  • The Long-billed Spiderhunter (Arachnothera robusta) is a fascinating bird species found in Southeast Asia. Known for its exceptionally long bill and specialized feeding habits, this bird belongs to the Nectariniidae family.
Adult Long-billed Spiderhunters typically measure around 16 to 18 centimeters in length, with their long, curved bill accounting for a significant portion of their total length. Their plumage is generally olive-green on the upperparts and yellowish on the underparts, with a streaked throat and breast. The long, decurved bill is perfectly adapted for accessing nectar deep within flowers, making it one of the most distinctive features of this species.
Long-billed Spiderhunters inhabit a variety of forested environments, including lowland and montane rainforests, forest edges, and secondary growth forests. They are commonly found in countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. These birds prefer habitats with abundant flowering plants and trees that provide nectar, their primary food source.
Long-billed Spiderhunters are primarily nectarivorous, feeding on the nectar of various flowering plants. They use their long bills to probe deep into flowers, extracting nectar with their brush-tipped tongues. In addition to nectar, they also consume insects and spiders, particularly during the breeding season when they need additional protein to feed their chicks.
During the breeding season, Long-billed Spiderhunters build cup-shaped nests from plant fibers, leaves, and spider silk, usually suspended from the underside of large leaves or branches. The female typically lays a clutch of two eggs, which she incubates for about two weeks. After hatching, both parents participate in feeding and caring for the chicks until they fledge.
The Long-billed Spiderhunter is not currently considered globally threatened and is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN. However, like many forest-dependent species, local populations can be affected by habitat loss and fragmentation due to deforestation and human activities. Conservation efforts aimed at preserving and restoring suitable habitats are essential for ensuring the continued survival of this species.
The Long-billed Spiderhunter's remarkable bill and specialized feeding habits make it a fascinating subject for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Its presence in diverse forest habitats highlights the importance of conserving these ecosystems to support a wide range of wildlife, including nectar-feeding birds like the Long-billed Spiderhunter.
