Did you ever have any issues with overheating? I've heard blackmagic gear can run pretty hot.

With their cooling solution - it will be cold. With proper cooling Blackmagic I had Blackmagic recorders running playbacks nonstop inside a wall for 3 months in an exhibition - were cold to the touch actually

why do you have ref in and not ref out from your main switcher?

might be because the switcher is only a ref consumer to genlock with. there is no ref out on that device.
