- Kobold Press has been releasing playtest materials for their new game, Tales of the Valiant. While there is a lot to like, there are a few issues that I have so far and hope they get addressed. Will this game be competition for D&D? Only time will tell.

A very intersting breakdown. With your comments about the wizard, I like the fact that it's strictly magic-focused. There are other casters that can mix spells an dproffiencies or spells and martial. I just wish they would release playtest material for those so we can better compare them instead of two extremes.
As a person who loves KP and owns more of their books then DND, I too was disappointed such a creative great company basically just remade 5e with minor tweaks. New subscriber!
Excellent breakdown, thanks. I agree that after the initial vibe of Black Flag evoking a sort of rebel, renegade spirit, that seeing it be a fairly generic heroic fantasy taking strongly after 5E's base is a bit of a letdown.
Seems quite interesting, good explanation
Thanks for the run down!
I can't see how you don't see that the Wizard got too much if anything. Even with the Weapon Mastery we still have a huge caster/martail divide... And we still don't have MONK!
Kolbold Press is the best thing that 5e had to offer. I'm bummed that they stuck with the 5e ruleset. It's a broken rule set. I'm in love with Pathfinder. I'll miss KP products.
Perhaps you would find Level Up Advanced 5e more interesting if your looking something more forward than Black Flag .
Personally, I've hit a point where I'm not all that into 5E as a whole anymore, but thank you for the recommendation.
I don't understand the disappointment. They've been pretty clear what their design goals were here. Maybe, I'm conflating disappointment and surprise? I don't expect to be an early adopter because the whole OGL fiasco prompted me to look at new games and booted me out of a creative funk. I'm in no hurry to go back to 5e in any wrapper. But, if they complete the game I loved, and don't try to fix what isn't broken... "just like 5e" is exactly what I would want from this.
My opinion has changed slightly since I've been looking over more materials. When the initial announcement was revealed, I thought they were going to be making something more akin to their own original system, but I am hoping for the best with this as a whole.
