Hey Prof... thanks for these videos! Do you ever feel like new sets have cards that are too specific to their individual set, and don't have a lot of generalized synergy with other sets, or small collections of cards? I sometimes find myself looking at a new set of cards and lamenting how many of them require a creature type or condition that is only for the newest set of cards. Perhaps I just prefer the core sets and their universal card design? I think about people with smaller collections, and how a small group of boosters, while good for draft, are likely not evergreen enough for integration into a larger collection of deckbuilding cards, especially if every one of the best cards require supporting cards from the rest of the new set. Forgive me if my question may not make much sense.

Our minimum wage in Brazil is around 260,00 dollars, so if we really love collecting Magic cards, some of us have to literally choose between paying the rent, buying groceries and all the bills or buying that Collector Booster Box. Most of the value in standard booster packs comes from the rare/mythic slot. Collector boosters have currently 5 R/M per pack, or 60 per box; compared to a draft booster box which has about one per pack or 36+ R/M (average of about 40) per box. Since collector boosters also have a guaranteed high rate of foil or showcase prints, the average value of one collector booster could reasonably be the same as 6 draft boosters. If it does, a 12-pack collector booster box has the same value as 2x draft booster boxes. The problem ultimately isn't that *collector* boosters are a bad buy compared to draft boosters, it's that buying boosters at all is a crapshoot. Paraphrasing what the Prof keeps saying, 1 $30 single you'll actually use seems expensive but it's a great deal compared to 10 bulk rares and a miscellaneous pile of U/C.

Collector Booster Boxes are a double edge sword. Like you said Prof, they make singles worth less with how they flood the market with Rares and Mythics which is good. On the other hand they completely destroy the Common and Uncommon foil market which I find to be a bad thing. Going back to the Ravnica Allegiance days, I used to jump with joy when I would crack a foil Skewer the Critics because they were $10 while the base card was $0.50. It would be a nice boost to my store credit, or prize winnings. Now though the foil slot is useless unless it is an extra Rare or Mythic.
Thanks for these videos. They are a good way to stave off my temptation to buy the collector boxes. I'll stick to the one set booster as even when I get a miss in my packs, there is usually something interesting in there.
Bought Raycons for my sister thanks to you, Jimmy and Josh which they are still very happy with even after a couple of months. Raycon even re-sent the shipment free of charge after the first one was swallowed by a black hole immediately after leaving the warehouse.
I suggest shuffling until all the pringles are together and on the bottom of the deck. Stare at them the entire time. Be sure to make direct eye contact. And then hand them back their deck when you finish cutting.

I actually bought one collect booster box ever...from this set. I was really excited to get the gods for some decks and I figured that (as a bonus) they'd be worth more than they turned out to be. Even still, it was a splurge item that I really enjoyed. I rarely spend that kinda money on myself, - I usually spend my money on more practical adult things and stuff for the kids. I don't regret the purchase, but I doubt that I'd do it again.
In Canada we pay $325... I get that most of that is probably due to exchange rate, etc. However, I have yet to see anything good come out of a collector's booster box. It's funny, but I have way more luck buying single packs. Out of the last 6 packs i purchased, I made enough to buy a draft booster box and the commander sets... My heart breaks for ya, prof... It really does... But you make me smile and I thank you for that...
I feel so bad for you Professor. I watch so I know when a booster box might be worth it. So thank you for suffering so me and others don't have too. I can't speak for anyone else, but I enjoy these more when you are able to open allot of boxes. So thank you for what you do.
Thing with the collector booster boxes. If they dont figure them out soon i see that product going the way of the fatpack. Till it dies. Then getting extended arts is going back to expensive.

My favorite part about these videos is that they’re only barely longer than 10 minutes, so even if you had no idea how bad these boxes are, you can tell just from the length
no joke, I really enjoy the sarcastic sense of humor Prof has added to his videos as of recent months. I can appreciate a little sass with my MTG learning experience lol Much love from Jersey
My first game of MTG was during M11. I got some sample decks. The free ones, they just gave them out. (Later, I'd get five of each colour when I got back into it during RTR/Gatecrash. All five boxes. Free. But ignore that for now.) The sample deck I first had contained two Lightning Bolts. Lightning Bolt is three dollars. Not single a uncommon or common in this ultra-luxury premium ultimate set is worth more than three dollars. Legends of Runeterra is really fun.
Or with 210 dollars you could have bought 7 dragon's maze event decks that cost 30 dollars to get parallel lives that cost 40 dollars plus a godless shrine that's 10 dollars.
@tolariancommunitycollege way to go prof. another amazing video! you dont disappoint, and so funny and your right.... “12 foils packs and pringles cards” i love it 😂 and yes those collector booster boxes are expensive but we will continue to following you as a community 👍🏻

