I'm really glad you opened this museum. I'm in Canada, and I don't know if I'll ever have the chance to come see it in person, but it's great to watch you branch out into some this challenging. Your journey is a joy to follow.
If youre thinking about going, just book your ticket and go! Ive been and its brilliant! Sam even took the time to show me how to use a lot of the equipment. Proper nice bloke. Well worth a visit!
Hands down shaping up like the best museum ever about old technology with a new twist.
“Do they sound different?” As they are intended as scientific/reference sources they shouldn’t. And I am impressed that despite their age, they have not degraded much. Seems as if a recapping is all they need to be good to go. Love to see it.
This is a beautiful way of giving obsolete equipment a new and productive life.
(And of course, they look awesome 😎)
Tube sounds so much smoother sweeping.
This is what I love about RUclips. 20 years ago this guy would've disappeared into obscurity. Maybe people passing through his hometown knew about the museum. Maybe a few more. But now hundreds of thousands
of people around the world get to enjoy his passion.
I've been watching for a while now, since about early-mid 2019. You've inspired me so much. I've been involved in a lot of diy projects and learning about electronics that I wouldn't be doing if you hadn't told me "Don't be scared to try it". Thank you
Those oscillators sound soo juicy!!!
at the 14 minute mark, did you imagine playing Atari 2600 from the 80s?
Nice to see you here Dr. Mix. I love your demonstrations of vintage gear like the Fairchild, LA-2A, Pultec, etc.
Ciao Claudio 💛
14:58 "YYYEEEAAAAHHH"! That's dripping out of my speakers, so nice
The valve version crackles a bit when you turn the knob in the high frequency regions. The solid state one stays clean and doesn’t seem to distort. Some of the noises sound like the laughing dog from Duck Hunt. It’s so similar.
A lot of the original music and sound design out of the BBC Radiophonic Laboratory was done on lab oscillators. Like Delia Derbyshire’s original performance of the Dr. Who theme was done on a test oscillator to tape and then sequenced with razorblade editing.
There's definitely a difference in sound, it's extremely subtle, the valve unit is a touch bit dirtier and crackles a bit
but more specifically the octave button pops a lot louder on the the valve unit
Short answer: no
Long answer: noooooooooooo
Got me there x'D
Yeah that was brilliant! 😁
I continue to be inspired by your energy and creativity.
I've sold a few things on ebay and it is clear that asking prices are entirely imaginary- there is no such thing as "what something is worth", only what someone will pay for it.
I have a really ancient BFO here in my shed, could be WW2 or even earlier. Valves are AR15 (Army reciever 15) and ARP24 (Army receiver pentode 24). Go on you know you need another one.....Just needs 200vdc HT and 6v for the heaters.
"The coffin, of course, is going into the toilet". I mean, where else would you want to put it.
The bedroom is a classic.
the way he said that though! cause you cant flush that!
Some of those sounds really intrigued/confused my dog.
He's investigated bird song on tv before, but this is the first time I've seen him search behind my speakers.
Someone in 2050: Why does this piece of ancient test equipment have a MIDI port?
Do you think MIDI 2.0 will have been adopted by then?
@@dysamoria lol
The Bruel & Kjaer's are superb additions to your museum !
You have done so much good work, I admire your Ideas and videos etc. I'm 70 and been in all of ,it from repair to design to video production of all things, I wish you continue on your quest.
William Stark USA Ohio.
"What's the point in hoarding things if you're not going to be using them" - so absolutely true. It is incredibly awesome that your museum will be interactive, Sam! This is really a gift to the people. I wish I didn't live halfway across the world in New Zealand
I sure would love to visit your museum one day, long way from here in central Australia. I have a workshop full of cool old tech equipment I have been gathering for past 30 odd years, love to pass it all on to your museum but freight would be an issue.
This gave me Classic Doctor Who flashbacks... (as well as Round 42, the DOS game). It's amazing how many things you can do with mechanically-built equipment, in pursuit of modifications for new applications.
It is SO COOL that you're making this dream happen.
I swear, I love this channel. You’re like a mad scientist. Nothing but unadulterated passion.
I can hear a clear difference between the two! It doesn't have any effect on their ability to be used musically, but the transistor one has a much more piercing sound, the tube one has a really really smooth sound to it to my ears.
