So as a former Disneyland CM, I can say that the issue is is multifaceted. Four years ago, Disneyland Cast Members were making $15.50 per hour to start when negotiations started. Around the same time, the McDonald's across the street on Harbor Blvd put out a banner out front that advertised $17 to start. Getting a second job as a CM is nearly impossible, as work hours widely varied and giving shifts away was limited to a small number per year, resulting in a good number of Cast Members living far below the poverty line with a number of them reportedly living out of their cars. Meanwhile, prices backstage for CM cafeterias and snacks have skyrocketed, leaving many additional cast members in a state of food instability. After a long negotiation period, a strike vote was taken and struck down when Disney's best counter - $17.50 to start as opposed to the $20 that had been asked for - was given with the threat that if a strike was unsuccessful, the offer would be rescinded and the pay rate would remain at $15.50. While the starting rate was raised to $17.50, those Cast Members who were receiving more following years of service were left without raises, or a raise of a few cents, causing morale to drop even lower.
While Disney continued to claim that there wasn't money in the budget to afford such a raise, they also argued that complimentary admission and sign-in privileges, along with discounts at the Disney hotels (which are far outside of affordability with the discount) were generous ways to make up for the difference in pay. Meanwhile, the week the vote was taken was also the week that Disney started rolling out Genie+, and we visibly saw thousands of people paying the additional $20+ per person for lightning lane access. In addition, ticket prices were also raised along with other costs around the park. But yeah, there wasn't money in the budget to afford it, let alone money in the budget to allow for regular disinfecting of the breakrooms despite the high spread of Omicron amongst the frontline CMs.
Meanwhile, attendance policies were tightened, and many CMs were laid off when they were unable to get the time off they needed as points were given for any abscence, no matter the reason. This is where safety comes in. Cast Members, afraid of losing their income, began coming to work with Covid - exposing others, including myself - who lives with a highly compromised immune system. Turnover became rapid, and long time cast members began to quit or were let go with the attendance policy changes. This hightened turnover ends up leading to less experience and more accidents -- something that we saw with deadly results in the 90's under Paul Pressler.
This contract is vital to turning morale around in the Parks, and seeing the Company begin to value its Cast Members again. Doing so is the only way for the magic to return, because right now the morale is at an all-time low. And I know -- I was around in the Paul Pressler days.
At a time when the Company is promising $1.9 Billion for an expansion, Bob Iger is apparently paid enough to publicly buy a soccer team, and other major theme parks and resort area workers being paid more, front line Cast Members need to be treated with respect and acknowledgement for the work they do -- and at the moment, that is what's at stake with this vote.

For all those that have never worked and lived in Southern California; it’s VERY COMMON for people to drive AT LEAST and hour or two (sometimes more), to work every single day of the week. There’s a lot of people who work in the larger city of Los Angeles, and actually live a good hour or two away. People commuting insane distances and times is not out of the ordinary. THUS, if they’re going to be compensating all those people for commuting etc? THAT ALONE, could easily be tons and tons of money. It’s a much bigger deal than it sounds.

My son worked at Disneyland as a lead in merchandising and he said he would have to go through several lands in the park always but always clocking in and out at the mainstreet Arcade closest to entering the park. The cast members clocked in at their work station, not when they entered the park.

Is it worth it at 2 hours of commuting one way? What's the pay?

    • @fourlittlebirds6166
      @fourlittlebirds6166 21 день назад +1

@@poulinhp can’t speak for anyone’s individual pay within the Disney company, but I’ve had several friends within the movie industry, (set design and construction, key grips etc) and they make several hundreds of thousands a year. Six figure jobs are also common place in LA. These friends would drive an hour to two to work and live in a family friendly bedroom community because of the safety and the school districts. Housing varied depending on the neighborhood you wanted to be in, but it’s always been MUCH more expensive than other places in the country (other than Manhattan, Miami, Palm Beach etc. ) So a small 1,200-1,400 sq ft house can sell for well over $600,000k. If you want a piece of land and more square footage in a good neighborhood you’re looking at a 2M house easily. I’ve had family members who work for one city, and drive three hours home to another. When you live there, everyone measures distance by time it takes to commute, not by the actual distance on a map. The freeways are screwed up. Too many people all trying to go in the same directions all the time. That and insane politics, laws, and taxes, add to the stress.

@@SumDumGy that’s true. However it still doesn’t change that most people live that way. From personal experience, if a person doesn’t want to live that way, the best solution is to move. Add that up to everything else wrong with the state currently, and quite a lot of people choose to move out of state simply so they don’t have to make those kinds of crazy commutes.

Maybe Disneycorp should try producing a desirable product line, thereby increasing income so they can hire more cast members at a better wage and maintain the physical property in top condition, maybe even upgrade existing attractions in a timely fashion so guests don't show up on a weekend when six major draws are yellow-taped.... There was some racism involved, but a lot of it is overblown because people have no ability to take into account the mindset of the majority of the population at the time. He actually advocated for James Baskett to get his Lifetime Achievement Academy Award for Song of the South, despite the fact the academy was too racist to let him go and accept it (why even give it to him? That's my question however). Regardless, ya he was as 'racist' as someone's 90-year-old grandfather that just knew the world before it became what it is. So… incidentally, you can find Dole whips also in the universal theme parks and other places. (Not sure where in Universal Hollywood) but in Orlando they’re in one of the stands next to the “Me ship Olive” in Toon Lagoon.