Don't forget my favorite. 1 higher power EDH deck in singles, or 4 lower power ones with money left over. I've also started using the stock market as a equivalence to what I could buy in magic cards. Could get some stock in google, or 2 revised dual lands
When i saw the thumbnail.. All I had to say was.. "No professor.. Buy anything but that." Also lets play a drinking game! Everytime you see a foil that is curled, take a shot.
I feel like if he gets sponsored for a Pauper deck, he's going to say "Compared to other formats, you'll save quite enough money, and with that, you could buy these Raycon Earbuds" Or something like that, I don't know
Before Tibalt's Trickery was banned, the set was a little bit better off value wise, but the collector's boosters were just over priced this time around.
“The Bears of Littjara” could have been a game changing and ultra-valuable card with one simple change. Switch “target creature or planeswalker” to just “target.” Change my mind. Imo, currently, at best, it kills a massive and unblockable creature. At worst, it does nothing on the third turn it’s out, bc you got board-wiped.
I just got into magic a few weeks ago and wanted to get started fast so I bought a normal set booster from Walmart and pulled a showcase foil of sigrid god favored($2.13 from what I could research), and a borderless barkchannel pathway/tide channel pathway (between $10-$12) all the prices I got off of TCGplayer
The first fat pack I bought after returning to MTG in 2019 was Kaldheim on launch day. Almost ALL of my foils are curled considerably. Especially the foil basics that came in the fat pack. After ONE WEEK! I have foils from older sets that haven't curled. I have a good amount of foils whether they're from more recent sets like War of the Spark, or sets older than that, and they either aren't curled at all, or curled slightly even unsleeved. Note, I haven't had any other bad experiences with card quality in Kaldheim besides the foils. From now on, whenever I get a foil, I'm double sleeving them the second they come out of the pack. Also, I got one of the Zendikar Rising Commander precons, and my commander was already curled when I opened the box. The least WotC could have done was put the commander in the same sealed wrapper that they do with the foil promo rares in pre-release kits back in the day.
Saw the video length, knew the prof would be headed for disappointment before I even pressed play. Having said that I just managed to break even on my set booster box. I call that a win with Kaldheim. Thanks 'The List'.

