This is so relatable. You don’t come across like you are moaning, you are just speaking the reality of a lot of peoples struggles. Me and my husband put our wages together (he earns double what I earn) we then take away all the bills and split what’s left. He earns more, I do more around the house (team work). I work in childcare so I luckily get 25% discount of my fees, the childcare costs are ridiculous. Thankyou for being so honest. It makes me feel normal. I hope George gets better soon. We also have a chicken pox outbreak at my nursery. Love your videos btw Xx

Before having Jasper I was a nursery manager and earn enough to have a comfortable life. I got pregnant and 2020 happened. I don’t drive so I would have had to get the tube with a pram to go back to my job so I left and found a job in my doorstep but stepped way down and only work 3 days a week. My little boy goes to the nursery I work at 3 days and I get 50% discount (which is very rare). However if my little one is ill and I take the day off with him not only am I paying his fee still, I actually loose a days wage. Im going on mat leave in June with baby 2 and I’ve dropped his days down to two mornings because I only get SMP. I really doubt I will be going back after baby 2 because I honestly would have to work 5 double shifts (7-6:30) just to afford them both to go.
However I must stress to everyone who reads this please don’t take it out on the staff. We honestly don’t see any money of your fees. A lot of the girls I work with are on minimum wage. We get so much hate by parents when we call them, I’ve actually had parents swear and shout at me when I’m just following company policies. Honestly anyone who works in childcare e ever gets into it for money because we actually earn pennies and live pay to pay.
I hope you get it sorted x

Thank you for saying this I’m
A childminder and earn way less than minimum wage per child per hour and with government funding the “free” hours it’s even less, I always feel awful sending any child home sick but we have policies we have to follow. Luckily all my childrens parents are brilliant. I understand the costs are crazy high to send your child to childcare but we don’t get paid a fortune, far from it xx

My daughter worked in childcare for a couple of years and got her qualifications for it which up her wages by a small amount, I just got a new job working in an office and I showed my daughter my contract with my pay and she couldn't believe it, she said mum that's more than what I was earning when I was at the nursery, she had her first baby and tried to go back to work and found it very difficult with what she earned and having to pay for my Granddaughter to go there, it really is shocking the cost of childcare to what the carers get paid to do what is an incredible job being responsible for other people children.

We couldn’t find any nursery’s near to us that offered a second child discount either. 😕 not the end of the world, big change not working but at least more time with the babies. Looking at the positives🙌🏼 xx

Both me and my OH have decent jobs but with increases in bills and childcare there’s no surprise there’s so many of us struggling! Hoping things get a bit easier for you guys 💛 x

It’s wild how little childcare is subsidised in the UK here in Australia it’s a sliding scale based on household income from 85% subsidy to 0%. My sister has a big household income of nearly 200k AU and they would still have 50% covered!

Loved this!! I really wanted to go back to work full time after I had maxi, just to feel like I was helping to support/contribute and to have a bit of a break also and my own money! But we worked out I would’ve just been working to pay for childcare almost to the penny (my wage wasn’t great being a secretary), so I still would have relied on my partner for ‘spending money’ and wouldn’t have actually been contributing to any of our bills etc so it was totally pointless, I just now look at it as I’m saving us £1200 a month! But we were forced into this situation because it’s what made the most sense financially, obviously I absolutely love being able to be at home with maxi everyday and seeing him, but having to wait until a child is 3 until you are able to have some options with going back to work again is just insane. Xxx

    • @HomeWithShan
      @HomeWithShan  2 года назад +3

Honestly, this is the situation for SOOOO many mums! Like you say, you treasure the time with Maxi, but it’s a situation that’s been forced due to finances - it’s not right! I’ve been thinking a lot about whether working is the right thing for us or not as a family… still haven’t made a decision hahaha! ♥️✨

    • @robynoakes590

@@HomeWithShan I don’t blame you lovely! I used to feel awful about not working, it felt like I wasn’t ‘contributing’ but that’s a load of rubbish, looking after our babies 24/7 we are defiantly doing our bit, it’s just in a different way, I’ve realised that now & I think you never get these years back with them, as hard as some days can be 😅 it’s also amazing and I’ve come to love it and can’t imagine life another way now, but it did take time because it wasn’t my ‘choice’ as such, it was just the only option that made sense on paper. You just do what you feel in your gut is best for you & your family, whatever choice you make will be the right one, you’ll figure it out ❤️❤️

