    This is the reason I like Shimano: you have a lot of options and they are cross compatible. It's hard to get a bike with all the components as you would like them, once they wear out you might one to change a few things without throwing away everything. 10-51 is a great range for a 1x12 system. Personally I usually take SLX as my starting point and I can move up or down depending on what I need in that particular setup I'm working on.

      The more light weight the less durable. Xtr isn't going to last much more than a year. I used to ride lx drive chain with xt shifters it's a good compromise.. too many plastic parts inside the cheaper shifters.

      I just ordered a 2021 Grand Canyon 8, it comes with an interesting mixed bag of XT/SLX/Deore components: XT derailleur, SLX shifters and chain, and Deore cassette and crank. I sure would've loved the last two to be also SLX, but I'm pretty sure it's a decent groupset combo for the price of the bike. Besides, I can always upgrade at a later stage when it's time to replace them.

      Just recently got a Giant City bike with Altus, and have to say, it is far less capable and feels far "cheaper" in its action than the SLX I run on three other MTBs. Fince for a City cruiser, but not to handle off road action.

      @@vr4042 Have altus on my Vitus Nucleus hardtail. It shifts great but kinda slow, and after few hours of riding when the chain is gunked up the shifting gets really crappy, double shifts, not shifting at all, having to shift 2 times for 1 gear change etc. and the shifters are just rubbish. both shifters don't show what gear im in anymore and front derailleur shifter got completely destroyed from a small crash. Tbf its an entry groupset on a 650€ bike and I suspect it would work fine for a beginner. The lack of a clutch really sucks also, didn't realize how easy the chain comes of on rougher terrain. In hindsight I should have got the version with the 1x9 groupset and a clutch.

    I have been traditionally a "blue collar" XT guy. In Jan 2020, I bought a FELT SUTPLUS-30 and almost immediately upgraded the 1x10 Deore drivetrain to the 1x12 XT (11-50), as well upgrading the Deore 2-piston brakes to the m8120 4-piston XT brakes. I know that I feel the difference in both the shifting of the drivetrain (especially to lower gears going into a climb), as well as the shifter itself, and a huge difference in brakes.
    I have a 2015 INTENSE 27.5 with full XT. I upgraded to 1x11 XT with the 11-50 gearing and upgraded the brakes with ice-tech rotors and metalic pads.
    Having said that. If I bought a 2020 bike or were looking to upgrade a Deore groupset bike. After watching this video, I would seriously look into SLX.

  • @mrvwbug4423
    @mrvwbug4423 4 года назад +36

    SLX with XT shifter was the sweet spot in the lineup, Deore with XT shifter might take that title now. Just need more microspline hubs out there, or better yet, conversion kits for existing hubs. Cost is also a big advantage over SRAM. Full XT costs around the same as GX Eagle, even though it is comparable to XO1. SLX costs slightly less than NX Eagle but is comparable to GX eagle. The new Deore costs slightly less than SX eagle, but blows NX eagle out of the water.

    • @killough71010

      Nah slx groupset with the xt shifter is THEE sweet spot, hands down. You're saving half a pound in weight alone just going slx, amongst better performance and durability with th SLX drivetrain.

      XT shifter is a common upgrade on SLX, and likely will be with this new 12 speed Deore. Mostly for both the double upshift and just better feel/durability. Deore or SLX with XT shifter is a great combo.

    • @doncrescas
      @doncrescas 4 года назад +3

      I'll add that holding the Deore and slx derailleurs side by side the only notable difference is the alloy inner jockey cage on the slx. The all steel cage on the Deore feels sturdier for a slight weight penalty.

Wanted to go SLX rear mech but found no reason to do so. I’ve read its got externally adjustable clutch but that’s not true. Further a set of pulley wheels for XT is so cheap to get. Could be an future upgrade. I’m especially pleased with the shifter. Actuation force is so light compared to 11 spd. XT unit it replaced.

If I would have to choose a cheaper option it would be the SLX- or the DEORE- groupset. Because in my opinion there is not a really big gap between SLX/XT and XT/XTR. Depending on how much money you would be ready to spend I would choose either the high- end XTR or SLX or if a would set my mark onto duability the DEORE would be my choice.

    So to sum up the video: basically the difference between deore/slx/xt is weight + the xt shifter has 2-way up-shifts (shifts to smallet sprockets). So if you don’t care about few hundret grams, just get deore + xt shifter. What about the rear-mech upper chainwheel? On the older sets, xt (or xtr?) used to have bearings wich made it more precise on shifts.