Prof's jacket lookin like Teferi's deck collection
Thanks for these videos. They are a good way to stave off my temptation to buy the collector boxes.
I'll stick to the one set booster as even when I get a miss in my packs, there is usually something interesting in there.
That coat is amazing, Professor!
I love it!
Bought Raycons for my sister thanks to you, Jimmy and Josh which they are still very happy with even after a couple of months. Raycon even re-sent the shipment free of charge after the first one was swallowed by a black hole immediately after leaving the warehouse.
When I cut my friends deck, a pringle always ends up on top. It's a consecrated sphinx. 😒
Rather a consecrated pringle.....
just eat this busted card so he doesnt play with it
I suggest shuffling until all the pringles are together and on the bottom of the deck. Stare at them the entire time. Be sure to make direct eye contact. And then hand them back their deck when you finish cutting.
imagine saying consecrated sphinx is busted while in search for greatness exists. Lol. It also makes for a fun interaction with an opponents notion thief. You can completely mill your opponent in one turn.
@@flyingchimp5012 in search of greatness isn’t *THAT* great. It’s good, maybe great, but it doesn’t search, and has a limited scry if you whiff in your hand, and can’t be used as a “freecast creature spell with mana value of x+1 or less.”
To our whale friends: Keep cracking this overpriced boxes so that we can keep buying the fancy singles for dirt cheap.
Thanks!
Yes, help a pauper friend out
Soon no one will buy them.
jokes on you, I never sell them!
@@zl2859 jokes on you, you're the one buying overpriced stuff
That's the spirit!
These earbuds got yer Largemouth Bass, Black Bass, Sea Bass.
Honestly, they're worth at least a C+.
The foil borderless pathway lands are so pretty!😍
In Canada we pay $325... I get that most of that is probably due to exchange rate, etc. However, I have yet to see anything good come out of a collector's booster box. It's funny, but I have way more luck buying single packs. Out of the last 6 packs i purchased, I made enough to buy a draft booster box and the commander sets... My heart breaks for ya, prof... It really does... But you make me smile and I thank you for that...
If you watch till the end you'll realize the tolarian professor is just utterly amazing.
I feel so bad for you Professor. I watch so I know when a booster box might be worth it. So thank you for suffering so me and others don't have too. I can't speak for anyone else, but I enjoy these more when you are able to open allot of boxes. So thank you for what you do.
That suit is gorgeous, Prof.
0:54 "rares, mythics, and Pringles"... Yup. I'm dead now. xD That one got me lol
Watching this just made me want to buy all of these beautiful singles that are super cheap. 👍
Thing with the collector booster boxes. If they dont figure them out soon i see that product going the way of the fatpack. Till it dies. Then getting extended arts is going back to expensive.
Forget the play mats or sleevees, where can u get that jacket?
I'm somebody who skips ads whenever possible.
However, this integrated raycon ad, with the music in the background and the narrative tie-in to the episode was well done!
I didn't skip it, and I even laughed!
- Adi.
That jacket is bitchin' Prof!
My favorite part about these videos is that they’re only barely longer than 10 minutes, so even if you had no idea how bad these boxes are, you can tell just from the length
I love these prices. This reminds of when masterpieces were a thing and cards were affordable, but everyone complained.
this.
no joke, I really enjoy the sarcastic sense of humor Prof has added to his videos as of recent months. I can appreciate a little sass with my MTG learning experience lol Much love from Jersey
The salt goes well on those pringles, ahem.. I mean.. "foils".
That sound there at the end summed up everything, perfectly.
Prof is like TCG Jesus. His wallet pays for it so we don’t have to.
Wow. That was the most beautiful statement I have ever heard lol. Its so true though.
Watching prof crack these scratches my irrational compulsion to open collectors boosters myself so really this is a public service
my deepest sympathies but i love these videos professor 🤣
My first game of MTG was during M11. I got some sample decks. The free ones, they just gave them out. (Later, I'd get five of each colour when I got back into it during RTR/Gatecrash. All five boxes. Free. But ignore that for now.) The sample deck I first had contained two Lightning Bolts.
Lightning Bolt is three dollars.
Not single a uncommon or common in this ultra-luxury premium ultimate set is worth more than three dollars.
Legends of Runeterra is really fun.
Or with 210 dollars you could have bought 7 dragon's maze event decks that cost 30 dollars to get parallel lives that cost 40 dollars plus a godless shrine that's 10 dollars.
omg where??
Dont tell them
Lmfao
@@protolight1654 tcgplayer. sadly the rest of the deck is chaff...hmmm...
Yeah rest is bulk but I i still bought 3 event decks for only 70 bucks like 3 days ago so maybe I make a profit or something like that.
@tolariancommunitycollege way to go prof. another amazing video! you dont disappoint, and so funny and your right.... “12 foils packs and pringles cards” i love it 😂 and yes those collector booster boxes are expensive but we will continue to following you as a community 👍🏻
You should just swap out the magic cards for flesh and blood. See how that booster box game plays out
Btw, keep up the good work, professor! I am a (mostly) happy jurisprudence student in South America and there is a single channel I want to watch every single week, no matter what, and that is yours. You probably won't reply directly, but I want to praise you anyway. See you soon, prof!
Am I supposed to feel bad because I watched the video? Instructions unclear. Going to go watch another TCC video to try to balance everything out.
Don't forget my favorite. 1 higher power EDH deck in singles, or 4 lower power ones with money left over.
I've also started using the stock market as a equivalence to what I could buy in magic cards. Could get some stock in google, or 2 revised dual lands
Seeing as Set Boosters are the packs designed to be cracked for "value" would they be better for the booster box game?
Is it worth to buy a set booster box?
I like how he has Jimmy's cookbook in the background. Good for both of them!
When i saw the thumbnail.. All I had to say was.. "No professor.. Buy anything but that."
Also lets play a drinking game! Everytime you see a foil that is curled, take a shot.
Pls sir
I dont even have that much alcohol
Damn that transition to the Raycon ad was slick as hell
I feel like if he gets sponsored for a Pauper deck, he's going to say
"Compared to other formats, you'll save quite enough money, and with that, you could buy these Raycon Earbuds"
Or something like that, I don't know
Thanks, Prof, for hopefully showing many folks a better way to acquire MTG cards and be financially smarter.
Not sure what you could expect when there are only 2 cards worth over 12$. Very little vaue in the set as of now.
Before Tibalt's Trickery was banned, the set was a little bit better off value wise, but the collector's boosters were just over priced this time around.
I still feel that kaldheim is under appreciation somwhow
@@kisekinecro I really enjoy some of the mechanics, but from a money standpoint, it isn't there.
I listened to your agony on my Raycon E25 wireless earbuds. It's the only product that lets me hear the full depth of your ennui.
The correct reason I came here is, "Better you then me!"
I really do love and appreciate this channel. I have taken the professor's advice have been buying singles. Best thing iv ever started doing
“The Bears of Littjara” could have been a game changing and ultra-valuable card with one simple change. Switch “target creature or planeswalker” to just “target.”
Change my mind.
You should label the "extended art" as stretched art since that is the truth.
Through the years we've seen the Professor gradually transform into Lebowski.
The irony and the sarcasm in the speech, OMG i love it 🤣
This reminds me of a BDG Quote:
"Because God has cursed me for my hubris, and my work is never finished."
Imma support RayCons just for the giggles just bc they support the Prof
Saw the video length, knew the prof would be headed for disappointment before I even pressed play.
Having said that I just managed to break even on my set booster box. I call that a win with Kaldheim. Thanks 'The List'.
Prof, just let me fulfill my gambling addiction
Can we just take a moment to appreciate how the prof colour co-ordinated with the booster box colours
I don't buy Magic products anymore. They clearly don't want my money.
Play legends of Runeterra and spend no money at all for the same out of fun playing magic, or more!
This series of the Professors videos are among my favorite to view on RUclips.
*looks in mirror*
"are we the baddies?"
