Great vid, as usual! As a Malone-Stockton fan during my teenage years, I really hoped and believed the Williams-Boozer duo could be the next to lift the Jazz. Unfortunately, besides everything you say, D-Will didn't want to stay in Salt Lake, never liked the place and wanted a bigger market...

I started following the NBA around 2002-2003, my fav NBA games were NBA Live 2003, and NBA Street Vol.2, (ahh the nostalgia!) Anyway, around that time- AK47 quickly became my favorite player. Here was this lanky 6'9 Russian dude with a 7'4 wingspan, crazy athleticism, amazing defensive abilities, would steal from point guards and block centers, dunk on you, knock down a decently reliable mid range and 3 pointer, fill up the stat sheet, worked hard, and was humble. He was definitely a unique player, and I even got his jersey and modeled my own play style off him. As a result of him being my fav player, I was also a huge Jazz fan. I remember all of these events in this video, the heart breaking moments losing to the Lakers and the Spurs, the bright moments beating the Rockets and the Warriors (same series that Baron Davis dunked on AK, lol- although AK had an insane amount of blocks that series)!. The trades and acquisitions, the rough patches with Coach Sloan, etc. It was definitely a very interesting stretch of years, lots of fun memories and exciting nail biting games. Thank you for this video and bringing me down memory lane :D

I remember it a bit differently as a Jazz fan. The first cracks were with Carlos Boozer. He started complaining about his contract during a time when he was not only injured, but the Jazz were winning with his backup, Paul Millsap, putting up numbers. That was the 08-09 season, and the team actually faltered after he came back. Boozer ended up choosing to opt into the final year of his contract, and with Millsap already making starter money, along with several other players on large contracts, the team started to feel the crunch. Starter Ronnie Brewer was traded away to save money, which made Williams unhappy. The 2010 offseason saw the real changes - Boozer, Kyle Korver and Wesley Mathews all signed elsewhere, as the team looked to save money, though they did trade for Al Jefferson to help make up for the loss of Boozer and the injured Mehmet Okur. They also added Gordon Hayward in the draft that year, but it would be years before he would become an all-star caliber player. Despite the changes, the team was winning, until at some point a rift developed in the locker room and the team started losing. That precluded Jerry Sloan's retirement, Deron Williams being traded and Andrei Kirilenko leaving to play in Russia.

  • @tractboy34

Karl Malone and Stockton had great careers under jerry Sloan.. things were goin good for boozer and Williams as well. They benefited from the plays and system that Sloan, Stockton, and Malone built.. once Williams and Sloan couldn’t get along and Sloan got fired that’s when boozer and Williams decline began. They were never the same after that.

I don't think they had a better option at the time, but that's a lot to spend on a guy who would be a fifth option. Damned if you do damned if you don't. Hindsight is a bitch. Great video!

AK 47 after signing a monster contract and getting shooting leasons from Jeff Hornacek tried to change his game. It went really badly for him and UT. Also Paul Millsap was not the player he was in Atlanta. Derrion didn't like the training demands on him by the Jazz. We all know an ankle injury ruined his career. Something the Jazz worked diligently to avoid. Also why they traded up to get him over injury prone CP-3. Who they believed would skip town as soon as possible. Gordon took 7 years too develop

Jazz had franchise players, then they didn't as the game transformed from being about teams to being about players... Stockton kept Malone on board, because any scorer would love playing with the best pure point of all time on a perennial contender team. Jazz golden days dissolved due to the Williams/Sloan fallout that saw Sloan retire as he saw the direction that players were going in (becoming divas). Now Popovich has played long enough to see that the game isn't what it was as well, now that his franchise players are gone. Popovich will pass Sloan in wins soon and then maybe he'll retire as well. Sloan's first wife passed in 2004 and for a moment it seemed he might retire back then as Stockton/Malone were over, but he showed that he can develop and coach other players (maybe Popovich will do the same). Now Sloan has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia, so he's dealing with that, but it beats playing in China.
