this is the Hunters Moon planet but they take until The Haunted Lighthouse i am just trying to figure out how many planets where The Robinson's on for 3
He (Johnathan Harris) pulled almost the same garbage when he was a guest on the show "The Ghost And Mrs. Muir". These are the only two shows I've ever seen him on, but were ALL his characters like Dr. Smith? ruclips.net/p/PLVkaxlkde0nZOy-YykJoJjKr5gSfwMDru
In production order for that year, "Space Primevals" was the 3rd week, "The Apple" was 9th. So, in this case, it looks like STAR TREK was doing a variation on a LOST IN SPACE. I prefer "Primievals"! And Protinius is more interesting than Vaal.
"Hunter's Moon" and "Primevals" were filmed & broadcast back-to-back, almost certainly because btoh featured outdoor location filming. HOWEVER... It never made sense to me that ""Space Destructors" should be aired directly after "Primievals". But if you SWAP those two, what you have is, Smith (controlled by the android machine) goes too far, and John almost exiles him, but then decides to give him one more chance. This would then be followed immediately by Don ordering Smith to come with him, and, whatta ya know, Smith winds up saving Don't life! They're in such a hurry to leave the planet, so having "Primievals" go straight into "The Haunted Lighthouse" makes more sense than "Primievals" into "Destructors". John using the Space Pod instead of the Rocket Belt, however, DOESN'T make sense, but I'm willing to go with plot details over technical mistakes. (As you might tell, I'm trying to figure out a more logical viewing order, since both production AND broadcast orders have serious problems.)
@@dwashbur I GUESS NOT!!! By the way, I checked. "Space Primievals" was filmed 3rd that year, but over on STAR TREK, "The Apple" was filmed 9th. So, if they both started shooting the same week, "The Apple" was made 6 weeks later. Quite a few 3rd season LOST IN SPACE stories strike me as "LIS" versions of 1st-season STAR TREKs. In this case, the only story that fits would be "The Galileo Seven". Oddly enough, I like "Primevals" better than either of those others. Also, Protinius is a lot more intelligent & interesting that Vaal. Vaal was just keeping its people around to feed him, but Protinius was doing some kind of experiment in evolution with lower life forms. And at the end, he admitted he learned from the Earth people that those with great power should SERVE those they protect, not rule. Sounds like a pretty important lesson a lot of people need to learn.
As a person of Greek background I am offended that they hired a Greek American actor to play a 'primitive'! But I like the fact you provided a bit of background to Arthur Batanides. And I see you placed the accent on the second syllable. Was that your decision? Was that how the actor called himself? In Greek, the accent is on the third syllable. A bit of trivia there
I didn't know that. My knowledge only extends to ancient Greek. Back then the accent was recessive, which is to say it would move as far back from the last syllable as possible. Whenever it was okay under the way the language had developed, the accent went on the third syllable from the end. Looks like things have changed in 2000 years. Who knew?? Thanks for the info!
@@dwashbur you have one upped me with your knowledge of Ancient Greek! We will need to add the initial letter of your name to 'SHAZAM' alongside the immortals! LOL
You keep complaining that this show is formulaic. TV in the 60s... and 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s... WAS intentionally formulaic. The network suits were perfectly happy squeezing one gag til the audience fled, then canceling the show.

And once I heard in a Goddard’s interview that he and Mr. Harris got along very, very well through the entire 3 Seasons series.

The dancing inhabitants remund me of Star Trek Beyond's beginning.
The ending is the M-5 mea culpa from Star Trek's " The Ultimate Computer."
What's this? You mean after two years of "WHAAAAAAAOOOHHHHHH!!!!!", you're hoping for something different? Oh the pain...the pain...

Speaking with the caveman is like Bugs Bunny talking with the Tasmanian Devil.
The robot got turned into one of those old Remco toys for a second.

Seems like this episode is at least partially a ripoff of an episode of Gilligan's Island. "Operation Steam Heat" originally aired March 10 1966.
