Many many thanks to both of you. I landed upon this video completely by chance (was looking for Prius inverter related videos), and I am thrilled that I did. The final bit where you put all the components together, and talked us through how MG1 and MG2 synchronize and drive the wheels either via battery power or via IC engine power was fantastic as well. I have always believed that opening up a machine is the best way to gauge quality, I think I now consider myself better informed about Toyota's hybrid drive systems thanks to this video.
Great video guys. There are a lot of so-called auto enthusiasts out there who have, for some insane reason, convinced themselves that hybrids are impossibly complex, unserviceable, frail, an affront to god, a harbinger of the apocalypse, etc. I wish I could force them all to watch your video, because from a maintenance standpoint, this is no more complicated than a conventional hydraulic automatic transmission - and as you guys mention, the Toyota HSD power-split drive is practically bulletproof. I've been in Camry Hybrid NYC taxis with 400k+ miles on them. They're incredibly durable cars.
+doctor zaius It looks SIMPLER than a conventional hydraulic automatic transmission - at least mechanically. I'm wondering about the computer control box which reads the 2 shaft speed sensors and decides when to start the engine, how much juice to give to M2 to control its speed, etc.
+Theodore Zuckerman It is. As a gearhead and embedded systems engineer, I see this video and want to go pillage priuses for fun brushless DC motor parts at the junkyard. I guess I might do that Sunday, actually... Anyone know if the motor-generators are bathed in transmission fluid, coolant, or neither? I'm guessing ATF or air since I see no coolant deposits, but I couldn't tell for sure.
this video is very useful, I wish you success always and don't get bored to share your knowledge with the world, greetings from automotive from Indonesia

IF you are going to work on cast aluminum on the ground, lay something soft down before placing a mating surface face down. Cast aluminum gouges and scrapes easily and mating surfaces are machined. Please do not do what they did and place it directly on concrete if you run into a corroded bolt and accidently turn the whole thing you could destroy the surface causing premature failure of parts and or leaks.
Yes, great video. I really enjoyed watching this as an owner of a Lexus RX400h with basically the exact same HSD system. A few pieces of advice to go along with what Mishale said though. I definitely agree with her about the gearbox 100% but another thing. The metal tools as well should not be used on any machined mating surfaces, especially soft aluminum. No metal hammers to pop out gears either. They make hard plastic wedges and special plastic tools for that, plastic hammers to bang on the wedges and gears.
@ 15:30 another reason why it doesnt run is because its "poling" without the rear bearing being located and the air gap being small, the rotor is being pulled by the magnetic field over to the stator
yes , it's just good work habit to always do things properly even if it is broken. remember bad habits are easy to form while good habits hard to achieve. yes I'm guilty of typical guy thing too sometimes when I really want something done yesterday.

Thanks!, Jason the Tech in the Video let me know they go through extensive training on how to open these, we had the phone book sized manual sitting on the desk next to us. But being that we did not plan to put it together again, and that it was damaged in a wreck, we did the typical 'guy' thing and skipped the manual :)

So did you replace the bearing that had a gritty sound? If so did it fix the issue? I noticed something almost immediately after you split the cases, the "Chain" from the trans-axle to the final drive assembly was solid as a board! Drive chains are supposed to be loose and freely movable. Gen 2 used "Chain" drive, Gen 3 went to "Gear" drive. I bet that's why Toyota changed that design. From all the over comments doesn't look like anyone else noticed.

