28:16 Perhaps a Mobius strip or a Klein bottle would be good analogies to the 'foldiness' of being that Merlau-Ponty attempts to reveal: in both cases they are geometrical objects that have a single side that appears to be two sides because of the way that the object is folded in upon itself.
Amazing! More Merleau-Ponty, please! (Particularly selections from “The Visible and the Invisible” or the chapter from “Sings” titled “The Indirect Language and the Voices of Silence” or any secondary literature on M-P, like Toadvine or M.C. Dillon!)
Merleau-Ponty had a somewhat high-pitched voice, but a clear timbre and the beautiful pronunciation of that particular time and place, with measured, considered sentences that I could listen to for hours. There are good examples of this at Philosophy Overdose, with English subtitles. I find it seductively elegant.
Was wondering if the concept of embodiment would get discussed along with animal consciousness. From my understanding, phenomenology was an antidote to behavioralism that basically kept discussions of mind/consciousness out of the picture in the study of human behavior. Phenomenology (if I'm understanding anything I've read) would place primacy on lived experience and first person accounts of the world. I've been researching sleep paralysis for some time, and one of the most recent theories about it appeared in issue of the Journal of Consciousness studies that focused on inter-subjectivity. In his article over sleep paralysis, J.A Cheyne argues that the awareness of the sensation of paralysis is integral to shaping the overall experience. In particular, what he refers to as the intruder variant (which is an encounter with a shadowy "other") of SP. This understanding of SP could be considered an embodied approach. This led me down a few paths on different subjects like perception and action, and JJ Gibson's ecological psychology. In any case, enjoyed the discussion. Francisco Varela and Evan Thompson's works are good reads on the topic.
Can you guys develop an in-person seminar on how to apply Phenomenology to real life? Like in personal interactions? That would be valuable, I think. I'd pay.
Thanks for the video and the topic, its really interesting! I had a question though: Can the labor of trying to understand another person be consider a meta dialogue or relation of experiencing the each other? Maybe not in an equal way, as the concept Ellie's concept of hermeneutic points out the dynamics of burden in such effort. This since, in this video both of you expressed that the meta aspect of the hands extension metaphor is harder to grasp or even breaks when two or more people are sensing each other. Sorry if my question may seem odd. I'm not train in phenomenology or even philosophy. I come from the discipline of social communication, and as a field of knowledge and research, the interpersonal level of communication has aspects of reflexivity and feedback: a conversation for example. Even the concept of intercultural communication of Miquel Rodrigo Alsina gives as a word to describing the difficult waters of relating to people with different cultural background. I know Richard L. Lanigan has a book on called The Phenomenology of Communication: Merleau-Ponty's Thematics in Communicology and Semiology, which I have but still haven't read in a deep way, and which might help to answer my question.
The idea of shadow inevitably invokes Plato. This interesting discussion made me think of comprésence as the condensation of the past with the present, such that, for example, any philosopher will be influenced by all previous philosophers. By extension, there is a difference between abstract thought (which condenses the past with the present, and anticipates the future), and physical sensibility, (which could be said to be primarily about survival (knowledge of risk based on the past), enjoyment (of the present) and reproduction (for the future). I now wonder if T S Eliot was influenced by Merleau-Ponty in writing ‘Tradition and the Individual Talent’.
22:45 or is there a transcendental argument to be made such that ordinary human interactions do require a third subjectivity (maybe that is the difference between animalia and men, or narcissism and social maturity) that we take for granted or do not make explicit in our language
Other minds could be not as real as mine because I cannot perceive what in their mind. But we still perceive other minds. The more familiar with others, the more can you perceive them, like parent-kid, spouses, best friends. It will be never 100% of course. But also never 0% because as human beings we share the same foundation of communication even we cannot speak each other's languages and we are from very different cultures. Then isn't this self-to-other mind relation also apply to self-self mind relation? For example, when I want to eat an icecream, i have 2choices in my fridge, chocolate and vanillna. Do I REALLY know which one I want? I do not actually, I know only when I choose one. Though methods like learning, engaging in the activities etc I can learn more about myself, but never 100%, just like i can learn more about other person.
Don't worry at the After Party you will be able to know another's mind. Anyone's you'd like to. You can live their entire life just like they did if you find them that interesting. All will be disclosed. Nothing is hidden nor hidable at the After Party : )
I find Merleau-Ponty really interesting. Would love to see more on his work. On the other hand I‘m always happy about any new Overthink Video.

I had to look up dates. I find it helpful to match great thinkers with dates to form context. Finally got the point at 22:00…lol Brilliant episode .
thank you for sharing...help thinker to think...with better view...

Was the green Husserl book placement intentional? Sorry I meant H-word.

Could you do some videos on Schelling?
I love Anderson's listening/thinking face.
