*I would imagine that popping a non-enhanced PS5 game version into the PS5 PRO will still give you lots of advantages. You will be able to stay closer to 60 fps at 4K natively, more often before needing to rely on FSR. Using FSR (on quality), you should stay at 60 fps at all times.*

Zen 2 CPUs are pretty hot, especially at higher clocks. And consoles use powerful APUs, which are much more power hungry than a mere CPU. Imagine how hot 3700x could be if it had built-in powerful iGPU. It would become a decent heater by itself. But with lower CPU clocks power consumption significantly reduces, thus it is much easier to dissipate it's heat.

Stuff like this is what makes the PC GPU space alot more flexable on the Nvidia side with path tracing etc even on a older mid-gen GPU. Ray tracing should not be a priority on current consoles. They're too cheap to have the hardware to do it while maintaining 60fps and 4K (or whatever high-ish resolution they're insisting on using.) Maybe in a gen or two that will be possible, but not yet. Also, 8K is pointless and should not be a priority for current consoles either. Just attempt to hit 60fps at native 4K, guys. Walk before you run. A 2024 new release like Dragon's Dogma 2 only running at 30fps is embarrassing.

DF said that PS5 pro can not do path trays

    • @CoolaDiamond
      @CoolaDiamond 5 месяцев назад +11

They are wrong. Path tracing can be done in any hardware. Use software too if you want. Use weak old hardware too if you want.
Path tracing is only impossible to be implemented if the amount of path tracing is more than the hardware capability to render enough fps for an enjoyable gameplay.
More path tracing means higher accuracy of lighting. Think it is like resolution. Higher resolution means more detail.
Of course the DF guys KNOW perfectly about this, it just that they might be thinking about the PS5 Pro going against the best RTX GPU that still can't do path tracing (at higher amount). In this case, they are ABSOLUTELY correct.
Also, the PS5 Pro probably have a new way to make path tracing cheaper to render. So much technique can be used to show mercy to the hardware by tricking our eyes.

As I understand it, path tracing is simply ray tracing with more bounces and is used for general illumination while ray tracing is more often associated with shadows and reflections. Since RDNA 2 fully support DX12 on PC, and DX12 supports path tracing, and the PS5 uses RDNA 2 (albeit not DX12), I assume it supports full ray tracing. But the performance is so poor it's not practical in most games. Will the reported 2-4 times improvement in ray tracing on the PS5 Pro be enough to make path tracing feasible? DF seemed dismissive of the whole idea.

We were promised much with the PS5 and Xbox Series X, but they’ve been quite disappointing at times. Ps5 is totally capable of making great looking games at 60fps. The problem is developers are implementing graphical shit no one notices at the expense of image quality and performance. Id rather have a last gen game with better image quality and 60fps then certain shadows being a certain way you have to look at to be like- o wow, that is more realistic. Get the image quality and performance right first- then focus on the other stuff.

Well, they really are only leaning it seems on the 45% uplift for the GPU in regular rasterization, so I'm assuming that is why PSSR is relevant in the Pro. It is kind of confusing to me, especially if the PS5 Pro has 50% more ROPS and TMUs. One can surmise that the clock speed of the PS5 Pro is reduced.

That is all fine and good, it has been this way since at least 6th gen console hardware. However this doesn't change the fact that these CPUs, while certainly a large upgrade over last generation console CPUs, are pretty much less performant Ryzen 3600 CPUs. They have less cache, only 1/3 if memory serves correctly, and only 7 cores dedicated for gaming not to mention the considerably slower clock speeds.
Yes consoles are specialized closed box hardware with a known spec, which should allow devs to target their designs and get the most out of them. Yet we can clearly see that even modest PC hardware has a considerably performance increase over these consoles.
Just pair say a Ryzen 3700x and 6700XT together on PC and watch the difference in performance, especially when it comes to CPU demanding titles. 🤷‍♂

Crysis 2007 had trees that you could shoot down and whole buildings that could collapse because you threw a grenade in it.

With the modest CPU enhancement, and RT focus, don't expect to see many 30 to 60 fps enhancements. Resolution and RT will take priority, and the CPU will hold back 60 fps from being possible at all. Some people won't care, but others should adjust their expectations.

Exactly. If the 300 TOPs is there to primarily compute PSSR, then the very modest CPU upgrade will most likely keep any games with RT at 30fps. From what I understand RT is still rather CPU intensive and these aging, but still effective, Zen 2 CPUs are not the best and computing the parts of the RT pipeline that still lean heavily on the CPU.

“Only 45% faster in rasterization”. That’s the biggest difference we’ve ever seen what more could you want? It’s like going from a 6900XT to a 7900XTX, do you think before you speak?
Keep in mind it’s going to be much faster than a 7700XT, it has 10% more CUs, 33.3% more bandwidth(perhaps even more), and a very fast AI Accelerator along with a machine-learning based architecture that rivals nVIDIA. So it’s like going from a RX 6700 to a 7800 XT potentially.

Case in point, find me any CPU and GPU combo from the base PlayStation 4 era in a PC with a game even in the same league graphically as The Last of Us 2, Horizon: FW, Modern Warfare or GT7.
No such game exists. In fact, I would argue that there is at least a generational leap in terms of visual Fidelity and complexity between those games and PC games set up with that old GPU and slow Jaguar CPU from 11 or 12 years ago.
There is so much more to consider than just numbers on paper. That is only relevant when there is such a wide array of hardware targets and they're just aiming for somewhere in the middle . a person today with something older like a GTX 1060 will never know what their GPU is actually capable of, because no one is ever going to take the time to Target it specifically and squeeze everything they can out of it. it's one of the reasons I love console gaming , and I hope it doesn't get homogenized into PC gaming because then it's just another rat race for an ever increasing number of cu's, hardware accelerated features and clock speed while never even actually fully optimizing for the last one.

I’m not convinced of that. Horizon: Zero Dawn ended up looking quite a bit better than I could have expected based on the early PS4 Pro spec sheet. I want to see how PSSR performs, too. We have no footage of what that looks like yet, just vague descriptions and speculation.
The PS5 is starting from a far more balanced system than the PS4, too. The PS5 with a Ryzen CPU has far more room to scale up than the PS4 with the Jaguar CPU, which wasn’t even considered good in 2013. Badly optimized CPU hungry games like Dragon’s Dogma 2 doesn’t mean Insomniac or Guerrilla Games can’t squeeze quite a bit more out of the Pro in a properly optimized game.
