To clarify: USSR had an influence on Polish politics, but Poland was never a Soviet republic. Poles are not cold, they are very nice and hospitable. However, they do not smile artificially and when asked: how are they, they will answer honestly how they are doing. If it's bad, they'll tell you about it. Apart from that, I agree with your opinions and thank you for your kind words. Cześć!
I really appreciate the content information that both Wes and Zhangster provides about Poland and the whole of Eastern Europe. I hope you guys can release more content with the thoughts about Western Europe. Also the types of job opportunities/discrimination in Europe for an Asian American.
I lived in Krakow for like 4 years my apartment was in Mały Rynek. Also learned to speak Polish. My first time in Poland was back in 2004! My kids are half Polish. Now live back in the Netherlands as we had to choose where to raise the kids Poland or Netherlands..
Currently in Belgrade Serbia and heading to Budapest next. Should arrive to Krakow in about 2 weeks from now. This video was released at the perfect time for me.
Mazury is one of the best nature spots in Poland to visit, especially in the summer. Beautiful views, with the biggest lakes in the country. Pomorze (where I live, exactly central Pomorze, near Koszalin/Kołobrzeg/Słupsk) is an underrated region when it comes to enjoying nature. Obviously, it's not Mazury, but we don't complain about the lack of nice, relaxing forested areas and spots like the mentioned lakes or rivers. And Środkowe Pomorze, outside of places like Mielno and Kołobrzeg in the summer, is one of the least crowded tourist regions in Poland. Polish National Parks are all pretty much unique nature viewing experiences as well. Most people talk about Tatry and Zakopane, but pretty much the whole Polish mountain range in South is fantastic to enjoy, and they tend to be less crowded than Zakopane, if you look for true peace and quiet. Polish sea beach views are incredible as well. Riversides (Bug, Wisła, Warta, etc.) are mostly famous for being fantastic fishing sides. Honestly, I do recommend doing a proper Polish tour around the country. Most people talk all the time about Warszawa/Kraków/Gdańsk/Zakopane, with sometimes Poznań, Toruń and Wrocław showing up in recommendations, while I think Poland has lots of other options to offer. Also Car Etiquette - it's pretty much enforced by law. In the past, Poland had SERIOUS car accident issues (with very high mortality rates), so the Polish government decided to grant pedestrians complete protection when they walk through the road, while the drivers must stop to let them walk first through the zebras crossing, no matter the circumstances.

During the winter months in Poland you just need to work a bit harder to get this dopamine hit, but I wouldn't call it one of the most miserable places in the world. It all depends on your mindset and on how you adjust, but you can still do most of things - inlcuding jogging, meeting friends, going out, exploring the countryside - just put this extra layer on and enjoy a hot cup of tea. It is also a time to slow down and have some cosy time at home. Perhaps vit.D supplementation can help with SAD symptoms and lack of sunshine. I understand it can be frustraining for some. And if you really struggle just jump on a plance and go to Canaries! Thanks for the great video!
I live in Poznań, which is also very walkable (and mostly green), and I tend to do around 9-12k steps a day. So yeah, the walking is real :). If walking doesn't cut it, we have bikes and public transport. We do have a car, but it's mostly used for bulk grocery shopping, family adventures, and sometimes job-related activities. We do 4000-5000 km (~3000 miles) a year tops.
Poland proud!!!! As an american 3rd generation pol i love my heritage and im so proud of their rise from communism!!! Christ remain with our pollocks! Whether russian or germans. We will always fight!❤
An interesting thing about drivers stopping at crossings. This is a change in the law that was introduced quite recently. Previously, drivers' behavior at crossings was rather rude. It gives me a positive boost that Poland is able to change quickly in such key issues and not only by dying out toxic old generations. However, we are learning something there. It was similar with smoking in pubs and restaurants. It seemed that if they introduced a ban, a national uprising would break out. Nothing of the sort happened. Today, fortunately, no one can imagine how one can smoke inside. It is a bit worse with getting rid of advertisements and ugliness from the space, although in Gdańsk and several cities it was done quite efficiently.
