      It's not as trippy as it sounds, 3blue1brown has a great video about it. Basically it just means that waves aren't instantaneous. In order to contain very specific frequencies, a signal needs to have a certain length. The resolution of the frequencies corresponds to the y resolution on the spectrogram, and the length of the samples corresponds to the x resolution. So the uncertainty principle says that higher y resolution comes at the cost of lower x resolution

    Years ago ( like nearly 20 ), me and a friend of mine were looking to find a way to copyright music with a similar technique. Objectively, the imprint was inaudible, but would be very easy to see when looked at with the method you show. Ultimately we never took it anywhere. Two reasons for that. One was that Sony had a similar technology for their Play Station systems and DVD's. Second reason is that we didn't believe CD's would last much longer, and that most audio would go to digital format anyway, meaning all the metadata would be a part of it. Cool way to make visual sound though!

    First off, this is exceptional and highly-appreciated content on a subject that's needed now, more than ever.
    Let me also say that I've been making and producing music (as a hobbyist) for over 2 decades at this point.
    I started out on FL Studio, and have used many other DAWs, before finally settling on mainly using Ableton.
    From a theoretical standpoint, I fully comprehend everything you've laid out in your thoughtful explanation.
    However, I have to imagine there's a less complicated way to attain the results you're showing here, right?
    The inputs are static: a 2-bit color watermark image of a specific height, and one audio file to watermark.
    How is it that the process would require downloading and installing and learning and using so many tools?
    I have so many things to focus on now, I shudder at the opportunity cost of setup and learning all of them.
    Do I _really_ need Harmor, a spectral compressor, spectral clipping, a stereo shaper, phase inversion, etc.?
    Ideally (especially with how many tracks I work on), I want to click like three things per project and be done.

    • @idiotinium
      @idiotinium  День назад +1

      harmor and AudioPaint are the only tools i know that can create a spectral image
      spectral compressor is the way i know of that can compress spectrally like that which is free
      the spectral gate from spectral clipping certainly helps threshold your image's signal (spectral clipper is free)
      its baffling to me too that spectral tools are so obscure even tho theyre incredibly simple

    That’s quite unexpected and fascinating. Great vid.
    I will have to think of a way to use that base idea in a less destructive way (the issue cited by many commenters about large sound systems being in mono is definitely something to consider).

    • @idiotinium
      @idiotinium  4 дня назад

      you can cut the image out of the side signal instead, such that people would have to flip one channel before collapsing to mono first

    • @goingmodular
      @goingmodular 4 дня назад

      @ oh, that’s a great idea. A sort of double-hiding mechanism.
      The thing I wonder however is how much that scrambling of phases blurs the spatial definition in the stereo mix. The exact opposite of my previous concern, so to speak ! 😁
      Sorry, people are always complaining and wanting the opposite of what they have ! 🥲
      This all raises a million of questions, like how it behaves if you apply the trick to only one instrument in the mix, or of other ways to embed hidden information in the phase. I can see this kind of processes be used in steganography, for instance (like is already the case in some image processing that remain invisible to the human eye).
      Fascinating subject.

    • @idiotinium
      @idiotinium  4 дня назад

      its not really scrambling any phases, its moreso just separating your signal into mid and size, and then you're just punching holes in the frequency spectrum. either making some regions entirely mono or entirely side (depending on what you're cutting out)
      if you only apply it to one instrument then that instrument will be the only track that contains the watermark, everything else will just go over it, like if you painted a shape on a wall and then painted more shapes over it

    • @goingmodular
      @goingmodular 4 дня назад

      @ I understand all this, I am just wondering how deep one may go before the hidden information get totally blurred. I guess this is important for instance in the applicability of the method for actual watermarking, as in “proof-of-ownership watermarking”. After all, most people using someone else’s sound files in their work will transform them or add overlaid material (like a sample in a mix). So I believe that the practical scenario in terms of actual “watermarking” is precisely that of the watermarked signal being drowned into a global mix, and what to do to preserve the marking without destorting the original signal beyond measure.
      Obviously the case for steganography would be totally different, because then the original “carrier” information will generally be passed on unchanged.
      I suppose that there must be an already ample literature on that subject. I will have to look into it.
      Thanks for drawing my attention to that topic !

    I do think this is really cool, but humans hear between 2k and 5k really well, so carving out space there should be very noticeable, actually. Wouldn't you want to do it in a way that you can't hear so much?
    Also I personally wouldn't want to ruin the integrity of the mono mix. Some people still listen to things in mono on phones and blutooth speakers, I wouldn't want people to assume it as a mixing decision of my art when it's not. Apjex twin did something similar, but he did it as an artistic choice. If higher samplerate audio was more common, i would prefer to just push the watermark above 20k.

    I don't use FL Studio and didn't really follow the details of the compression plugins. But couldn't I just
    - generate an audio track that has my image as its spectrum
    - split the music into mid/side
    - subtract the image track from the mid
    - recombine the mid/side tracks?

    • @idiotinium
      @idiotinium  5 дней назад

      thats another way to do it yeah
      i do
      subtract the image from the main signal
      mix that with the main signal with a polarity flip to get the part that was subtracted like a cookie cutter (i'll call it the cookie signal)
      i make the cookie signal mono and flip one channel
      then mix it back with the carved one
      then mix them

    Listening on my phone, I can hear the watermark in the first clip, probably because my phone is mono.. (and I'm familiar with the sound of spectral images)
    But it's still really cool tech! I'm curious to see how it sounds through headphones, since i know inverting the phase of an entire channel makes it sound like it's coming from inside your head
    Have you tried listening to this through speakers? I wonder if some weird cancellation patterns would occur (i have no experience with stereo speakers)

    • @idiotinium
      @idiotinium  5 дней назад

      with actual speakers its never gonna be perfectly aligned in phase so it you might head some semi-flanging effect instead, not too big of a thing but you'd definitely hear something

    I am not a musician or sound designer, but this stuff is still lit AF. Didn't understand much of what was explained, but it's gotta be the coolest thing to watermark your music inside the actual music, and I guess without a proper way of erasing that watermark from the music. So the cool idea about that is, no matter where this music ends up, it will always carry it's watermark. Nice.
    Although if the music itself gets altered, so will the watermark I believe. But in that case, the music quality would already audidly be downgraded. I could only think of one thing to maybe keep audio quality while messing with the watermark - just getting rid of one channel, I guess at least. Getting rid of one channel would mean, there is no way of cancelling one out. Erase one channel then render in mono, should be fine I guess. Still, mono is a mentionable downgrade from Stereo, so still quite the drop in music quality.
