"I've learned a lot from my friend Lauren" actually , we all have been learning a lot with her and also with you , hope for more 😁🇬🇧🇺🇸
True
I had a fun time pronouncing these station names even if I struggled a bit with some! 😆 Hope to visit the UK sometime soon so I can actually go to some of these stations! -Christina 🇺🇸
You're so good and I love you and Lauren xo
You guys are the best , loved the video , hope for more
You did pretty great at pronuncing these British Words.
I'm pretty sure you would have done a better job in French
Hi Christina since I’ve started watching those videos & you have improved a lot in British English & same with Lauren in American English. That’s coming from me a Welsh/British person. When you come here London has best public transport followed by Manchester,Liverpool,Glasgow,Leeds,Edinburgh then Cardiff. Areas I haven’t named have a decent service unless your in middle of nowhere.
I'd say you did a pretty good job. I mispronounced Marylebone "mairel-bone" (IPA: /mer-l-bōn/) because I figured the "e" was silent.
A few things to add/correct from what Lauren said:
- the Tube still mostly does not have AC as it would not be needed given the UK weather, yet new(er) trains/lines do have it or at least have a better ventilation system.
- The Tube haswifi since a few years, you need to check with your mobile phone provider for access (for some, it can be even already included in your bill/access).
- Picadilly Circus is still a mess, it is a joint but also a very touristy place as it is literally in the middle of the city, so... yeah, take your time when you get there.
- in the video, there is also a line that actuallt links the city and Heathrow airport that is the brand new Elizabeth Line. This has AC, is pretty spacious, very quick, so getting to the airport now should be easier.
The aircon thing is actually because they're having to invent a whole new kind of aircon to cool the deep level lines. Traditional aircon would actually heat up the tube rather than cool it down (I think it's something to do with needing somewhere for the heat to go).
Whilst we don't typically need aircon above ground, the deep level tube lines at rush hour in the height of summer are a whole other ball game! Even in winter they can get too hot when it's busy.
Other cities don't have these issues because their infrastructure is much newer and usually not as deep underground making them easier to cool effectively.
@@hannahk1306 exactly, this is why the whole AC situation is a bit more complicated 😅 as a londoner, i know exactly what you are talking about
I like how Christina struggled with these words while Lauren was just like "haha , my girl needs me to learn more" and by the way I also struggled with many of these words , either the sound , accent or words themselves
Having been to London a few times, hearing Londoners say certain places definitely helps. For Tube specifically, watching videos from RUclips creators like Geoff Marshall & Jago Hazzard will help a long way in getting used to the Tube.
The line that goes to Heathrow is the Piccadilly Line (dark blue). Piccadilly Circus is always busy as it’s how we get to Regent Street and Leicester Square for more shops! Plus it goes to the Heathrow airport so a lot of people will have luggage, which is not fun.
Our underground system is not that confusing when you get used to it. Manoeuvring through some of our bigger stations on the other hand …. Especially the adjoining ones. Bank / Monument comes to mind….
I was extremely proud of Christina in this video! How do you think she did? Any station names you guys think are interesting? Also now discovered that Vauxhall cars were founded in Vauxhall!
Marleybone was epic. I grew up learning British Enlish in school, so I've heard them before. Even in the 80s a Swedish artist had a song called Picadelly Circus, in Eurovision.
Hi! Great video! Two months ago, I was in London and went to Euston station, because i was planning to go to Manchester, but It was really expensive! Like 100 pounds two ways. Is there a tip to get a cheaper ticket or is that the usual price?
I doubt I would have done better than Christina. Fun Pronunciation topic.
I bet you would mess up our French language
We French really pronunce "R" 🇫🇷
Also, in Russia, train stations are called vokzal after Vauxhall in London, which itself is a corruption of Fox Hall (apparantly because they'd named some gardens in St Petersburg after it and then the first train track in Russia happened to be there and it stuck as a generic name). Marylebone comes from Marybourne as in the bourne/burn/stream of St Mary's Church.
