  • The Earned Income Credit (EIC) is a tax credit available to U.S. taxpayers with earned income under certain thresholds. The credit is increased for those who have qualifying children as well.
The test for qualifying child for EIC purposes is slightly different than what it means to be a qualifying child for Child Tax Credit (CTC) purposes on IRS Form 8812.
In this example, we look at a taxpayer with a 21-year-old son who lives at home and is a full-time college student.

If my daughter in college is using our home as her primary residence but stays in an apartment while she is at college full time in a different city, how many months do I say she lived with us on the EIC form? What if she had summer school courses which were "out in the field" where she wasn't physically at either residence?
