As a Dutch citizen a can say that Amsterdam is far from popular in the Netherlands as a place to visit.
The Netherlands outside Amsterdam is a 1000 times more beautfill and inspiring that Amsterdam. The people outside of Amsterdam are more friendly, relaxed and educated.
It's like stupid tourists think that Amsterdam is the Neterlands. Like New Yorks is the USA and London is the UK.
