How to burnish leather edges in less than 5 minutes? Some leathercraft secrets shared.

- I've been asked again how I burnish my edges. Well, it's not easy because I change it all the time.
But most recently, I've been trying to sand with less different grits of sanding paper. Instead, I tried sanding while the leather is wet. I did it by mistake once with Tokonole and the result was good.
So I decided to try those steps (works on veg-tanned and latigo leathers):
- sand with a 300/500 grit
- wet the leather and sand again
- when the leather feels smooths, stop
- sand with a 800/1000 grit
- wet the leather and sand again
- when the leather feels smooth, stop
- sand with a 1500 to 2000 grit
- wet the leather and sand again
- bevel your edges
At this stage the leather could already be a bit shiny.
- use pure @Tokonole or soft bees wax and burnish with a cotton fabric or denim.
- (even after Tokonole, I apply a small amount of bees wax to nourish the leather)
This should get you shiny and strong edges.
I usually do all that after a trimming if I can, and after I stitched for a cleaner result.
And you, what's your technique?
Happy crafting!
Geoffrey

Holy moly look at that shine
Ha ha 😁 thank you so much 🥰
What ratio of tokonole to water did you use while sanding? Love your work!
Thank you so much 🥰 I used 50/50. But I'm going slowly toward 60% water 40% Tokonole.
Is that what you fill the marker with? And where do you get those empty markers?@@LordLeatherCraft
@@mydearriley 👋. Yes it's Tokonole that you can find here tidd.ly/3XLq0l3 and the pen you can find on most craft shop or here Amazon: amzn.to/3qens2d
Or Etsy: tidd.ly/3oD1iq0
More info on my guides at lord.crofte.fr 💕
Wow, thank you for the information! And then you use the mix of the water:tokonole in the pen?@@LordLeatherCraft
@@mydearriley exactly 👌 you got it. 😊 My pleasure. Enjoy your craft
Do you bevel at all?
Excellent question! Usually before 900 grit or before even starting sanding 😊👌
You are a true Egdelord!
I love the surname 😁😂❤️
Always wondered how to get that mirror finish
Amazing thanks
My pleasure 🥰
Is chrome tan or veg tan?
@@furymanu this one is pueblo leather. It's a veg tan leather.
where did you get that applicator pen
@@LMFAO5001 you can find them here: amzn.to/3qens2d
I want that wallet so bad, I share the same hobby but most of my work is actual trash , only 10% of what I make I don’t throw away . This is beautiful , not only the color but the craftsmanship , let me know how much a wallet with this color combo costs
@@seansperber7443 aaaww thank you so much. Take your time trying and perfecting. For me, the trigger between "I make only shitty stuff" and "this is actually sellable", was to changing the quality of the leather, and slowing down all the steps at first, to perfect all the gestures. Then I get used to each technique and could do it with less mistakes (you'll still do some, but less critical).
This wallet is 125€ delivery included in Europe, +8€ for outside Europe. Thanks 🙏
Can we achieve smooth and long-lasting results if we only use water?
@@1arpa not really. The best would be to, at least, use bees wax to finish the edge.
So i make billfolds as well but how do u get the rounded part the same way? Is it better to do it b4 stitching it together?
I glue the parts together then I do the rounded corners, then the stitch line that will follow those corners 😊
@@LordLeatherCraft aaa ok so doing the rounded corners while they are still straight? 🤯 Thank you ill practice this today
@@theogo4575 Take a look at this one ruclips.net/user/shortspbA7hFu5Ius?si=F7FKATwlO1RY7cf5 you'll see near the end: I cut the corner in radius first, then I trace the stitch line, punch, and stitch.
As my stitch line follow the corner shape, I need my corner to be rounder-shaped before stitching it. If it makes sense 😊
Is this vegetable or chrome taned leather??
This is veg-tan leather. 😊
This process works for latigo leather too. And a friend of mine uses 4 other grit level for chrome tan leather and made it work, but the result is way less shiny. For chrome-tan leather I would go for paint 😁
Оч красиво и наглядно
Pueblo leather, right? ❤
Exactly 👍
@@LordLeatherCrafti love them and your work, tks for sharing 🙏
@@o_kia_anh_ban thank you. Really appreciated 😍🥰