Great Video, Thanks for posting! One question I have about the transmission's operation that I just can't wrap my head around, is - Is there any kind of physical or mechanical brake on the rotation of the MG1 (the smaller one)? That power split device looks very much like an open diff. It seems like there's a lot of opportunity for power to spill out the back of the transmission (thru MG1) when the ICE and the main motor MG2 are turning at full torque, much like when you lift one wheel of an open differential off the ground and that unloaded wheel spins up uncontrollably. How do they stop that?
+64davrecon I'm honestly not sure, but you can use a brushless motor as somewhat of a brake - you just shunt the windings all to ground and it becomes an eddy current brake, effectively. It won't completely stop the shaft, there will be some slippage, but it will bring it nearly to a halt, which is good enough in this case. If you want peak efficiency you could even put that power into charging the battery to apply reaction force to the MG1 rotor instead of just shunting it to ground.
Hello guys. Thanks a lot for this video. Please do you have a tear down video of the 3rd generation gearbox? I bought a brand new Prius 3rd gen. from the US and shipped to Nigeria where I live. It started rattling almost from the very beginning. Initially I thought some objects had fallen into the fans but after a careful check I found nothing outside. Prius is not sold in Nigeria and I didn't want it completely damaged by quacks. I strongly suspect something wrong with the transaxle . I am a mechanic. I have checked inside the engine with a borescope and found nothing. I have changed the IGR and also chucked the intake manifold; both are pristine clean as the vehicle has done only 17000 miles in all. The car has been grounded for a year as the rattling got out of control and the Check Hybrid System won't let it engage the drive or neutral. It quakes heavily on starting and practically shuts down immediately with a warning to check hybrid system. Please I appreciate any advice. I couldn't get the service manual to buy.
Very confused. You should be able to get a manual. Not like a Tesla. These are much more complicated than a Tesla. But Tesla have problems with other people fixing their cars. Hi Guys, Great Vid! I have a question about how the ATF gets into and all over the internal parts: I did not see any seals to contain the ATF in the gears so I am assuming it goes all over the place in the trans too. So does the ATF get all over the electric parts too? And doesnt that make a bit of a electrical shorting hazard as the ATF gets old/carries metal dust and breaks down? I also suspect that high freq high voltage would have little problem finding an electrical path through the ATF, especially when it is full of metal dust from the gears wearing over time. Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

Thank You for this great video! Very nice job explaining the components. I have a question that I hope you either have knowledge of or can obtain. Can you tell me what the Kwh is of MG1 and what is the output current of MG1 when it is in regen mode? I realize that the power MG1 is generating is 3 phase which must be changed to DC to recharge the batteries. Just curious what Volts, Amperage is produced directly by MG1 if in fact it is similar to or greater than a standard alternator prior to being rectified. My guess is that MG1 produces more power output than a standard alternator.
I am not worried about the electrons -- I want to see you put the whole dam thing back together - Can't you fix that burned winding ?? The wire is cheap ?
you seem to be pretty good at this electric mechanics ,I would like to know why the total electric car systems do no self charge , like putting some kind of system attached to the wheel where there is already motion and to recharge the system in a totally electric system to keep the batterys charged without plugging them into a outside source to charge . any ideas on this at all ,
Because of the conservation of energy and law of entropy. Energy lost in traction and frictions cannot be recovered completely ( it can be but not in these times ! ). you can probably buy a cheap VFD (variable frequency drive) on ebay that will directly drive that motor off of 120V or 220V and allow varying power and speed
29:55 - How about using AC Volts range on that multimeter? It'd be interesting to see how many Volts a hand-spin would produce. You must be driving a 2nd gen or earlier. My 2010 is beautiful. I love this car.
using a VFD (Variable frequency drive) $150 new ebay 1.5-2 kw .5 - 400 hz would allow a gradual ramp up in speed for testing with no load a 30 - 50 kw VFD would allow the motor to used to full power (disable power split planet gears, speed encoder, 300v to dc bus in VFD for a pure electric prius
It looks like it might have been easier if you guys put it on a midsize table or use electrical or air tools when
I changed my engine and now I couldn't get the engine to even run. It sound like it try to crank but doesn't move. The trans oil was very very law. Does that mean it was the problem and is the trans still good or bad. By the way the car move and drive. I mean inside the garage. What could be the problem.
i have a 2004 Prius i recently changed the mechanical pump on it , now the car will not start i thought it might have been the 12 volt batter but no joy , ugh i need some advise
Marvelous 👌👌👌👌👌
How much would it cost to replace this at a dealership.....roughly???
cool. do you have a by idea what changed between this and threw newest one in the 2016/17?
My prius don't go into the mg2 gear it kicks out. No power. Do you think it's the transmission?
would it help to run couple ounces high quality additive like archoil to the fluid?
Think I figured out where my transmission failed. Somewhere between the chain and planetary gearset, seeing how it can't move or charge and makes a grind. That or a bearing went and dislodged or grenaded that main set between the motors
great vid bro! very informative
