But thanks to these dyno vids I went with an Orion XTR 750.4 to run not just the front component sets with resister boxes but also the set in the rear passenger side figuring I at least get whats on the rating plus more. I was an Orion fan boy back in the 80s and 90s when I competed in IASCA and USAC. HCCA Orions are all I ran...12 Kicker Comp 12s on 3 HCCA 250s.
    The history of the original Reds and the legendary power they were capable of made these amps the best at that time.
    Then came the US Amps buyout of Orion. From that point on, Orion Reds haven't been able to live up to their legend.
    Original HCCAs(produced by Orion as an independent company) were awesome. THD % couldn't be touched. The original "cheater" amps.
    From the moment Orion sold-out to US Amps, with the company changing hands again and again since then, have been junk. Plain and simple.

    • @iamjackalope
      @iamjackalope Год назад +3

      The new ones are good. But yea I know what you are saying. The last ORION amp I ran was an XTR PRO 2400 that I removed from my Ford Exploder before I got rid of it a few months back. It's a great amp. I still have it but I won't be using it again. I'm putting together a system for my Toyota Tundra Crewmax at the moment and won't be needing that much power and I'm unwilling to lose the space housing that big of an amp and today there are better more officiant designs that won't tax the charging system like these old amps did. I'm giving these new Down4Sound amps a try. They look promising. Hopefully they pan out. This will be my first non ORION system that I have put together for myself since the early 90's.

    • @wal

      US Amps bought Orion? I knew about DEI, but never heard US Amps had anything to do with Orion? 💁‍♂️

    • @iamjackalope
      @iamjackalope Год назад +1

      @@wal Not US Amps. DEI correct. Who owns ORION now a days? Do you know? They are certainly offering some very high wattage amplifiers. They need to start publishing the correct specs for their amps though. It doesn't really matter that the amps do a thousand watts over rated power or a thousand watts under rated power because in both cases they don't meet their published specs. They should be +/- 10% of the published specs.
      Question for you. Have you ever put the XTR PRO 2400 on the dyno before and if not would you like to? I had this amp in my last ride, a 1996 Ford Exploder that I was driving from about 2002 till a few months ago when I got rid of it. It was pushing 3 12 " kicker Solobarics and they walloped pretty hard but I never really had the charging system in that car to really push that amp to it's fullest and wouldn't mind finding out what it's true capabilities are. So I could make it available to you for testing if you like. It's a great amplifier and it's still in great shape. Seeing how it has been in constant use for all of these years the electrolytic capacitors in the amp are still good. It's usually when they sit for long periods of time with no charge that they start to go bad.
      Let me know if your interested and we can make arrangements to get the amp to you.

    • @knowplay3258
      @knowplay3258 Год назад

      @Williston Audio Labs I may be mistaken and thinking of the DEI buyout when DEI acquired Orion, a/d/s, and PPI. My memory isn't what it used to be at my age. But, it was my understanding the US Amps purchased Orion and a/d/s in the early mid-90s which they kept for close to two years before selling Orion to DEI. Then DEI kept Orion until around 2003-2004(not sure of the exact date) when DEI decided to focus more on car audio/security accessories thus selling Orion to MD Audio out of South America(current owner of Orion) which has Zennon out of South Korea manufacturing the Orion amp line for them.
      Either way, Orion stopped being the fabled legend it was when the company sold. The HCCA line lost it's "magic" as the "cheater" amp of choice for competition at that point. I do know Orion competition in the "cheater" amp market had got pretty intense prior to that with such products as the Phoenix Gold MPS and MS lines(MS275 was a beast!!), Hi-Fonics Ulysses rated at 25x2, several similar offerings from US Amps, the MTX MTA 225(PPI ProMos in a MTX case), the Kicker si line, and the venerable offerings from PPI like the ProMos 50. PPI really rose to legend status when Alma Gates and "THE Bronco" entered the scene. Needless to say, at that time, Orion HCCA Amps lost some of their mystery and alot of their dominance in the competition scene thus seeing sales drop and forcing the sale of the company.
      I will always love my Reds. I'm old and they will always be the best in my eyes. Us old school guys will always love our legends of 80s and 90s car audio and we still prefer to use such equipment in our personal systems. Kids and young adults don't know of or aren't familiar with the unique and innovative equipment that built the foundation for the car audio scene today.

    • @knowplay3258
      @knowplay3258 Год назад

      Me being old and today being a day alot of people remember better times when we were young, I started thinking of events and/or the introduction of new, innovative gear that really changed the comp scene at the time. The mid 80s that saw Orion HCCA 225 enter the scene to challenge the dominance of the Linear Power 452 and 952 had on the lower wattage classes. When the Cerwin Vega Stroker subwoofers hit the scene to challenge the likes of Savard, M&M Godfather, Kicker Comp, and the few others dominating competitions. The appearance of the Image Dynamics Grand National at competitions showing that SQ could usurp SPL as the crowd pleaser and head turner. When Mark Fukuda showed that an innovative use of a car alarm 10key remote, tiny electric motors, and alot of daisy-chained Audio Control gear could allow you to dominate SQ AND SPL. When a few guys from South Louisiana showed you could dominate SPL against systems with multiple 12s, 15s, or 18s with only 3 10s on a HCCA 225 in the rear of a Honda CRX using the CRX's unique shape as a giant resonating horn. When Pioneer introduced the IMPP woofer that broke many SPL records at the time. When Kicker introduced the Solobaric line of woofers that literally killed any competition. Phoenix Gold was introduced to the world showing that amplifiers could push multiple woofers of larger cone space at low ohm loads(half ohm or lower) making extreme amounts of wattage beyond their 4 ohm stereo rating doing it stabily and reliably for extended periods of time that not even the Orion HCCAs or similar could touch. Brantley Waites showing you could install a portable, pre-built system in a rental van in less than 24 hours to win dB Drag Racing competitions. Then when Alma Gates, PPI, and a 1990 Ford Bronco showed the world that Xmax meant nothing by becoming the loudest man-made object on Earth using FLAT PISTON PPI 10s when the Bronco broke the 180db barrier with a 181.7db surpassing the launching of the space shuttle for SPL.
      These are some of the points in car audio history I was present for and that will always remain parts of the Golden Era" of car audio competitions in my eyes.

      Pop Top Series were programmable crossovers on small removable circuit boards. Originally designed for the installer to “program” the amps so that the end user has less controls to fiddle with and mess up. Unfortunately it proved to be more troublesome than it was worth, especially for the next owner of the amplifier. When I worked at ORION in the early 2000’s , I estimate 10% of all of my tech calls were about how to program the “pop top” X-Over series. In todays times, the best option is the bypass card if you can find them and use an outboard DSP or analog crossover.

    Interesting how big the jump was to dynamic on this one. Seems like they usually only pick up a couple hundred watts at most.
    I also wonder if the amps are rated for higher voltages. If you run the same amp at 16 or 18 volts does it go into a protect or just make more power?

      It can handle 16V, but I did not test that high

    I think they are different colors because the heat sink is anodized and the end plates are painted.

    All these latest “Orion” amps are Orion in name only…these are shells of what they used to be.

      ive owned several....there built to UHC (ultra high current).. rated 0.5 ohm, but ran on 0.25 ohm...required great fat wire and at least 2 car batteries...were monsters....i think i remember they pushed 50 volts at around 100 ampere into woofer!! they pushed superhard subs excursion. prolly around 2000 wRMS
