Escaping the Death House (Curse of Strahd DM Guide)

  • This video discusses the players characters escaping the death house in the curse of strahd adventure for dungeons & dragons 5e. Dungeon master guide and advice with overview of: the cult is denied, the cult is appeased, death house triggers, death house transformation features, and modifying the cult is denied. These dungeon master tips are simple and easy to apply to your game. All the advice and suggestions offered are based on personal dungeon master experience, research and other dungeon master recommendations. Many aspects of the curse of strahd fall outside the boundary of the original ravenloft adventure, and the death house is new game design. Please be aware this is just suggestions and recommendations that you can ignore or use at your discretion.     I made a few adjustments to my death house run throughs and my players still often talk about it as being one of the highlights of our campaign.
    1 - animated armor - reduce hp and ac for parties below 4 players
    2 - remove the broom
    3 - make the nursemaid friendly, have her switch between lost/angry and hint at if she could only have something to remind her of life so she could remember. Players bring her bones to her and her memory restored, she will reveal the house to the party, as well as help during the death house escape, negating some fail rolls.
    4 - add potions of healing, some spell scrolls (I put remove curse and purify food and drink for later in the campaign- doru and wizards of wine) and info on the items Strahd fears (tome, symbol of ravenkind, sun sword) in the secret chamber in the library
    5 - have Gustav commit suicide via hanging and be in the master bed - takes 1 ghast away from downstairs and make a small journal of his nearby and suicide note in hand
    6 - ghouls in basement only in packs of 2 or change a pack to 4 zombies
    7 - shades mirror the number of players
    8 - grick only attacks if players come within 5 feet, leaves once the players leave
    9 - remove centipede
    10 - drastically alter shambling mound - made into flesh mound, with a caviat - engulfed player can roll a perception check - pass means they see a baby (baby Walter) in the mass. Successful grapple check or 2 damage will destroy the mound.
    Gustav will appear once Walter is destroyed this way and take the bones away with him to rest in the crypts - will also come back to help during the escape
    11 - if rose and thorn are laid to rest, they can help the escape too
    This being said, don’t pull punches or fudge rolls. These adjustments make the death house manageable to run and enjoyable.

    In the Strahd statue room you can go up the secret stairs to the wolf den and only have to face the smoke and one rat swarm before you get out....that the shortest escape.

    We had two paladins so we navigated the dagger doors by one high AC paladin going through first and waiting on the other side. When a low hp player passed through and fell unconscious the paladin gave 1 hp to get them back in the feet and to the next door.

    That said, the primary lesson of Strahd is caution, team work, ingenuity, and a warning that your precious little PCs will die frequently and horribly in this campaign.

    isn't the actual shortest route out of the house from the Dungeon up the Staircase in the Statue Shrine straight into the Wolf Den, from where breaking a single wall already gets them to the exit? So one Smoke Room and one Rat Swarm and you're out? IF they know about the Trapdoor of course.

    So what complications should I look out for if I start my party at lvl 3? Seems dangerous enough as it is but would I need to scale anything?

      Yes, scale it on the fly, because level 3 characters can wildly vary.

    I've had the mound defeated a couple of times, but usually the party is level 3,
    The last time i ran DH, I removed the mound and the party were confronted by the cults demand of one having to die. Made for interesting table discussions as well as everyone looking at the abilities they have etc. I'd removed most of the dungeon crawl element of the basement too. Took a couple of sessions as the party had serious discussions about who it could be, what could they do afterwards to help get the PC back, was there anything else they could think to substitute than a PC.
    In the past I've seen creative uses of beat companions, rats etc all being killed to the cults delight.
    I've yet to tpk in there, but I think on next running if it was a TPK it'd be a great lead in to them all waking up at Strahds dinner table.. "Well, I was going to send you an invite, but it seemed you needed a bit of a rest first." Could also be a good way to inflict vampirism on someone too depending if you want an agent on the inside of the party or not. (Or how Strahd is being played too)
    The one thing every CoS game I've ever run has in common is players burning the house down.. I'm always amused by that. :)

      No resting inside the house, it will not let them. I had monsters search out the characters if they tried to rest or the house did something to disrupt the rest.