Some of those sounds you make where you were pressing the reference signal button sounded just like the Phoenix arcade game
Found this fascinating, as I am a Big Fan of Valve Kit. My Hi-Fi system is valve driven from the Record Deck to the Speakers, via World Designs Phono3 and PSU3, to a World Audio Design KLP1 Pre-amp, which drives a World Audio Design K5881 Mk2 Valve Amplifier. Originally, these drove a pair of Quad ESL 57 Speakers, but now drive more convenient KEF speakers. I also have an Akai M8 Valve driven Reel-to-Reel tape recorder. I gave up on Transistors back in the 1970's. The only Transistor kit I have these days, are a CD player and a Cassette Player/Recorder.
When you plugged one output into the other input. Sounded exactly like the sound they used for EVA in Wall-E.
My cat enjoyed the sound, she came running in to see what was going on.
the valve one had much lower frequencies than the other model, it was so much deeper and almost bass-ey
Yeah It was also really smooth sounding, the transistor one was more piercing to my ears. I was listening on my studio headphones too.
The sounds are very much the same as early video games and Sci-Fi. Awesome stuff.
Love the long answer.
13:30 that's a unique stereo experience
I had this Bruel & Kjaer set myselve long ago. It was used by the Fokker aircraft company way back in time when the grass was green and sex was dirty.
You should've tested "overdriving" it as you showed with the Solid State version at 5:43 - Maybe the Valve version sounds different there because valves clip softer?
I feel like the magic of these machines come from the user interface and how limited it is. You're forced to keep it simple and the results are minimalistic, which can make for some interesting results :).
1k test tone -- now I know what was used for quite few cartoons years back.
Yep! When he started messing with that, I was like.. oh yep, I've heard this song before. :-)
Oh boy… I thought that the size and the current prices didn’t really add up but now you’re messing that thought all up. That creates quite the complex… thanks a lot Sam!! 😖😆👍
My cats didn't like this one. Especially when you started spinning knobs. I think it's brilliant!
"for something that literally goes wooOOOoooo" HAHAHAHAHA
Dave Young, Desmond Briscoe, Daphne Oram and Delia Derbyshire would have been proud of your work!
did Delia do the Dr. Who theme? I seem to faintly recognize that name and I wanna say its from watching a video on her technique of slowing down tape, splicing it, and all that jazz to get other worldly noises. the name Delia Derbyshire just like sticks out for some reason and that's what popped into my head. I can just google this cant I. yes yes I can.
How difficult would it be to turn one of those BFO's into a theremin? Are you gonna let people play with those things as a hands-on interactive display?
In the traditional sense of the Theremin, the two heterodyning inputs need to be ultrasonic so that only the beat frequency is in the AF range. In the other variation, a variable capacitance from your hand in the picofarad range passes near the antenna of a tuned LC circuit mixed with that of a fixed tuned circuit is amplified and the resulting variable voltage output can be used as the control voltage for a VCO like the equipment shown (front jack).
hey Sam! how do you learned electronics? you talk about all this electric stuff with so much ease, whats your secret?
Reading about stuff???
If you want to quickly learn basic analogue electronics, check out Moritz Klein's VCO series of videos.
Add some stickers to your merch and I'd definitely buy some.
13:30, that so reminds me of that moon base game I used to play on my Amiga...
Those were some really cool sounds. I really like seeing and hearing a genius at work. You rock lil daddy. Stay cool 😎
5:13 - Definitely some EDM vibes (Bass 305? Daft Punk? Can't quite place it), but that sweep with the 1kHz tone interrupting seems to be commonly sampled and reused!
Really interesting great work mate
Listening to you talk about and demonstrate all these gadgets is just captivating. You're definitely 1 in 9 billion absolutely awesome stuff! Been with you since the early days and every video astounds me! Keep up the amazing work mate. Absolutely awe inspiring 👍👍
Do you think it will be possible to link up every single thing you have into some kind of gargantuan monster machine of noise?
The toilet as a shower head in a public bathroom would be hilarious
Anyone else's cats very interested in the higher pitched sounds? My cats ears were waving around during those parts as he was trying to figure out where it was coming from, it was adorable, ha
14:08 When you get to the goal post in Super Mario World
More Sambach!
If you wanna see oscillators being used for music, check out the duo Silver Apples. The song Gypsy love is fantastic.
Been watching both you and Hainbach playing with these....
B+J devices , I particularly enjoy once you got them all hooked up as a studio of test gear.
I too, am interested in the external modulation and haven't seen either of you try what immediately struck me ( probably because I have also been watching Aaron Lanterman go deep on the DKI synergy) but have you tried using one device to modulate another...hypothetically you should be able to setup algorithms of the devices similar to the FM algorithms of the Synergy and Dx7 , and create some really banging FM sounds that you can then sequence.
