      I would recommend you be careful with using baskets for material items. I was on another channel today and she mentioned about some splinters getting into the material of her towels and TP (From various baskets and brands, so not being from a cheap brand only).
      So I'm kinda worried about it getting into the material of your kid's knee pads 😢

    Your experiment to let clutter build up is actually really smart because it physically SHOWS you where you should prioritize a new “habit” or organization technique / routine. Which is crucial when you have a new space and new life routines to adjust to

      I always thought of my mom as being the best because my two siblings and I had two jobs our entire childhood and adolescence: to have fun at home and at school. Somehow, all three of us did great in school. We never got scolded for low grades and ended up getting full college scholarships. At home, we were never asked to help with chores because our job was to play. Somehow, all three adult siblings love to have super organized, clutter free houses. Go figure 🤷🏻‍♂️ I ended up watching these types of videos because it’s enjoyable to see others who also enjoy clean, well-organized interiors.

    One of the things I appreciate about your approach to decluttering is that you give the “why” the problem exists, then the solutions. I am an empty nester in a small apartment and on the decluttering journey for eight years. My mantras are “take it there now”, “do it now”, and “15 minutes matter “. In spite of seeming tidy and organized the need to identify those hidden hot spots and purging and maintaining still exist.

    Simply love listening to your videos. These are ideas that can be easily adopted and implemented without fuss. I think you give very sage advice to working families. I would only make one small comment if I could, as a teacher librarian, I would keep the library books separate from your personal books. I always suggest to parents to have a cloth bag, or library basket or something that’s dedicated just for the Library books and keep that on their door knobs or in a specific spot so they always know where to return them. Nothing is worse than looking for that one book that you desperately need to return with two hours to go before the Library closes or for the end of the school year and you know the fines will be charged. Keep up all you do. Always fun to see what is new and happen back stateside.💜

    I've been decluttering my garage and found that in my city there is no garbage collection service for hazardous household waste like anti-freeze, paint, batteries, fertilizer, insecticide, etc.
    I found out that my area has a Hazardous Household Waste Collection Day for the entire county, but it's only from 8 am to 2 pm one day a year.
    I had to take time off work to go there, but it was really easy, although the line of cars was long so it was about 30 mins of wait time.
    Just an FYI if anyone else has a similar issue going on.
    It was SO worth it! Finally that junk is cleared out of my garage and my conscience is clear 😄

      @theenokimarauder 6 месяцев назад +1

      Wow! I'm curious where you live! Our county landfill does a free Hazardous Household Waste Collection Day about twice per month for residents, but we can also drop off that stuff any other day they're open it just costs $ per car (instead of being free for residents). I can't imagine once per year! I'd definitely be marking that on my calendar with at least 3 reminders!

    I laughed at the peeking through the window bit. haha. Then I laughed at the boing door jam thing.
    I'm not one who wants "extra" like hangers and such. Those give me reason to want to use them then.
    Although some of your ideas LOOK BETTER in an organized way, it creates storage that makes people tend to think they need to fill. . .so if the basket eventually becomes empty as a minimalist, it gives reason to fill the basket with more stuff over time. Like. . .my oldest son has a pair of sneakers and a pair of flip flops and those are his shoes. For some people, having a shoe rack might have space and may make him want to get a lot more shoes to fill in the spaces. It is how a lot of people's brains work. Because you have been able to instill good habits over time, that may not be the case for you, but for new minimalists it might, is what I am saying. For some people, if they become a minimalist, declutter shoes, and find they only need 3 or 4 pairs, but have a rack with rows. . .they should get rid of the rack too. I guess that is what I mean.
    I recently read a book that was okay called "Stop Buying Bins" that explain this too.

    Over Christmas I broke up and trashed all the styrofoam from boxes around the house and ripped up the cardboard. The foam took a few days to do but as the trash bin is half size to the recycling, it took many months to get rid of. I could have filled up my car three times over with it. I was gobsmacked as I’ve been decluttering for years but always kept the boxes in case of moving or housing the freestanding fans, etc. I realised I didn’t need the foam to house the fans during winter. Was a huge job but so worth it. Not housing stuff in boxes takes up a lot less room.

