Thank you for providing this; I spent a week in Galveston earlier this year on a relief trip with students from Boston College and can sincerely say it changed my perception, my goals, my career path...I am trying to get back as soon as I can. It is unfair and totally unacceptable that the city should still look the way it does nine months after the storm. This is America. We have the money and the man power to fix this. Galveston: you are in my thoughts and my heart, always.
My friend went through this. She had most of the tiles on her roof ripped off, three broken windows, flooding in her house, and an oak tree fell into the home, knocking a hole right in their wall. She said they're glad they evacuated and hope nothing else hits this year. They've still got water damage and stuff like that in their home. God Bless All.
Actually chilling to watch this now as an adult. I was there for all of it as a kid inside of the old car factory on 23rd across from o'connell stayed couped up in there 3 days after. I played for the riptides as a kid and remember very clearly seeing that shed ripped apart by the movie theater on s and being so sad that not only our home and everything else was destroyed but also our hopes at playing football that year.. This one thing forced alot of us that are b.o.i to grow up alot quicker then most parents would want but I would say the character we gained from it definitely shows today!
Never forget. I was down there just days after the Storm with a friend. You cannot believe the devastation until you see it first hand. Never forget...
I was sent to San Antonio the day before hurricane Ike hit land. Once it made landfall we traveled to Houston and set up at the Pasadena Fairgrounds. I remember talk radio basically suspended all programming and covered the storm 24 hours a day. People would call in and pass along information about flooding, damage, availability of certain resources, aid, people needing help and others just talking to the host about what they were experiencing at the time. There was this guy who called in and said he disregarded all the warnings to leave and even told the people going through the area warning them to leave that he was staying. He told the host his house was completely flooded and was now in the attic. He said the water was starting to rise into the attic. The host asked him alot of questions but mainly how did he plan on getting out. He asked him if he had brought any tools with him to cut through the roof so he could escape onto the roof of the house. This guy had nothing with him and no means of escape. After they talked for awhile he finally said he had to go and try and figure out what he was going to do. It was a damn spooky phone call to listen to. I felt like I was listening to the last minutes of this guys life. He was trapped and would soon drown. I always wondered what finally happened. My guess is he drown but who knows. Spending 7 days down there was exhausting. I couldn't imagine living there and having to see it through till the end.
It will take some time, but with hardwork and heart.. all will be rebuilt! My wife and I promise to weekend there a few more times a year than we already do in order to contribute back to the economy. Our minor damage here in Pearland doesnt compare. God speed Galvestonians.. you have about 5 million close neighbors rooting for you!
its been months and its almost hurricane season again....it was haunting, and like it was said earlier..it took the same path as the Great storm of 1900 it will be remembered in our grand children
mhm.. devastating... even though I went to Galveston on Thursday for thanksgiving... it was horrible. It looked like a warzone.. all the plants were just dead. I even saw a boat by this restaurant about 2 miles off the coast! Buildings were just ripped apart... and the beach is basically gone. I feel so bad for Galveston. I thank God that my grandpas house had no damage or flooding whatsoever!
I live in La Marque and did not evacuate, when I opened the door and look out our pine tree was bending almost all the way over. Scary shit. During the calm I fell asleep through the rest.
was there just one large fire everyone covered or several? haven't heard what caused these fires. sad to see houses surviving the storm only to be burnt down after. :-(
Yeap, If NO knew how to act civil and help others then appreciate the help then they wouldn't of suffer much. We got hit hard but like you said we got together and help each other and that was what really made some people feel better and a bit relief.
my family and i was very blessed we live 30 min from houston..i never got to see this because of course our electricity was out....glad i see it now and not right after thats hard to take in
engineering is what? the difference between your family and me is that they're in for the money and i'm in it to get the best possible result while still been affordable and easy to build. no excuses or ridiculous compromises. thank you for the compliment! indeed i'm a 50 year old kid. engineering is the use of materials and principles to achieve a desired result. safety , practicality, economics, are usually the main factors .
