I actually find that cotton batting can make the quilt quite stiff in the beginning. You have to wash it and use it a number of times for it to get drapey and cuddly. Can’t much tell the difference between cotton and cotton/poly blends. I personally don’t like working with a 100% polyester batting but I have no objection to it in the finished quilt. Bamboo blends are lovely and drapey and lightweight. Can’t speak to durability. (I had a bamboo sheet set once that did NOT last well.) Just working on my first wool batting in a quilt. Puffier than I expected but it gives great definition to the quilting. Just my two cents! Glad to see you back!!!
If I want to experiment with a new batting, I make placemats or table runners. I get to see how it’s going to act, and I have minimal investment in both materials and time.
I love Hobbs 80\20. Ghee you middle child off to college. Hard to believe since remember your book with your oldest child. Always enjoy your videos. Thanks
The very first quilt I ever made, I used two layers of batting. Mind you, I was quilting it on a sit down domestic machine. 😱😱 Omg! It was SO heavy and took me FOREVER to quilt. Like-- five years. Never made that mistake again!
The color of batting definitely makes a difference. If you put a natural color batting under a quilt top with a lot of white in it, the white looks more dull and the colors next to it also appear a little more dull. I always use a white batting under any quilt with any significant amount of white in the quilt top, so that the white in the quilt top looks clean, clear and true. Personally, I use 80/20 Warm and White brand most of the time due to budget constraints. I have also used Hobbs and Quilters Dream when my budget permits.
I love Quilter’s Dream wool batting and use it most of the time. I use Quilter’s Dream cotton for a few quilts. Can’t use polyester or 80/20 because it makes my skin crawl when I touch it!
Hi, Angela! Glad you're back. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed some well-deserved quality time this summer with your family. I know it's a cliche but time goes by so quickly! Even my grandchildren are adults now. Anyway I wasn't able to catch you live but really enjoyed today's chat. Being a relatively newbee, I learned things I've often wondered about. Is it possible to somehow download your presentation points? The information was so succinct and helpful.
Bamboo is wonderful for hand quilting. It’s thin and your needle just glides through it. I like the cotton/bamboo/wool blend, but it’s very hard to get
Hi Angela, I'm in Madagascar at the moment and just got internet so missed you live. I do have a question about fusible. Do you fuse the front first and then the back or opposite. I'm hearing both from others. Good to see you all refreshed!
Here in Alberta most of the quilters use Hobbs 80/20. My granddaughters love polyester 😂as it is fluffy and soft. I would like to try a wool batting maybe with other. I do like the idea of bamboo. Thanks
I’m so glad to have you back. But I’m glad you had good family time. I had to laugh when you mentioned silk with Bambo. I’m sorry o missed the live today. Ugh. I checked every week then forgot. Ugh. You are awsome. I quilted using two layers I think 80/20 cotton. And boy it was heavy. I saw you on a quilt so. I have thoughts on teaching.
If you want a thin 'batting,' look for well washed fannel sheets that have all the shrinkage out. Thrift stores can be a good source for these sheets. Just size up and cut away the extra. Those sheets make a warm but very lightweigt quilt.
So happy to see your back. Hope you enjoyed your time off. My husband likes a heavy quilt, which is more weight? What's your live schedule also please. thanks!
So my question on the blended batting, or sandwiching different batting’s together, such as bamboo batting and wool batting, or cotton batting with bamboo batting…. do you need to worry about the thread, being a different material compared to your batting and overwhelming the strength? For example, a polyester like glide or poly neon thread could cut through a cotton because it’s stronger than the batting affecting how long the quilt will last? So I’ve heard that can be true for a cotton fabric with cotton batting that you might want to do it all in cotton thread?
You can contact the hospitals for their cotton bed blankets, the ones they bring you warm, not the top ones. My husband gets them in bundles to use for rags at work, and there is nothing wrong with them. You could double or triple layer them.
I've mostly used an all cotton batting that I get from JoAnns, but I've recently tried Quilters Dream and really liked it. I think I'm going to try the bamboo next.
Im interested in making my own comforter (which generally requires a thicker batting than quilting). Since I cant find black comforter batting ANYWHERE, Ide really love to dye it black so that the outside reflects a darker more opaque hue. Is this possible? If so does anyone have any recommendations on how i could dye comforter batting?
If you use 100 % cotton, just realize that your quilt will probably shrink. Last quilt I made, I used all cotton and was shocked to see how much the quilt had shrunk after I washed and dried it. It shrunk 3.5” all around. If I had known, I would have made a wider border 😅.
Oh and were there any specials today. You know those specials or freebies are you from you. Even though I always joke Wouk you that I never win. Lol. Have a good weekend.
Thank you. I have been using polyester, but how I will 80/20 grateful for your work.

Thanks Angela, great info on the batting options.

Thanks for the video. Just a comment on bamboo batting - it can be very slow to dry after washing.

I’m in Alberta too! Wabamun!
Hello from Louisiana! When using 2 layers of batting, do you use it all over or only in the spots that you want to show a lot?

So happy you are back!!!! What’s your preference for batting with a tshirt quilt???
GOOD to see you again!

A thick cotton batting is heavy!!
What longarm needle size should be used with Soft n Stable?

Hello! So glad you are back!! When is the next challenge?

Did your daughter start college at MSU in Springfield? I only live 30 miles from there and went to undergrad there too.
❤
I can never tell which side is which on my Quilter's Dream cotton/poly

Polyester will not block. So if you are doing a show quilt, or if square matters and you want to block, do not go with poly.
I was told the 'industry standard' for cotton shrinkage, is 3%
Hi from Nl, canada
Oh and were there any specials today. You know those specials or freebies are you from you. Even though I always joke Wouk you that I never win. Lol. Have a good weekend.
Have you used quilt basting spray. Lol
Love it! I use it for everything but a really large quilt like king size may need extra support from pins or something.