You can. Next vid is on modulation as there is a mod required. I'm not the biggest fan of fm sounds like that and you'd need external vca's to make it do that but it's certainly possible! I'm making modules to make this work in the coming week.
I had to get my headphones to watch this video, as my dog was not enjoying it as much as I was. Lol
the Chemical bro's must have one or two of them. great vid thanks.
Aw geez Cathode Ray Dude is gonna love the camera room :D (I do too)
My cat did not like the sounds from this video at all, but I sure as hell did. Nice one man!
They sound quite distinct to my ear. Sounds like less noise on the valve signal, I hear less HF even at lower freqs. Might be as simple as some HF rolloff, but its there at all freqs.
Vacuum tube version makes some "static" clicks, when you are pushing button. Probably there is some HV on button contacts. This is the only difference I've noticed.
You could create some killer dub with these
Frequency modulation is so friggen cool
8:06 sounds like the SFX from every episode of Dr. Who from about 1970-1975
Spaceship sounds!!! Wooo!
You’ve reinvented the BBC Radiophonic Workshop! Cool!
I wonder how many sounds in the original Twilight Zone series were made with old test equipment?
Or "The Outer Limits"?
@@imfrcd For sure!
Speaking of which, I saw _Forbidden Planet_ the other day. The plot has... not aged well. The soundtrack, however, remains excellent.
If I could upvote this 1000 times. I would.
Some absolutely wizard sounds hyear.
Very C64 Insects in space, Drlller and Parralax vibes.
Sam, did you just make chiptune and FM with valves? Six of those with a patch bay plugged into a filter and amplifier and you have a valve DX7!
no telescrubbies, this is stuff for real man
Slap a few Theremins around the place as the immediate interaction will get some people making sounds.
there is 1 for people to play on, its quite surprising as most people have never heard of one. which we found a bit surprising
I am glad that you use your powers for good and not evil!!!! :-)
Excellent!
Those sound cool as heck with a delay.
I can hear a difference between the two. Of course the eternal debate is "which one is better?" for which that answer is "neither". Just depends on what sound you're shooting for.
Hey Sam, I have a type 1017 and a 1013…both with the remote jacks on the front… going to try and control the modulation from an SQ-1 sequencer… would like to solder a jack to the modulation pin on the front…. Not sure which wires go where? Ie which wire do I solder to the pin and where to solder the other? ( using an audio lead) thanks Greg 😊
Should have hooked them up to a spectrum analyzer to see the difference.
It'd be cool to do some sort of Nam June Paik thing with all those video cameras.
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO short answer is no, the long answer is NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, Nice! nearly spat out my coffee on that one.
Cool stuff. Would be amazing to have a spectrum analyzer hooked up to this so you can really see what the knobs do in terms of frequency. It especially makes modulation quite intuitive. Just try it out for yourself with something like Spectroid (for Android phones) when playing the part of this video when he's messing with one oscillator to modulate the other.
Hi! 450k subscribers!
Sounds like the Clangers.
i have 6 piece 1022 in my workspace speaker driver production.
Im sure Dr who was about to kick in towards the 14 ,53 mark..
May I suggest you change the mains voltage selectors to 240V, since you have at least 230V there. The iron cores in the transformers might otherwise go into magnetic saturation and draw more current.
Those sounds are driving my cat up the wall lol
5:03 Sounds like the song Roboter from Kraftwerk in 1978
I like your long answer 😂😂😂
What about three STRYMON Pedals i.e the Mobius,Bluesky and Timeline might be the way to go.
My bird did go absolutely wayhire from either the solid state and the vacuum tube sounds so this should be conclusive evidence that they're the same
Is it just me or was the low end better on the transistor version?
Another idea, if you wanted a pseudo-trigger/volume control you could add a vactrol to control the output volume. Pretty simple but effective, plus also at audio-rates you may get some weird stuff too.
The modular/patchbay will have vca’a amongst loads of things so no need for volume stuff :D
@@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER Ah yeah of course! I just brought it up since I threw a buncha vactrols in series with the controls on some similar audio test equipment and used those for frequency pitch, volume, etc. A poor man's solution. :)
13:40 Reminds me of the Portal 2 Sound Track. 14:53 And the robot sounds from Gunman Chronicles.
Maybe he could make a bit of money on the side by selling 1-7 second sound bytes in a pack for use in short films and music. Maybe provide an exclusive sound bank to be used in a university setting.
14:30 Back to Tom Dissevelt, Kid Baltan and Delia Derbyshire? :)
Sounded like the dog laughing on duck hunt and Wall.E
I feel like there's also an opportunity for lissajous graphics here. 😁👍
