    Great video, Sir! I've restored some railroad locomotive bells over the years (my latest restoration is shown on RUclips). I wasn't aware of Flitz spray until I saw your posting. Based on your recommendation I bought a bottle for the restoration of my 1905 Knight and Thomas copper fire extinguisher. The spray worked great but after numerous applications I couldn't remove all of the tarnish. I had to resort to my electric palm grip sander for the really stubborn areas. I started with 600 grit sandpaper and worked my way down to 3,000 grit. Next I sanded it with fine grade steel wool followed by my automotive orbital polisher (Meguiar's 105 Ultra-Cut Compound). I finished the project with Flitz paste. The final result was excellent! (Oh, I used Greased Lightning cleaner for the hose... that worked great). Flitz should send you a couple of cases of their products for your video! Keep up the great work!

    I was interested in buying and restoring one of these, and I was wondering if all of them can be returned to this amazing shine and luster. Or are some too far beyond hope? And how can you tell, just looking at photos (like on ebay), if they will never be able to be shined up like yours? Thanks!

  • @Grahamsgarage1
    @Grahamsgarage1  12 лет назад

    Wow sounds like you got a great find. It should not have a clear coat to it unless someone added it to it. Did you try to polish it? If you see black comming off there is no clear coat and should shine up for you. If there is a clear coat the thing that works best is aircraft grade stripper. You can find it online for sale, just paint it on and it spould start peel off for you. Best of luck and hope you can bring it out like mine.

  • @reluttr2
    @reluttr2 9 лет назад

    If this is used on something that gets touched occasionally do you recommend a clear lacquer after buffing? Or is it easier to just rebuff with the compound periodically?
    I am making a coin bank from a old brass po box door. I dont imagine it will be touched quite as much as it was at one time, but it will be touched occasionally. XD

    I end up just pulling them off and then looking for another one that will fit it to complete the entire look. But I do have some that still dont have any on them, a work in progress. I also hit up ebay and craigslist looking as well. Good luck..

  • @Grahamsgarage1
    @Grahamsgarage1  12 лет назад

    Well first off as for the hose I say hit up flee markets, they are hard to come by. You may want to try to make up something on your own to fit it. The clanking inside is the canister thats normal, and the stuff that came out is left over chemical that happens sometimes. Thanks for checking out my video good luck.

      Thanks for checking out the video. If you want to keep it looking the same but just want to protect it from further weathering etc. I would recommend there Faucet Wax +. @Grahamsgarage1  10 лет назад

      Hi, thanks for checking out the video. Thats awsome you picked up one for $10. What I have done to loosen these up is heat up the metal so it contracts, take a small torch and run it around the area for a few seconds and then with gloves on start trying to loosen it (sometimes it takes a few times). I think this should do the trick for ya!! Thanks

    • @Grahamsgarage1
      @Grahamsgarage1  10 лет назад

      Hi Deborah, what it sounds like to me is that you may have used to much of the product. No worries, you will need some more elbow greese and a rough cloth (paper towel or terry cloth towel). Keep rubbing on the finish and you will see alot of black on your cloth. Keep polishing and flipping the cloth over until you see no black on it. Thats it, you should see it shinning up. Thanks and I hope this helps.

    • @Grahamsgarage1
      @Grahamsgarage1  4 года назад

      Hi John, I usually don't clean them out since no one looks in them. I did have one that smelled bad though in the past and I used the Brass & Copper Cleaner as seen in this video. I sprayed it in there and let it sit and then added dawn dish soap and hit it with a pressure washer. Looked better and took care of the smell. Thanks and hope this helps.

    What I do is try to drain it out if I can some how by turning upside down if there is any leaks it will come out little bt little after a few days and then I go to town cleaning it. If the chamber still looks good I usually just leave it in there since I dont have anyone that screws around with them after they are restored. I hope this helps you out but if you hear any other ideas I am all ears. Thanks

    Hey thank you for this incredibly helpful video. i have a question. i just bought a copper and brass fire extinguisher with a large gash in the side by the plaque. just wondering if it is semi-repairable or weldable or can a plumber fix it with flux or something? it does not need to be perfect but it is a 5 inch gash (looks like they did it to take it out of service) and it ruins its looks.

    My General TS-15 extinguisher had a coat of lacquer on it. Until I removed it with a stripper, there was really no chance of doing anything to the underlying brass. So if you spray this stuff on and it doesn't work this quickly, you probably need to strip the lacquer from your extinguisher first.

    Thanks for the video. Few questions for you...I just bought a First Aid vintage extinguisher but it is missing the hose. Any idea where I can find one? How do you know what year it is? Mine does not say. Also, when I pick it up there is something clanking around on the inside-what is that? Lastly (sorry so many!), the rivets on the back are kind of blown out and when I tipped it to the side, a bunch of blue stuff came out. What is that? Thanks for your help!!

    • @95ffd
      @95ffd 3 года назад

      Watch ebay, or craigslist. The older metal extinguishers had a similar hose, depending on if was a screw on hose or just clamped in place. The clanging around inside is either the small bottle, or the stopper that sat on top of it to keep the chemicals separate till it was turned upside down to cause it to expand.

    Hello! I have a fire extinguisher that expired in 1947, and it was never used so it still sounds like it has powder or something inside! How do I empty it?

    • @Grahamsgarage1
      @Grahamsgarage1  6 лет назад

      Hi Melanie, when it comes to these old ones there were many different types of chemicals used some even containing sulfuric acid (or even a capsule inside). With that said I don't want to tell you something wrong. I would recommend you reach out to your local fire extinguisher company for advice (some times they will even help empty it for you). If its a US made one usually that acid/powder has dissipated but again don't want to tell you 100%. Also if you check selling old fire extinguishers on Ebay there is some helpful hints on there, I have checked that out in the past when selling one. Thanks again and sorry I couldn't be of 100% help.