@@jorgequintanillaalpizar8585 for cheaper tickets you need to by in advance. Preferably at least a month. The catch is the tickets are non refundable and you have to ride the train at the time you paid for. If not (and you’re caught) it’s a full price ticket or twice the fare to the next station - whichever if greater
Vauxhall the car brand is only Vauxhall in the UK (I believe nowhere else) its Opel in most of the rest of the world, Buick in North America and China, and Holden in Australia
That's because it was a domestic British car manufacturer that was bought out by the German Opel car company at some point in the past. Haven't got a clue how it's related to the US car makers though, probably another buyout / merger.
@@JohnMacbeth As far as I know, Opel belonged to GM until 2010 or so
@@JohnMacbeth Nobody's said it yet. The car brand was made in Vauxhall, hence why it's called Vauxhall. Just like how if there was a car brand made in Liverpool it would be called Scouser
Most of these were pretty easy. I would have included Ruislip, Lewisham, Greenwich, Woolwich. Also the tube does have wifi and they're trialling mobile signal on the eastern section of the Jubilee line.
Theydon Bois?
Americans have greenwich as a district in NYC, they pronounce it same way as the Brits
Oh yeah in my first few weeks in London, literally every Londoner would correct me with the Lewisham, Greenwich and Woolwich. Although I have no idea about Ruislip, I vaguely remember reading it but not pronouncing it purely for my unfathomable fear to make a mistake again 😂
Don't forget Southwark (the most difficult for me) and Bow
The London Underground
I love seeing Lauren and Christina together
Oh, Vauxhall... in Germany, we pronounce that "Opel" 😁
Warum? 😮
Other ones I had to learn to pronounce properly when I moved back to London as an adult: Southwark, Greenwich, Bow, and Ruislip.
I miss christina and lauren, finally!!!
I would love to have Lauren give me a tour of London, and all the interesting tube stops.
She's not from London though and indicates that she's never lived there. Better to have a local.
loved this! love this duo! this was fun
Love Christina’s actions/body language in full British mode!!
Marylebone was called Great Central from 1907 to 1917. That was much easier, I think.
They make the best combo!
I feel as though everyone in the Uk went “oh really?” When she said “picadily pub” and then the moment she said “French onion soup” everyone went “oh for fucks sake!”
OK, no problem girls , I can speak on my mind the "Hello - I'm Christina from the US 🇺🇸 - Hi , I'm Lauren from the UK 🇬🇧" , 'cause I'm already used to this introduction 😂😂
I’m guessing they are so popular on this channel now that they no longer need an intro
@@luvmusicutb dang right these two are the channel lol
I absolutely LOVEEE lauren and christina together in videos❤
Enjoyed this video, seeing people trying to pronounce London Underground stations and wondering what line goes where whilst I did a 7h 30 challenge around it, dashing between corridors using station memory!
It is not just foreigners who get English place names wrong! I am a native and visited the small town of Bicester. I got a mild scolding from the locals for saying it as its written Bi-cester. it is quite amazingly pronounced Bis-ter!! I am from Gtr.Manchester and a lot of people not from, or familiar with, the area pronounce Salford as, SAL-ford, when it is more like the SAL in Salt. Countless wonderful linguistic surprises around our wonderful island!
Up next,Welsh town names!😆😆😆
a/c is still not common, neither the trains nor the stations, but there's wifi for quite some time already. but only for those who have uk mobile provider, so you need to register beforehand
Love to see Christina and Lauren, just like the old days!
This channel is amazing
I've been to London a couple of times. Flew in / out of Heathrow and Gatwick. Never took the tube to either one of them. I remember the "Gatwick Express" From Victoria to LGW
Half of these are common in the US .
Piccadilly circus is about as well known around the world as times square.
The easest way to teach someone how to pronounce the ham at the end of words is to just say the H is silent. It's a lot easier.
I feel like the pronutation on British is sometimes more similar to Spanish, so for a person who is learning English would be easier to learn that, cause the vowels are read similar and the H and the most diferent is the R with no sound, but I think is easier, idk what do you think?