Hi Wes, I have been living in Montreal, Cdn for over 40 years and speak french better. Just to let you know... We dont have carjacking often in Montreal (Toronto have this type of problem much much more)...but cars got stolen all over Canada. And depending where you live in Montreal, you can live with no car ... It is a big big country...some places you will need a car.
Hey Wes, huge fan and I love this video... Can you elaborate on your thoughts on the declining population in Poland? Do you think it's sustainable or something that will improve in the near future?
If it's safety your after then, Iceland, Japan, Switzerland, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan and Malaysia and The Philippines and Micronesia and Polynesia.
It's not that drivers are at fault for hitting a person but we have a law that forces drivers to let you through if you're standing at the zebra passage.
East or central* the western part is disintegrating rapidly. Poland and Hungary are constantly slandered by western media outlets for not allowing them selves to be violated by EU policies.
@@JoseAMoreno21 they're "slandered" for breaking the law and taking down freedom of speech. As a Polish person, I wish they'd press our former government more.
One thing I'd like to mention is that basically all your reasons why you like Poland would fit for most of the other Eastern European countries like Hungaria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Serbia, Romania... you name it.
Warsaw has a lot of cool nature but you won't know where to find it as a tourist. Kraków has a simple layout, most things are concentrated in the centre. Warsaw is more like an agglomeration of different districts, that differ between each other. It's huge and has a lot of spots but you gotta know where to look. So normally - the people who live in Warsaw for a long time enjoy it, because they found the cool spots. And the people who only visit for a while don't like it, because they get stuck in the center and don't even find anything nice. So if you go to Warsaw you probably want someone with local knowledge (and similar taste to yours) to show you around, if you want to get the most of it.
Or, you can play geoguesser :) Warsaw is actually quite easy to distinct, and I'm saying it as a resident of 18 years (and frankly moving in the next month to Łódź)
You constantly repeat that Poland is safe because of homogenous population. Although this does play a major role in long perspective, in 90s, Poland was very dangerous, although nothing compared to US or Columbia.. That was a time of very high social, economical and political changes, inflation was incredibly high (much higher than nowadays) and above all, employment rate was low - that was probably the main factor, that there was a lot of petty crime, beatings, etc. We were afraid to go to certain places, especially in the dark, because of groups of young, stupid, bored, mostly drunk men, trying to extort the money or beat you. There was no gun crime, thou. Poland became well economically, grew a lot, those groups of men were gone, people have jobs, perspective plus internet, cell-phones - those all changed how it looks. Also, cameras in public places are almost everywhere nowadays and that also plays a crucial role. Newer generations are more into Internet than spending time outside, so there is no vandalism and petty thefts as it was before, people got wealthy, at least on the level they have better to do with their life then go on the streets harassing people. So to sum up, this is a mixture of homogenous society, economic prosperity and culture that makes the country safe. There are still some degenerates, drunks, but they are a minority and cannot be so bold as they were in the past, so they stick somewhere invisible, and the streets are safe. Outside bigger cities, in villages, we can keep homes and cars open, and we aren't afraid of anything, because we haven't heard of anything bad happening in many, many, many, many years. Drunk people are here and there, but they are just keeping to themselves and the worst they do is to leave the trash outside of gardens that we have to clean later...

It is wild to think Poland is now safer than Canada! Knowing Poland through the years over many trips I can agree.
From Western Canada.
Also Brussels, Liechtenstein, Belgium, The Netherlands and Finland and Denmark too. Czech Republic and Austria and Germany and Norway too.
If the weather in winter is bad you can go for wormer countries like storks do 😅
In Poland as a driver you have to stop when someone is crossing the street overwise you can be fined or even driving license revoked
as a polish student that is pretty poor I can live comfortable for like 250-300$
