Which is why you really should not purchase booster boxes for any reason other than to draft with friends. Never chase cards from packs, always buy singles.
Sometimes you get stuff you wouldn't have bought normally and then end up finding something new you like, too. I'll buy a set booster box of a set if I like the whole set just for the experience. But often I'll still do singles
During All Will Be One, main things I wanted were Tyrannex Rex, Ichor Moon Gauntlet, and the Dominus cycle. Got the first two and none of the dominus but I did pull a Elesh Norn and Obliterator. After that, just getting singles for March of the Machine since mainly need specific cards for commander and not a crap ton of stuff I won't be using.
My draft booster box of Modern Horizons 2 only had one single fetchland. But it did happen to be a Misty Rainforest. Conversely, my set booster display of Modern Horizons 2 had all fetchies *except* for Misty Rainforest. But that retro foil Scalding Tarn made up for it.
Here's a challenge for every booster gamblers / addicts. Make a deck with 93 lands and 7 treasure tokens. Shuffle them and try to draw all 7 treasures in opening hand (repeatable). If you succeed, you can buy the box / booster you want. If you don't then just buy singles. Might save you some thoughts spending money on gacha cards.
@@jingizrPretty sure that's a 7% to draw a single treasure when you draw a card. To draw all seven would be 7/100 * 6/99 * 5/98 * 4/97 * 3/96 * 2/95 * 1/94. Because I don't care to do the actual math, I'll assume the deck stays 100 cards and that gives an answer of about 5/100000000000. That's pretty unlikely. This is a good tip to save money. Assuming that I did the math right.
Amen to that, brother. I like the feel of getting something cool by chance as opposed to buying it outright. Plus, I don't really worry about getting a playset because I just swap cards based on the deck I'm using.
I try to stick to buy only single, but sometimes there is a set where i just want everything. That's why i bought a box of ikoria when it came out, because i love mutate. Then i got the singles that i missed.
I buy boxes when they release, I like cracking packs, I like to build from what I manage to pull, and sometimes I get some crazy results, like two portal to phyrexia in the same box, damn near paying for a display by themselves
If there’s a specific card in a set I’m looking for, then I will refuse to open packs for it. At that point, it goes from opening packs for fun to gambling, and I’m not much for gambling.
My suggestion is to buy boxes of sets you like that have lots of good uncommons you’ll use. I never felt bad about how much MH1 or 2 I got because of all the generous gifts, or other useful cards. Also you better like the subthemes of the set in case future sets are printed that support them more. I got a fair bit of Eldraine because there were a lot of cool mechanics from food, sagas, Adventures. And now I have Tom Bombadill as a saga commander with Eldraine set around the corner. Literally the only thing stopping me from buying singles rather than boxes is my addiction to cracking packs. I swear if they packaged the singles I order in booster packs, I’d be set. 😂
My life trying to get that one card I want from a set, repeatedly failing to justify biting the bullet up front for that one card, and ending up tripling the cost on the back end over time. ❤
The buy singles advice is really good if you're only ever building decks, but I prefer to buy a box at each release I'm interested in and then keep them in "inventory", building decks with the cards I have. This means I get to work out how to get value out of what I have instead of just copying someone's deck list. I dunno, I just feel like building decks is at least half of the game and buying singles for decks instead of filling out spots on your own creations is like buying pre painted Warhammer.
Funny thing, my first box I bought for cracking Packs was a MH2 Set booster box and I got 5 fetches (one old border foil) 1 Ragavan and two incarnations (endruance and grief) and a bunch of other stuff I used for building kitchentable modern decks to play with friends. Never touched a Set box again since I know this was a one time thing. Besg thing you can do with boxes is buying a draft display and saving it to draft later or use the boosters for a chaos draft
Was building a goblin deck one Saturday night and had a few too many to drink. Had an entire draft booster box of Dominaria remastered. Was looking for pashalik mons and realized that there was a chance he could be in the box. So I started opening, the very last card of the very last pack I pulled pashalik. I cheered so loud my dog came to see if I was ok. Needless to say I don’t have the box anymore for the draft night I was planning.
Cracking packs is about the rush of taking a risk!!!! It’s an inefficient way to get the cards you want, but it’s fun! Better idea is to draft and then sell or trade what you pull in your draft packs!
I pulled a retro border misty rainforest out of the first pack I ever bought. Not my biggest pull at $40 but hey it has marked a trend. I make more than what I spent on almost every pack I get. I have a little box of cards worth over 2k sitting here thats all come out of maybe 30ish packs if i had to guess. That's all I've ever opened because I only started playing like a month ago
Ragavan, Urza's Saga, Archon of Cruelty, and all of the "pitch" elementals are high value cards also available in MH2 outside of fetchlands. EV on a box of MH2 should exceed retail value even after 2 years. Seems good.
I once bought 3 packs and got 2 Arid Mesa and 1 Marsh Flats and some other good stuff. Sonce then I haven't buy any packs because I guess all my luck is gone now after those pulls.
I used to buy 20 pack bundles and pull 1 every time. I also didn't know that fetches were worth 40-60$ a pop because they don't print them all the time. TuT I traded so many away for commander resources.
I buy boxes because I’m building my collection back up and I just want to have a repository of cards so I don’t have a $125 order on TCG player every 2 months. But I buy singles when I need them for specific things.
I purchased: 2 draft, 3 set, and 4 collectors boxes of MH2 thinking that. I pulled one ragavan, and didn’t get two of each fetch land. I had two collectors boxes (second printing) that each had zero fetches. I have witnesses, your honor. I didn’t pull a play set of elementals either.