I actually have skin in this game and I hate the fact that the front line Parks & Resorts cast are the ones being hosed. But it isn't surprising.
Who deserves perks and goodies taken away are the "creatives" in the entertainment division. Executives, showrunners, writers and others fail consistently with their PC/DIE nonsense. Whether it's diminishing views and interest in Disney+ content or the fact that they've made 2 movies that made a profit in the last 18 months. Two.
Parks & Resorts have largely propped up the company since c0vid with their profits. I'll also single out the creative teams associated with P&R for their consistent failures. Should the folks behind the underwhelming Galaxy's Edge projects and now-closed Galactic Starcruiser be getting raises? Or for the disastrous and bland Splash Mountain/Tiana reskins? I don't think so.

Nobody "lets" a business take advantage of them; they know you have to eat and pay bills and it takes time to find another job...so companies abuse, bully, overwork and under-pay employees as SOP. Their employees have to adhere to very strict rules, a lot of them have specialized skills and extensive training and guests expect cast members to be perfect in all interactions, and magical. Then when employees try to get some relief by organizing, the company uses good will (that only exists because of the employees) demonizes them and gets the public on their side...it's clearly worked on you!

I mean communist is when the government dictate what is everyones salary, it's when the CEO earns the same as his driver.
As I see it uniuns are the most capitalist thing, it's an organization that maximize the negotiation power of the union members to get a better worth for the goods they sell (their work).
What is the difference between this and buyers union, or any trade union? It's all about demand and supply after all.

The strike is about "safety"?! No no no, definitely not.
As somebody who had no choice but to work for the Mouse for two miserable decades before become one of the many Igor "earmarked for deletion" last year, as he had bragged to the press, I can most definitely assure you that "safety" is not first and foremost what's on Disney employees' minds, and that anyone who tells you otherwise is either severely misinformed or believing what the Mouse themselves want the public to believe, and it's no laughing matter, especially when it comes to Walt's legacy.
As an animator and character designer who was down on his luck during the recession, I was one of the many who was forced to work for Disney all those years ago simply because - like many of the original animators back in the Great Depression - we had nowhere else to go. I had to do it against my better judgement, as I knew all too well all the horror stories regarding working for modern Disney for ages, especially from friends who had worked for them in various departments. I tried my best to put on a happy face about it, hoping that maybe it would be better than what I had heard. But after a year's period of time, it was clear that modern Disney was far, far worse than even all the warnings I had ever heard.
Now, all unions are corrupt by nature. You're automatically union, unfortunately, the moment you're hired for Disneyland. And you're caught between two evils duking it out with you caught in the center and receiving the abuse from both.
First and foremost, you learn within a year or so that in all departments of the company that there's only one bottom line with modern Disney:
It doesn't matter how good a job you do.
It doesn't matter how much you want to please management.
It doesn't matter how much you follow the rules.
It doesn't even matter how much your work entertains and delights others, much less how many compliments they give you.
The one and only bottom line Disney follows is, "Has this person been working for us longer than six months". The moment the answer is "yes", then you are automatically earmarked for firing.
They will literally chase you all around the floor looking for any excuse to try to yank you into the office, any lie at all, to try to get you into enough trouble to fire you. And the unions are pathetic in their attempts to "defend" you; it's all about them, not you.
Disney will look for every excuse in the world to deliberately pay everyone below the legal minimum wage, and they always get away it because of their powerful clout. Many of my friends were living in their cars, none of us could afford such things as going to the dentist, and everyone I knew including myself were heavily dependant on food banks and local churches to help put any food on the table at all.
The worst of the abuse is directly aimed at people who had been with the companies for years, and Disney has openly admitted they specifically now target conversatives for firing, especially Christians. They want everyone with a sense of traditional morals "weeded out", as they put it, from the company. They only want others exactly like themselves, the ruling majority being aggressively anti-conservative.
    It was hell. Sheer hell.
Word had managed to reach them that I myself was a Christian, and from the stunts they kept pulling on me alone I had never felt so harassed on a job in my entire life, and I've been working jobs since the early eighties.
Worse, other companies are reluctant to hire you when you have Disney on your resume because the local stereotype is that Disney workers are stupid and braindead. I couldn't find work anywhere else no matter how hard I tried, and neither could any of my friends except one who lucked out.
Even worse, early last year Disney completely revamped their attendance system to make it far, far easier to trip CMs to and get them fired, by admission. This on top of the many childish stunts they have attempted trying to pull on staff trying to trip them up, such as the time they deliberately changed all the clocks in the company area I worked in to be completely different from one another, including the punch in/out computers, hoping the workers would accidentally punch out wrong and give them an excuse to haul them into the office.
And now, the unions want to strike, and that was everyone's worst nightmare they hoped never to see. Disney unions at, say, Disneyland will *not* pay you to strike. You're on your own without income. And the friends I have who are still there are all scared to death.
A longtime friend of mine older than myself, who is supposed to retire next year, called me up the day she learned of the strike vote, one of their best workers whom they've targeted for years, and she is absolutely hysterical with fear. If they strike and she participates, she will lose her home and be out on the street as she has literally no family, no living relatives to help her. But on the other, if she crosses the picket line, as all of my friends there plan to do should the strike happen, well I'm sure we all know how unions act towards union members who cross the picket lines no matter how desperately they need to keep working.
So that's just a small portion of the nightmare of working for the Mouse; I could fill a book with it. The things that Disney bends over backwards to make sure the press won't report. The things that would have Walt appalled if he were alive today. Walt could be gruff, but of course he was never like this.
Modern Disney is exactly what Walt feared his company would turn into after his passing. And it is a living hell.