I think French people master this R because it's so gentle and H is silent, i think that is why IT leads you to Spanish. Also these names could origin from French
I'm native Spanish... IS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND BRITISH 😭😭
Really
I'm trying to learn British... But is so hard to understand
Maybe because is more common hear American pronunciation... Idn.. but for me... IS SO HARD UNDERSTAND BRITISH 😢
@@Ruth_vf yeaa! The Other day I was watching a movie on British and I didn't understanding anything at all 😅😂 I just Say pronounciation is easy but, understanding is so difficult
@@leonortoro4822 yeaaah xd
0:55 - actually, it's even more than that.
Look for the video called "The INCREDIBLE frequency of the London Underground Victoria Line!" (I don't want to post the link, because RUclips tends to delete comments with links).
But I will describe the basic idea.
The video starts at Green Park, with a train waiting at the platform, with people entering and exiting.
0:12 - Doors close
0:16 - Train starts accelerating
0:45 - The next train arrives at the platform (i.e. the front of the train has entered the station area, not that the train has completely stopped)
1:02 - The train finally stops
1:03 - Doors open
On average, the service at its fastest, is roughly every 1 - 2 minutes, or close to 30 trains every hour.
Chris and lauren, should do a new fun, they together trying to guess german, dutch, frisian, luxemburgish, swedish, danish, norwegian, icelandic, faroese words and slangs. English speakers are germanic speakers and should have understand his own with no previous study...let's goooo doooo iiittt!!!🎶🎶🎶🎶🍨🍮🍸🥂
Euston is *one* of the main railway stations, but there are quite a few going out of London depending on your destination
well we have a Piccadily Cafe here in Kuala Lumpur! 🤣
Good job Christina! I wouldn't have done too much better, I only recognise a couple from the Monopoly board game haha! Good video, reminds me of the video when Christina tried to pronounce British towns.
Baby give me a boohh oooh ooooh🤣
Hello to everybody. I'm from Tajikistan. Lauren, Christina I love you very much. U r perfect 😍
When attempting British pronunciations, I'm always thinking how Ron Weasley would say it, so I end up starting everything with "bloody".
I used to have nightmares about getting lost in London tube lol, n I still struggle to pronounce Marylebone 😝
I used to pronounce it as maril-bone
The best duo ever 🔥🥰
There's a giant Primark with a *whole* section dedicated to Harry Potter merch at Tottenham Court Road!!!! It's also now more easily accessible because it's on the new Elizabeth Line.
I don't know why i love american girl Like her 😘😘😘😘
In the city of Toronto Canada where I live there is a small community called Kensington Market
Hah that's realy fanny.this Chanel helping me to impruv me listening skils.
Correction:
It's Holborn, not Holbone.
2023, still no signal or A/C in the tube (except the newest lines like Jubilee and Elizabeth Line)
Christina is learning from Lauren, I'm learning about American accents from Christina 😂 and double checking my english as a British girl😂
First! Hi Christina🔥🔥🔥 and Lauren!🔥
love this but Holborn as in the London tube station? Most would pronounce that "Ho-burn" unless you mean a different place!
I'm here for hear their hellooo
These two are the best duo on the channel
When you're watching this video because Christina's on it😄
Some of these I knew from Shakespeare. Jeepers! That says sometime, eh?
No Ruislip? That's the one that always gets everyone who never heard it before.
She should know Tottenham but in Massachusetts we have Wenham which has a ham pronounced like Tottenham (“Wennum”) but also have a Framingham which for some reason is pronounced framing HAM with a much stronger emphasis on the ham part.
This video shows how English pronunciation is anything but intuitive xD
I think Holbone doesn't exist, it's Holborn 😂
And the ones I usually struggled with were Woolwich, Greenwich and Lewisham. I also had said Reading wrong with an embarrassing joke about wanting to take books to read there but it's pronounced as 'red-ing' 😅
Lauren look like Dakota Fanning 🥰
Glad to see these queens back
Yayy Lauren and Christina are back and cuter then ever 🥰
they called marylebon station after st. mary le bon
le bon in old english means "by the river" .