@EverythingMagic101 Yeah Tillman Fertitta had big plans for the old flagship though. He had big plans for Galveston I think too but with all the damage to the Kemah Boardwalk and the Downtown Aquarium I guess things aren't really progressing like he thought down there. A definite and long-lasting effect for that area. Bolivar still has lots of places that aren't even close to normal...It's sad, I really wish the people of Galveston speed in getting economically back on track economically!
i live near kingwood-approx. 90 miles inland-and the roof on my apartment building was ripped off. my upstairs neighbor had water damage that ran down to me, causing my sheetrock to fall in. i lost everything i worked for on my own. all 3 days after my 21st bday. just goes to show-things are only things.
I use to live there. Its totally awkward seeing so much destruction where you use to live. However, I knew the wall was going to hold. Held during the other storms. I just fear what the west of Coveview Blvd looked like because that was the end of the Seawall.
wow this is sad I was born and raised in galveston I live up in the dallas area now just to know what people went through was sad a lot of jobs loss and damage I couldn't imagine if it was the category 4 they were predicting
no it does look different. If you lived here you would know the difference. Yes.. so much has been done to help it build back up but SO much is gone too! It is very different still but being open to public and tourists is great... Galveston can & will rebuild 100%
I was there on good friday 2012. the only way you know that there was a hurracane of that magnatude are the little indacators on the buildings saying IKE water lvl.
Engineering is a balance of environmental needs & cost effectiveness. People can have whatever they pay for. The damage we suffered from Ike was electrical not structural. Lightening traveled thru our underground power lines & burned out the motherboards of much- sprinkler system, garage door opener, etc. Nice castle mote & tank in your drawing. I'm convinced you're a kid but I'll still talk w/you. Message me if you want so we don't fill up this video's comments section.
I was in Hurricane ike!!!!!!!!! (not lying) :D Luckily i survived it. My whole family survived!!!!! All there was was a big flood!!! then soon it went down
Man i went down their lyke one week b4 all this happened & they where already talkin about it on the news tellin ppl 2 leave & everybody i talked 2 said they where jus gon wait it out & shyt...Now lookin at this video...Ir's really kinda sad man cause all those ppl i talked 2 idk if their dead, alive ,or wat & the whole island is wiped out...Damn thats sum crazy shyt...
.......=[ i cant believe all this happend from that storm it was almost the exact same path od the 1900 storm its just really emotional i had a person that died there and 2 hurt.........=[ its just really really terrible wut happend there in galveston
korvelo, you aren't going to sell your pyramid house plans by insulting potential customers. Not a real bright marketing plan.Geodesic domes are the MOST weather resistant but nearly as ugly as the pyramid design. I highly doubt that either will become commonplace anytime soon.
@ibc03 i believe the word you are looking for is secede. And no, texas can not secede any more than any other state. Last time texas seceded it was forced back into the union in a little thing called the civil war. Every other southern state learned its lesson, but because texas was a nation for 10 years, somehow its different? Hawaii, vermont, and california were also nations before they joined the US, so they could secede too..but wait, they cant. (btw im a texan too)
good for you. most geodesic i know are a joke and not a real house even domes built of concrete have too thin walls and full of cracks. show me a real geodesic with several stories, garages,5000 sq feet living area and that can resist a f5 tornado or cat5 hurricane and not only the wind force but any projectile thrown at those speeds, for your info the pyramid will resist storm surge better than your geo and has living quarters 20 ft above ground. are your geos solid steel or concrete?
Well I'm Catholic and when Jesus dies on the cross, there's a big thing happens. All these natural disasters comes together! - Hurricanes - Tornadoes - Tidal Waves (Tsunamis) - Earthquakes - and Huge Explosions But they say it's so fictional but i say its true! Heh! How does it matter, huh? :D
lemme explain a little something about living on the coast. if you drive? through salt water? sell the car. i dont care how much you "hose" it off. be sure to dedicate more time and money to house repair.. and i cant prove it, but i think sea-breeze and salt air make women turn into witches.. at least thats my expirience. you see, thats a 5 to 10 foot sea wall on the beach, i know water rose 18 feet in crystal beach, imagine same here. love the coast..