    • @daisybashton

It is so tough, but why are childcare fees so often compared against just the mothers wages when it's a shared cost and in my opinion should come from both pay packets? Women should have the choice, and work for many women is not just about money, but career (maintenance and progression), pension (a big one, especially if you are not married!), work benefits (sick pay, maternity pay, accrued paid annual leave with continuity of service depending on your employer), not to mention identity and mental health. Women should be able to choose whether they work full-time, part-time or are stay at home mum depending on their wishes and parenting choices, and this should be a joint decision. Afterall paying for childcare allows BOTH parents to work, it is not solely the mothers responsibility to do it or pay for it, there is a Dad too who benefits from the child being cared for. So for example why are you paying half towards all costs when you work 4 days a week reducing childcare costs and allowing your partner to work (away from home too!). Also if one partner earns more than the other you can contribute by ratio rather than 50:50 to make it fair. Otherwise the women inevitably loses out financially as she can't afford to save, has less pension (which is particularly pertinent if you split, which sadly a high number of marriages/relationships do) and these are just the financial sacrafices, not to mention all of those that come with becoming a mother!! I think our society still has a long way to go to achieve equity for women!

When talking about the childcare bills you said about the 'business as a whole making more than it needs to'. Just thought you might like to know its actually the government funded hours that causes the charges to be so high.
The "free" hours (don't even get me started on them not being actually free), aren't subsidised by the government enough. So the nursery don't get enough funding to cover those hours, so they have to raise the money by charging higher hourly rates to those who do pay. (Also little things like if your child is ill when they get funded hours, the nursery cant claim free hours for that day as your child wasn't there, so that's more costs the nursery have to recoop)
This makes my blood boil. Especially now the government's answer is increase ratios- make it less safe for the children and the costs savings won't be passed onto parents.
The government should subsidise child care properly if they want parents to work.
Highly recommend following 'pregnant then screwed' on Instagram.

Childcare cost is insane! In Cambridge, it cost me nearly 500 pounds for a 2 days childminder care. 80 percent of my salary has already gone there. Even with my husband working full time and he has a decent job yet it's still very very tight, with the renting that is also insanely expensive in Cambridge.... It's tough to even save enough to get a house (house price is also insanely expensive here) and get away from paying other people's mortgage...

Hi - I noticed you and your partner split the bills evenly - does he earn the same amount as you? If he earns more could you consider splitting the bills as a percentage of your salary rather than 50/50? Especially as you don’t work 5 days a week (which saves money on childcare).

My 1 year old has been SO sick the past 3 months and it does make you wonder if you'd be better off not working. By the time I pay for daycare and travel, there's not much left out of my pay check. Hey beaut, I feel you. I work 2 days at the hospital which I’m so lucky my mum has him one and my dad has him the other. However, Jesse’s speech is delayed so the health visitor advices to get him into a nursery a couple of mornings a week (6hours). I’ve taken on a Saturday beauty job to cover the extra cost otherwise we couldn’t do it.
Also I know the struggle with the rollercoaster ride of the emotions of a toddler. I can’t believe you had your coffee on the table. That would have lead to a melt down in our house, he would want it/spill it etc. x

When my daughter was with a childminder and not at school, we were living down to our last £10 before payday, and we weren't spenders, we both work 5 days a week. We live in Guernsey too which is an expensive place to live. Now my daughter is in school, things are a lot easier, but even then, the cost of everything is going up, so we can't save as much as we would like to. I dont know how we would manage with a second child if we had one, which is sad that we have to think 'can we actually afford a second child'. Frustrating when your doing everything you can, and still being no better off.

I totally get you with childcare costs. Our mortgage is £697... our childcare costs for just THREE days a week, is £708. There is something seriously wrong when childcare costs more than a mortgage, especially when it's not even full time nursery. We had hoped to have a 2nd child at some point in the future, but it really doesn't look possible now with the cost of living. It unfuriates me how our government can waste so much money on ridiculous notions and give themselves pay rises, when those of us who work our asses off day-in-day out get shafted. I'm grateful my Mum can do 2 days a week with our son so I can work full time, but it shouldn't have to be the case.