    IF you're building yourself and not buying a complete bike off the shelf it's really a choice between XTR and XT. The price difference is vast but the performance and weight are minimal.
    I don't bash my bikes around so I stick to XTR (apart from once and never again trying Sram). Sentimentally I get attached to my bikes so I hardly ever sell them. I'm a firm believer in the N+1 rule. Besides there's little point in selling as bikes usually plummet in value. Having a collection of bikes is great especially when mates from interstate or abroad visit.

      Okay and why should one get XTR for something other than what you describe as sentimental value? I want to point out, lighter generally makes LESS durable. The chain rings will eat into the free hub and become impossible to replace. They also wear faster. XTR is made for racing and they basically swap cassettes and chains every race. The setup lacks durability for those that like to hammer on their bike especially if you like climbing.

    Every review I've seen on new Deore misses two real points, because they focus only on the 12 speed and imply that it's only for bikes that have 142+ rear axle. The biggest great thing comes in two places I think: The first being that they now offer a rear microspline hub that fits 135mmQR dropouts, ie, all beginner frames, and the 11 speed 11-51 cassette fits on a normal HG spline hub - which means it can go on pretty much any bike, without having to get a new hub or wheelset.
    So replace a hub on a super cheap entry level bike and you can get 10-51 12 speed at reasonable price.
    Upgrade just the cassette to the 11 speed 11-51 and that's a huge range increase from most entry level bikes that may have say, 11-36.
    So really, it's two things - reasonable price, and compatibility to upgrade for literally anyone.
    I also really like the i-spec EV shifter that includes the gear readout. I know most people don't care about it but I like to be able to see and confirm which gear I'm in, and the I-spec cleaning up the cockpit (presuming compatible brakes) is awesome.

    I run di2 Ultegra on my road bikes and am a bit of a groupset snob really. Then I bought an MTB to do some XC races for some cross training and a bit of fun. I was only looking for a mid-level bike so settled for Deore with some apprehension - but holy shit, this bad boy is bomb-proof. It doesn’t matter what you throw at it, it just goes and goes and goes with only the minimum of maintenance and I often outlast my opponents on better bikes that suffer mechanical issues. Sometimes simple-done-well is the answer.

    After messing about with my bike set up, buying a older frame, I brought everything deore. Was an 8 speed cassette. I purchased an xt m760 cassette, 11/34. But had an issue, it was moving around on the cartridge, I then brought an hg400 cassette, pretty cheap. But was only about 90g heavier, but had the exact ratios. Sticking with a 2 chain ring set up, a 28t & 36t. I have a pretty gd range for light xc, or trails. Works well. My choice was not just looks, it was price also.

      I agree 100%. Although I would say the same about XT. When you have the money for an XT fitted bike you just dont want to bother with lower tier group-sets. I just upgraded my "old" XT mechs with new XTR. The one place where I draw the line are with the cassette. XTR cassette are priced as if it was made of pure gold and its a wear-component that you want to swop out again and again times during the lifespan of your bike.

      @@cookingconfessions Agree! XT is great stuff. Having just bought a 2021 Santa Cruz Tallboy I chose the SRAM X01 build over the lower priced XT-equipped bike. One thing that surprised me was the HUGE weight difference between the brakes...like the XT's were almost twice as heavy for their 4-piston brakes vs the X01's. That's crazy. But all good stuff! We're lucky :)

    I like to buy parts, which I do not need to worry about. My bikes are around 800-1300 eur price range and I can ride them where I want and lock them and leave them there without worrying too much that they would be stolen/damaged (that is related to my area [Finland] of course also). To me the 1000 EUR/bike is around the sweet spot where bikes are good enough for me without too much worry for them. Therefore Deore, Tiagra and perhaps 105 are the groupsets that have the best draw for me.

    I haven't spent the big bucks on a bike, so I'm a Deore guy. Biggest complaint is that the rear gearset needs adjustment more often, I either loose 10th or 1st gear every now and then. I'm also still rocking 2x10, and had a horrendous FSA crankset from stock. And that was by far the worst component on the whole bike. Changed it for a Deore FC-M6000-2 this year (Couldn't bring myself to spend 3 times the money for a 1x11/1x12 on that bike) and I've now stopped complaining about 2x gearsets, it's really good!

  • @MacPhantom

    I'd recommend Deore or SLX everything, but with an XT shifter and (important) an XT bottom bracket for typical mountain bikers.
    The XT shifter brings the double shift-down, which the lower tiers don't have, and the bottom bracket is a few quid more but more durable. I managed to crack my SLX bottom bracket within a few months of riding.
    Okay, if weight saving is a big thing, go for XTR cranks and cassette. Everything else is nice to have, but progressively expensive.
