1:39 One unfun fact is that sometimes if ONE person does something wrong in North Korea they may punish their relatives as well. The government thinks that "evil" runs in families and will punish relatives that did NOT try to do anything the government has issue with. Edit: Oh this video mentions that later.
It’s horrible they have the 3 generation punishment system, if one person is guilty the entire family is locked up. The subsequent two generations of that family are then born in the camp and live their lives locked up inside.
is it really because the government thinks evil runs in families? i thought they just put in that measure so people will think twice before doing something that goes against the rules
It's done to dissuade dissent, not because they think "evil" genuinely runs in families. It's brilliant, because with this system parents will indoctrinate their children to be model NK citizens, instilling within children the guilt and fear necessary to keep them from attempting to defect from the country since it'll damn them all.
There’s no way I could pick just one heartbreaking video. They’re all a human tragedy. It’s a shame that there’s not much (if any) thing we can do to help them.
A point about Otto's story, the other tourist in his group said that Otto was not in the hotel at the time he allegedly took the propaganda poster. It is likely NK wanted a hostage as a bargain chip and staged the event
nope. the thing about the friends having a video of him with the timestamp? the time that tourists provide is ALWAYS questioned, and in NK where there's no internet at all, it's a sure thing that it proves nothing at all. Watch the video of the former NK spy sharing his thoughts about Otto's case, since people all over like to run their mouths that it was a complete set up ...
as well as the absolute disrespect for him in this video, he was not shocked into coma, he was beaten to death. blind, deaf and severely brain damaged from the torture he had to go through, doesnt matter if he took the poster or not (which he didnt since clearly there was witnesses that he didnt)

North Korea is so damn interesting and terrifying at the same time. It’s depressing to think of how fucked up a leader could be to allow their country to be like this.
The fact they will treat children with such cruelty makes me angry beyond belief. The people working in the government in North Korea and their dumb leader are just evil. I don't think anything can change their actions and I just hope they pass from this life soon. The people who escaped are lucky and I'm glad they share what life was like inside that terrible country. It's so sad to know there is little we can do to help that country because of how closed off it is. We can only hope and pray.

All your values are culturally dictated, all your beliefs are preached, your freedom of choice is an illusion, your freedom of speech is purposely abused so that everybody gets focused on futile problems. etc etc.
There's a reason why they go to insane lengths to stop people leaving... There would be nobody left to lord over if the country wasn't a giant prison. Nobody wants to live in a hell-hole like that. Anyone with empathy and humility would realize that they were an awful leader when they saw citizens risk death and torture to get away from you.
I've read that, in the past centuries, slaves used to live up to their 30s and definitely never beyond their 40s, because their hard endless daily work, punishments and underfeeding were so intense that they would live their entire lives severely underweight, weak, frequently sick, and aging way faster than a free person. The girl shown at 08:34 encapsulates all this. She fundamentally lives a life very similar to that of an actual slave: she looks underfed and underweight, very tired, sad and hopeless. She's probably sick and she also looks older than she actually is. Very sad and outrageous to watch.
Usually stealing a poster from a hotel gets you a warning or simply kicked out of the building and told to leave, but in north korea legit gives you life in prison.
@@kellykimbi9101 Sorry for responding late Yes living in NK is horrible, no doubt about it, but I'd still choose it over some African countries like Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan etc, also in NK they don't kill you for watching movies, in fact Kim Jong Un is a far more merciful leader than his father and grandfather who were much much worse. His grandfather was in a league of his own, being responsible for half of NK's population death, so while Kim Jong Un is a bad dictator and living in NK is bad, Eritrea, South Sudan and Somalia are still far worse, a reason for that is of course the Western countries which control Africa, and I'm sorry for that but still...
Well when fatty mc fat spends all his country’s money and resources on nukes instead of helping his people, it’s kinda hard to liberate the North Korean population without the fear of nukes being used
there absolutely is a lot we can do about it, the reason our governments don't bother is because it costs lots of money and north korea doesn't have much to offer. If the country was full of natural resources America and the UK would be all over their ass with the biggest armies available but they have nothing and despite all our bullshit about human rights the people in charge don't work for free. @@johansolberg I remember this video posted a long time ago. The brutal arrest of the child and his mother as well as the irruption of the Chinese policemen on the threshold of the embassy had created an enormous scandal in the world. The protests had been so strong that the Chinese authorities had given up repatriating the mother and child to North Korea. The authorities had therefore released these two refugees who then went to South Korea. This is one of the few, if not perhaps the only, cases where North Korean refugees who had been arrested in China were not returned to North Korea. Now the laws have become so tough that refugees don't ask asylum or help from the foreign embassies in China, including the South Korean embassy. In fact, embassies can no longer guarantee them refuge or passage to South Korea. That's why refugees need go to other countries (like Thailand for example) before being arrested (if they are too far from embassies) and asking for asylum in South Korea. They spend a few weeks in prison in these countries before being released to go to South Korea as soon as this country issues them documents to go there.
this is happening since the country was founded about 70 years ago. unless the government is thrown, nothing will change. and throwing the government is more reliable option than causing war to the country. their army isn't strong like other countries but simply dangerous. 80% of the things we hear about North Korea is propaganda and 20% is stories from its actual citizens or leaked stuff.

I biggest fear is that there are people here in the United States that think North Korea is an ideal situation for Americans. There are those who believe that communism is like a utopia and should be introduced throughout the world. Seeing those children working on the railroad caused my eyes to water, but it also was heart wrenching to see that family get split up while trying to defect to Japan.
That is not true as many know how life is under a communist regime. North Korea is more of a dictatorship rather than communist. Vietnam and China are both communist but are nothing close to being this bad.
zero people think life in NK is ideal or a good thing. Zero. Also, communism is quite literally utopia - but anarcho-libertarian communism not NK's authoritarian tankie communism
It's not about communism, it's about the leader. North Korea is more of a private property of one family and they simply use communism as a facade to live a lavish life on the cost of lives of NK citizens. There have been and still exist, successful socialist/semi-socialist governments. And America has been interrupting in other nations' affairs to quote unquote reveal the truth about communism. The 1st video: the Korea police/ or whatever they are, actually entered Japanese territory to take the woman & child as the video states "dragged back to North Korea". So they really should have been safe/free.
Embassies aren't foreign territory that's a misconception coming from movies Embassies are protected by international diplomatic laws (Vienna agreements) that's why usually local police doesn't storm them International laws are often not respected, like in this case, Japan is also a prime example of "laws are for others not us" On top of that that's not a Japanese embassy either, that's a consulate, Japan not recognizing North Korea, there's no Japanese embassy

They all got safely to South Korea in the end. This video was shot in China outside a Japanese consulate.