I had to drop from full time work to 2 days a week after I had my boy. It’s insane how expensive child care is in England. In Sweden full time from 8am to 6 pm 5 days a week is £200 a month that’s if your income is good. And you get discounts if you have more then one child in the nursery. All meals and nappies included.

Not sure if it something you would consider but we pay £40 a day for a childminder, it saves us a lot of money and my little boy loves it so much. He’s got all his little friends and they send me pictures and videos everyday. I’m going to send him to nursery at 3 when you start getting free hours. It saves about £400 a month which we just couldn’t justify on a nursery. Especially at only 18 months old, he also doesn’t seem to get sick as much as there aren’t as many germs getting spread around. Sending lots of love everything is so tight at the minute financially.

Love catching up on your videos, so relatable, feels like having a coffee with a mate 😅👍! Had to laugh at the discarding of the cucumber my 14 month old does the same thing he discards stuff off his tray with such disdain. The dreaded pox is rife in my area too, like you say may as well get the stuff ready as its not a case of if, but when he gets it!
Oat baths are great they recommend them for eczema too! I used to make a little oaty facemask. Cheap, homemade & natural & makes your skin feel lovely x

Thanks for such a real and relatable vlog. I agree with the comments below though, I don't split the household bills with my husband 50/50. He earns more than me because he has a higher paying job and works fulltime whereas mine pays a bit less and I work 4 days a week to look after the kids on a Friday. We split bills in accordance with the percentage we earn. He earns 60% of the household income and I earn 40% so he pays 60% of bills and I pay 40%. We both feel that's fair.

This is so relateable - I work 3 days a week and my husband is full time. Both of us have fairly 'decent' wages yet every month we seem to have less and less left over. No holidays, very rarely eat out, live within our means so I cannot imagine how hard other people are finding it! Also 34 weeks pregnant with number 2 so little concerned as to how we might cope with mat pay.....already know I'm going to have to go back to work earlier this time 😪

    • @saslo5691
      @saslo5691 2 года назад

@@britasmith8008 this is not quite correct. You get paid £2 for every £8 you pay in but it only goes up to £500 per quarter. So in total you could get £2000 per year towards childcare. So depending on were you live and how expensive the childcare is it will, for most people, be less then 20% that the government pays.

Definitely should be more support out there for parents who don't earn millions (or thousands) a month to help with costs of childcare.
I get universal credit as on a low wage but even their childcare element you have to find the money to pay the fees. And now I'm in a cycle of where my fees are more than what I earn but I can't quit to be a sahm cos then universal credit penalise me cos I left.
Not hating on those that get the 2 yr free funding but why do the government reward people for not working rather than helping people out who do work and work full time to make ends meet and basically just survive life

@@TheMiglutea definitely. The government say it's to socialise the child and help them develop but they could easily go to parent groups that us working parents can't go to. The reason why it’s so expensive is because the government funded hours for 3 & 4 year olds is only about £3 an hour. So the nursery has to pay the rest of the hourly rate to cover staff rates, food, wipes ect… and the other children who are not in funded hours have to burden the cost. Not anti government or funded hours but I don’t see why they wouldn’t fund the full hour that the nursery charge per hour. It’s definitely frustrating

@@daisybashton take the horror stories with a pinch of salt! I’m a deputy manager at a nursery and have worked in lots of nurseries and never seen anything from the previous comment. Nursery practitioners love the children as if they are their own, we take all the paperwork home unpaid so we can’t spend more time with the children. We plan all the activities at home unpaid and bring in our own resources. The practitioners aren’t there for the wages in the slightest and they truly do their best that they can for the children (in my experience) xxx

Hey, how comes all children have chickenpox recently. There was an outbreak in child’s school recently. Both kids got it. But I’m seeing so many kids in UK have chickenpox very weird

Do you use tax free childcare? Everyone who works is entitled to it, there are no minimum/maximum income amounts! Literally every couple is entitled to it!! Some of my friends didn’t even know about it. You have an acc with the government and they give you some money towards childcare! I hope you know about it xx

It's just so not right that you and many others have to have second jobs side hustles just to have any quality of life and still struggling, and so many eveb worse off, while the few have an excess of wealth. Capitalism needs to end. Good video very helpful to see the budget spreadsheet 🙌

Get your child care cost for the month. Divide it by 100 and times by 20 that's what the Gov will top up. But if they are full time check the maximum amount you can get for 3 months