I think all us Brits are divided on how to pronounce Marylebone 😅😅
Central line was always really crowded, whenever I went to London. But especially in the summer. We were standing like sardines in there. Luckily I was a child back then, so I had an easier time squeezing between ppl in order to get off. But yeah, not a fun experience. Out of all the metro systems of the cities I've been too, London's was by far the most crowded. But that's kinda to be expected, since London has so many millions of people.
Definitively Lauren is the smartest person in this channel. Christina is sweat.
Sweet
"Tottenham" or "bottle of water"...Americans make your choice ahahahah
I just don't feel anything but love
There is a Tottenham in Ontario, as well as London, Stratford and York.
A funny thing is that 'Vaux-hall' came in to Russian as 'Vok-zal', which literally means 'Arrival hall' and translated as 'train station' from Russian to English now 😅
I read that, in the early days of railways, a Russian delegation came to the UK to see how we did it. They visited Vauxhall and apparently mistook the station name as the word for a station.
That's because of the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, not the station.
If you’re gonna make a video like this, please make sure you get it accurate. Holborn is spelled like that, not Holbone. It’s also pronounced Hoeburn not Holburn.
I came down in the comments to check. I thought maybe they'd added a new station I don't know about.
Omg Boston accent is so weird 🤣🤣🤣
I missed my Favorit Word Southwalk.
Its not easy if you are not British, i am not even an english speaker
as i came to the UK 30 years ago and i finded quite diffilcut to learn
this Tube Station.
There is some air-con on the tube but only on the trains that run on the Metropolitan, Circle, Hammersmith & City and District lines.
Omg they're spoiling us so much Christina every day is amazing
Thank you
Hi. How about "Clapham Junction" Ph=F or Ph=P?
Thanks!
re:tottenham = "tottnum"; the vowel sound in an unstressed syllable (like the final syllable of tottenham) is called a schwa, FYI
hi I'm Paria .I'm from Iran but I love Londen. My love is London
So Pretty
As a spaniard, the really difficult ones to pronounce, beside Marylebone, are Gloucester and Leycester 🙂
Christina is soooo cute trying to pronounce the station names 😍
1:18 Lauren, wifi exists but only whilst in the station. No a/c's in the tube!
Fun fact about vauxhall
Russian Empire started calling train stations “vokzal”
Naming came from vauxhall station in London :D
I sweat that music at the end is from like Wii Party or something?!!
Nothing beats the "Bo'oh'o´wa´'ae". That was the coolest! (That's supposed to be "bottle of water", for the 0,1% that reads this).
You guys need to go on DC Metro
me watching an American try to pronounce our underground stations is so funny 😂😂😂
But when I was in NYC there also was no signal in the subway .. maybe it is changed. Its been Already 10years now..
Being from Massachusetts, she should not be unfamiliar with the "ham" suffix. We have tons here Waltham, Needham, Framingham and they're all pronounced like the "ham" in Tottenham.
Christina was saying Sir Cus
I’m in London right now!
i can say travling at 2 in the morning to Heathrow is less busy and Heathrow is on the Piccadilly and Elizabeth lines
Otto from a Fish Called Wanda: I am fighting the London Underground!
lauren: "just get rid of all the R's" *heathrow* christina: "heathRow" lauren: "mmhmm" uhh what!?!?!?!
It was probably because I was tired after flying 11+ hours to get there, but I had to laugh at Cockfosters.
Tottenham that i know as football fans is a North London Club who wear white jersey and play on Premier League 😁😁
Tottenham - Totnum
Greenwich - Grenitch
Marylebone - Marlabun
Ruislip - Ryeslip
Leicester Square - Lester Square
Holborn - Hoebun
Vauxhall - Voxull
Haha its Holborn I think
You couldve been much crueler with this one.
Ruislip
Theydon Bois
Walthamstow Central
Harlesden
Maida Vale
Southwark
Plaistow &
Hainault
All spring to mind 😅😅
6:16 whhhhaaat it's Holborn not Holbone 😂
I haven't been watching for a little bit, did they get a new person to do the subs? They're soooo much better. They're actually correct AND add extra info about pronunciation etc, feels so much more professional.
