    Merveilleux Haendel.

    I miss having more extensive notes - or any notes at all - regarding this performance and the performers. I so enjoy Vox Luminis and their wonderful work bringing so many classics alive to us. I am not familiar with this beautiful venue and the instrumentalists. But bravo on this great sonic gift to us.

      This was recorded at Versailles in the castle's chapel. This chapel is a masterpiece of french baroque architecture ordered by king Louis XIV .

    Extremely fine interpretation of one of Händel's master pieces. In fact, it tops most of the older versions. Zsuszi Tóth's performance is outstanding.

    Handel's Ode to St. Cecilia's Day seems to owe the greatest debt to Gottleib Muffat, with material from five pieces being reworked into the score. Not only were themes reused in their entirety, but also counter subjects and continuing phrases were put to use by Handel. No wonder Handel wrote it in six days!

      @@shadbolt4687 The pieces all derive from Muffats "Componimenti musicali", published the very same year (1736), that Hände wrote HWV 76. The subjects he uses in different ways are the following:
      Ouverture (Larghetto e staccato); from Muffat C(omponimenti).m(usicali). Suite I: Courante
      Minuet D-major; from Muffat C.m. Suite III Menuet
      1. When nature underneath a heap; from Muffat C.m. Suite VI: Fantaisie (Adagio) and Suite IV: Fantaisie (Tempo giusto)
      6. The soft complaining flute; from Muffat C.m. Suite III: Sarabande
      8. But oh! what art can teach; from Muffat C.m. Suite III: Fantaisie
      According to Bernd Baselt, this borrowings/inspirations where already pointed out in 1896 within the edition of HWV 76 by Friedrich Chrysander.

      @@Arsamenes1 Many thanks. One comes across GFH'S borrowing of specific phrases such as from Telemann in his Solomon and his Alexander's Feast. But your very comprehensive advice avoids my having to listen to Muffat's oratorio " Research" suggested by the previous blogger !Best wishes.

      @@shadbolt4687 You are welcome. Just today I received a printed score of a new critical edition of the Ode to Saint Cecilia's Day , stumbled across this rendition and read your question. Since I am myself a Händel scholar and have the fitting literature at hand in my office, it was a few minutes task to look up the correct quotes and answer you.

    30:48 (T) The violins proclaim
    (41:40) 42:15 (S) Orpheus could lead the savage race,
    And trees uprooted left their place
    Sequacious of the lyre:
    43:28 (S) But bright Cecilia raised the wonder higher:
    When to her Organ vocal breath was given
    An Angel heard, and straight appeared -
    Mistaking Earth for Heaven.
    44:10 (S and chorus) As from the power of sacred lays
    The spheres began to move,
    And sung the great Creator's praise
    To all the blest above;
    So when the last and dreadful hour
    This crumbling pageant shall devour,
    46:03 (S and chorus) The trumpet shall be heard on high ;
    46:30 (chorus) The dead shall live, the living die,
    And music shall untune the sky
    51:08 Hallelujah chorus from Messiah