I was in Galveston as one of the first EMS responders there and it deffently was quite amazing and an experiance that will always be with me.
Never forget. I was down there just days after the Storm with a friend. You cannot believe the devastation until you see it first hand. Never forget...
I've spent a lot of time in Galveston over the years and love it. I feel connected when it's in pain.
Amazing footage
I love the footage of the refueling choppers. That's some amazing stuff.

I remember hearing about the fires on the radio. Not on tv, I still had no power. I didn't get power back until 16 days after Ike hit.

Thanks for the videos. Have friends there and love Galveston. Hope it can recover. I wonder how the historic downtown fared.
Wow I grew up in Galveston and its so weird to see your hometown on tv destroyed like that.
Do you know of any specific groups still doing cleanup in New Orleans or Galveston? I want to go back.
its been months and its almost hurricane season again....it was haunting, and like it was said earlier..it took the same path as the Great storm of 1900 it will be remembered in our grand children

Thanks a lot i was able to see my house was still in one piece..
was there just one large fire everyone covered or several? haven't heard what caused these fires. sad to see houses surviving the storm only to be burnt down after. :-(
How absolutely heartbreaking...
how did some of those fires start
2nd comment! keep doing hurricain vids! I LOVE THEM
keept he good work!

engineering is the use of materials and principles to achieve a desired result. safety , practicality, economics, are usually the main factors .
I remember boarding up the house and taking my most precious items. Lost my car under 6ft of water, job under 18 ft, and my apartment under 2 ft.
RIP to the B-Room

Ike hit us and everyone in our neiborhood had branches in their drive way. But our school had some roof torn off and the fence was blown down.

just goes to show-things are only things.
I remember this, not having power for 2 weeks straight and flooding the first floor to our hotel
I've seen all of the pictures and I'm on the KHOU board, but no major news network is saying anything about Bolivar.
My house on the far West End of the island got a few feet of water underneath the house but nothing major.
I use to live there. Its totally awkward seeing so much destruction where you use to live. However, I knew the wall was going to hold. Held during the other storms. I just fear what the west of Coveview Blvd looked like because that was the end of the Seawall.
damn, it was bad in houston but it looks like galveston got hit harder.

I was born sept 8 2008
I was just one month old and I was in the hospital and going in helicopters and getting transferred and it was crazy...
I was there on good friday 2012. the only way you know that there was a hurracane of that magnatude are the little indacators on the buildings saying IKE water lvl.
Did the Hurricaine fight for it's friends?
Scary! we got a lot of rain from the storm! And a few tornados too! but not where my neighborhood is!! phew!!!
Can you all TRY to get to Bolivar Peninsula? No news channel will tell us what's happening there.
For some, the fires are a blessing. Most can't afford flood insurance along the coast.
I consider Hurricane Ike the husband of Hurricane Katrina.
that fire the house is still standing in galveston

@Avatarblackwolf Ehh, they have their own crippling bureaucracy back at home. Can't repair a house for shit without state permission.
@CodArk2 Well California was a nation for 22 days but the Texas and the other 2 i give them more leeway
korvelo, you aren't going to sell your pyramid house plans by insulting potential customers. Not a real bright marketing plan.Geodesic domes are the MOST weather resistant but nearly as ugly as the pyramid design. I highly doubt that either will become commonplace anytime soon.

i was in hurricane ike! and it was terrible. and i agree with ibc03 texas is the shit!!!!!
its not smart to live by the water ... may be beautiful but ehh... i dont even wanna live in houston
@Avatarblackwolf Totally misinformed. Your parents should be proud.
Least it's quite for yall now.
good for you.

Well I'm Catholic and when Jesus dies on the cross, there's a big thing happens.
All these natural disasters comes together!
- Hurricanes