What's tokonole? What's an alternative? I'm new and am up to my eyeballs in art supply fees because I have way too mnay hobbies
@@mixedmediaartgirl300 it's a water based gel to help the fiber bind. You can use water only or coconut oil mixed to bees wax as replacement. No worries, I totally get the too many hobbies part 😂
@@LordLeatherCraft thank you!! I have started with assemblage and collage art, as I have been poor most my life, and so that has made me frugal and also resourceful to get what I want or need. Artists like you who are willing to share information to get me through the learning stages until I can make the confident investment in better tools is why I have been able to learn so many skills, and I am grateful. Will follow immediately. I have been able to pursue resin art, lino cuts and prints, and other printing methods, metalsmithing and welding, different metalsmithing techniques and fine jewelry, stained glass, woodworking, needle felting, making clothes and shoes, even the art of cooking and so much more, because of fellow artists and creatives sharing their knowledge. THANK YOU. It was easier to ignore my comment, but you didn't, and my life has already improved because of that. I'm in the middle of making my first pair of moccasins!
@@mixedmediaartgirl300 wow that's an impressive list of skills. Congratulations 🎉 I totally understand you on the poor aspect and the fact it helps you become more resourceful. Been there, done that. Life is full of surprise, knowledge to acquire and that makes it enjoyable. Keep going and have fun!
What about using Edge Kote? 🤔. Because i dont have Tokonole
This is a video about finishing edges with a technique using Tokonole. I don't know Edge Kote, but most of the first steps are the same for veg-tan leather: you need a flat surface to be able to work properly with any kind of coating material. Edge coat usually requires one first layer, a bit of sanding, and at least a second generous second layer of coating.
@@LordLeatherCraft Thanks
whats a tokonole?
It's the brand of the burnishing product I use. You can find more info in the guides of tools I use here if you want: shop.crofte.fr/
How can i get all dis suff u use for burnishing
You can find most of them on that guide shop.crofte.fr/create-leather-belt-beginner-guide the only thing missing is the empty pump pen that you can find here amzn.to/3L3soxG
Wow looks great
Lovely
Thank you 🥰
leather used?
Sorry I didn't see your comment before now. I use Pueblo Leather from Badalassi Carlo tannery. You can find it there: buyleatheronline.com (use the coupon LORD7 for a small discount)
Цена такого изделия стоит ?
Hello, this one was 132€ delivery for the US included. It depends on the country of delivery. FYI I don't deliver in some countries.
What do you use to apply tokonole?
I use a paint pen with a small tank where I put 50/50 water dans Tokonole. Amazon: amzn.to/3qens2d
or Etsy: tidd.ly/3oD1iq0 have them.
@LordLeatherCraft that looked so useful! Fabulous job!!!
@@brennen7819thank you so much for your feedback 🥰
Can I use 100 grit for the first part
Yes of course. It really depends on the initial state of your edges. Sometimes I start with 1000 grit immediately because I used trim allowance or the edges are perfectly aligned.
ماده ای که میزنین چی هست
I use Pueblo Leather, and for the rest it's several grain of sanding paper and Tokonole for the white product I apply on the edges. You'll find some of the tools I use there: shop.crofte.fr in the Guides section.
Это он грунтом постоянно покрывал и потом шлифовал?
Yes the idea is to break the fiber with sanding paper, then burnish with Tokonole to link the fibers together. Using smaller and smaller grain helps get thinner defects on the edges, but also helps strengthen the edges.
А с хромкой подобное сможете показать?
Unfortunately this works less well with Chrome tanned leather. But I can share an example of a details process with Chrome tanned that I use dye on it. If you browse my other Shorts, you'll see me do that with less detailed steps.
What is the name of the tube you use ?
Where to buy ?
Hello, these are empty paint pen.

Hello. No, it works also on latigo leather. But the info is in the description of the video 😊
