Stefan Grossman is,and always will be, a national treasure . His dedication to the American art form of blues, and education of it is a legacy of huge proportions . He learnt from the masters, and passed it on, beautifully. God bless you 'mate, and those that came before. Also, Thankyou for your time, and effort.

Yes..... I learned finger picking in the 80's with his methods. Oh, though. It had been on video's then, I would have learned way faster and certainly better
      Thank you Stephan

This guy is the reason I play guitar. I owe him everything. He gave me kicking mule records. It started thousands in fingerpicking.

Totally agree, I only watched this video ONCE and I learned as if I was watching ANY other teacher's video 10 times! As ALWAYS, a good teacher is better than a good guitar player when teaching, and we get BOTH here!
    I agree, incomparable!

Hey Stefan, you’ve been one of my orinciple guitar teachers for almost fgifty years since I bought some of hour albums, along with those of Duck BakerJohn Renbourn, Beet Jansch, John James and others. These were a revelation. I was going to school a Thomas Jeff in Philly and heard Duck playing in an Alumni Hall. That got me to exploring the downtown record shops. Anyway, Kicking Mule and Vestapol helped me out a great deal. I would classify myself as an intermediate guitar student at that time at best. I never had as much time to pursue learning your materials in these intervening years as I would have liked. . I learned songs and got freer in improv, but I want to dedicate more time to learning it now that I have time. After watching a few videos of you playing and teaching tonight I thought that I should tell you I’m ready to buckle down and really apply myself now that I’m almost 70, disabled and in pain! I am being facetious , but I really do want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me out (and possibly millions of others) and providing great music to listen to on the way! I hope you’ll have many more years to share with us and I hope you’re in good health! Take care!

Mel Bay: "Red River Valley". Nothing against Mel Bay, but I started off on those books too and it dried up my enthusiasm for learning guitar. Thank God for RUclips - I'm learning again for the second time.

Stephen... yr the very best "go to" archivist (if that's a word?) player and repository of all the music I like... you've got a CV like very few and a very nice personality to go with it... a life well spent my friend ... (being well spent?)

Wow thank you Stefan - I am not a player - but my dad is Buzzy Linhart and he used his thumb on the E string like that too. My youngest son is into bass and guitar, I'll have him watch this. He''ll get it - he's looking to get this thumb and pinky more involved.

Buzzy’s heyday was in the 70s. Used to see him at venues in NYc and Long Island. It was no tornado at all! And of course his “You Gotta Have Friends” must have bought a few pairs of shoes.

Hi Stefan . I was just listening to the LP you made in the 60's and wondering what model guitar you played then and also what is the model you are playing now? I have been playing dreadnaughts for about 50 years and think it is time to branch out. Keith from New Zealand.

I like the sound of Mr. Stefan Grossman's fingerpicking of songs and especially the way he fingerpicks slow blues in E. Also, I like the way he splits the screen to show how he fingerpicks the strings and plays the notes with his left hand. Unfortunately, every time that I watch his fingerpicking exercise videos, he refers to pinching some of the notes, but he doesn't explain which notes are to be pinched. He also doesn’t explain and shows the fingerpicking patterns that he uses, and that one can practice. I learned to fingerpick songs using the classical style where the thumb of the right-hand picks the three thickest strings and the rest of the fingers pick the thinnest strings for melody. I have to retrain my brain to use Mr. Grossman’s style of using the thumb to pick all the strings, except the high E, with the thumb as he does in this song. Other than this Mr. Grossman is one of my favorite blues guitar teachers.

You might be better off paying for some of the lessons so you have the tablature to go along with it. Having the tablature to refer to makes a huge difference for me in terms of the time it takes me to learn a tune. Good luck!!

Interesting for me is that this is in the key of G and resolves to the single string G note picked on the high e string third fret.