    I’ve been following Marie Diamond’s feng shui process for the past month and have seen almost incredible changes in my life and the lives of everyone living at home. One of the first things she teaches is: no shoes, clothes or boxes at the entrance to the house. Only objects of beauty to welcome you as you and your guests enter. Treat the house the way you would if you entering your castle as a queen or king. Shoes, jackets and boxes are never a part of the entrance to a castle 🏰

    • @JamieM470
      @JamieM470 6 месяцев назад +2

      It's a good idea but where do you put those things if you have no shoe rack or coat hooks or table top?
      Not everyone has a coat closet, and expecting everyone to remove their shoes and jackets, then carry them to another room each time they enter, then go retrieve their stuff from that room and carry it back to the door to put it on in order to leave might be ideal, but it's not realistic, reasonable or functional.
      And if it's not realistic, reasonable, or functional, it's simply not going to happen.
      A pretty shoe storage cabinet would be nice, but that also wouldn't work for visual people. Hidden storage actually causes them aggravation/stress.
      You have to work with what you have. Your family's personal organization types and the type of home you have.

      Not that much in our area for household trash! The only difference for us now is we have to take the trash out OURSELVES and in Germany the trash collectors would come in to the Hof to get the trash of the ENTIRE building. I actually find it easier to donate/recycle clothes, shoes, etc here, but that could be due to language barriers and lack of familiarity on my part. ✌️☺️

    your reminder to find a spot that is "bugging" you got me to clean out the beverage drawer in our freezer. My husband (who does NOT share my declutter mindset and is, truthfully, a bit of a hoarder) had a single large can of a specific type of beer that just made organization of that drawer more difficult. It's been there a good two years (he says one), and I decided to dump it finally. Wouldn't you know it? He saw the can in the garbage can and said, "I was going to drink that this week!" (of course you were) He's a little miffed at me. I felt bad since he was "saving it for a special occassion" as it was some sort of "special" beer, but then I pulled the can out of the garbage to check the expiration 5/11/23! Per him, "everyone knows alcohol doesn't have an expiration date." *sigh*

      No problem! We have the small coat closet you see in the video and the large one is where the furnace, water heater, etc are - there’s no space.

      Something I've discovered over the years is that, while at some point I may have had plenty of color, for example, I still had gaps of functionality in my wardrobe. In my case, once I bought a single additional cardigan and three nice but casual t-shirts/tanks, everything suddenly seemed to work so much better!
      Also, as a side note, ever since I decided on a specific color palette that allows every piece in my closet to coordinate, I have felt so much happier with what I have to choose from 😊

    I've been decluttering on and off for almost two years now, but recently my fiance moved into my one-room apartment (we're saving for a bigger place) and well... "Darling, I don't find thing A convenient so I need to bring or buy thing B, is it okay?". Honestly, no, it's not, not okay, I spent so much time making sure I have only the most useful and convenient stuff and now you say it's not useful and not convenient enough for you and you need a double of everything I ALREADY HAVE RIGHT HERE 😅 I said things like "Well, why can't you just get used to my wooden spatula??" but no. Obviously, it's a stupid reason to fight. And he tries to understand my position. And if he really needs something, obviously he can have it. But still I feel defeated 😓

    • @AtoZenLife

      I completely get this! Relationships definitely require compromise…like me not exploding at my husband every time he leaves his jackets and socks laying around. 😅

    I do not recommend hanging bags on doors
    The hinges can give way and wear out due to constant loading

    • @Jessica_Jones
      @Jessica_Jones 6 месяцев назад

      If it's a sturdy-hinged door and the bags aren't too weighty, it usually isn't an issue, but yeah, I've definitely seen my share of questionable doors that probably could not support anything beyond the hook itself! 😅

    Fun vlog.. but Nope!.. I don't have ANY trash "lying around" the house (on floors, tables, in cupboards etc). My trash is only in trash/recycle bins.. i always immediately put stuff in trash bins.. if upstairs.. put it at the top of stairs to come down. Then I always take stuff up and down stairs each time I go up and down, so I never get a build up of stuff.
    But definitely have other systems that don't work.. eg paper clutter in kitchen... so that needs work!

    If you let the "bike boxes" with all the packaging inside stay in your house this long instead of recycling on a regular basis then no decluttering sessions or organizational tops will help you. No one little bit.
