Today we are taking a look at the Rarest Les Paul Guitars that were in Lester Polfus' Estate Auction. These are the guitars that would be considered "rare" even if Les Paul hadn't owned them!
It is time we take a look at the Les Paul Estate auction which occurred on June 2012 where all of Les’ remaining guitars, mics, music making utensils etc were all auctioned off to the public. Bidding got fierce! These are what I deemed the RAREST Les Pauls in Les Paul’s Collection based simply on rarity - not just because Les owned them. Even if you originally owned them, they would still be valuable! We will have at least 2 more episodes in this series covering Les’ favorites and the weirdest guitars in his collection

Les had some great guitars! He also SOLD some great ones throughout his lifetime. Next month, we will document a very special gift that Les sold in the mid-80s

Some of his old test equipment that was sold at this auction popped up on my local Facebook Marketplace and I immediately snagged it.
Great episode!! I built at least a couple of those. The Spotlight (83 210), and the Standard Special (Candy Apple Red). I also have a photo of his "favorite", made when he brought it to the plant for a clean-up/set-up job. RL
Hands down my favorite is the “The Les Paul” It is such a beautiful work of art!!! The amazing woodwork along with the wooden accents. Hard to beat!!!
The handwritten paperwork of Les Paul's story about that specific guitar has to be priceless...imo
I bought a guitar at this auction and it now proudly hangs in the rock & roll hall of fame. It was a Electra that had notes from Les in the body. He had refretted, and hand wound the pickups. Tom his luthier confirmed it was a recording guitar in the 70's. We had it appraised by the late from Jay from Mandolin Brothers.
If it wasn't the first one then it may have been the second. The one I liked best was his The Paul. Within beautiful top and that rose wood on the headstock. And for once the interior lining of the case seemed to match it well.
Cool episode looking forward to the next two of these ones!
Guitar people assemble and get our dose of guitar information 🤘
C U next Tuesday.
I'm gonna stick my neck out and suggest that Les Paul Standard Lite with the Bigsby and the cable hanging off it looks like they were mucking about with a Piezo bridge pickup. At a close view, there are 3 pairs of wires disappearing under the bridge much like an acoustic piezo pickup- it's just not inside the soundbox and mounted to the bridge plate. Maybe? I dunno, first thought on the topic.
You're right. Definitely a piezo bridge and clearly not a roller bridge.
Great episode - and the next two are gonna be bangers, for sure! Love the heavily played LP Recording. I had a '73 that is still an all-time favorite; it has a story... Helped a friend acquire the guitar in '91, then he sold it to me in '92, I played it a bunch and had it refretted and gone-thru in '94', traded it back to him in '95; he kept it till the late 2000's when I helped him sell it to a well known Chicago shop. They didn't really want to buy bc they already had one that was nicer, but added it to their inventor anyway. Turns out -he recently heard the guitar was still at or had returned to the same shop- and was able to purchase it for the third time! What a great guitar IMHO
wow what a story
Austin, I can't imagine the work it takes to make a video of this magnitude! Congrats!...I say you are correct in stating that the Les Paul Recording Prototype at 18:25 was made in the 80's. On the FB page 'Gibson Les Paul' on July 21, 2023, there was a pic of this same guitar and a quote from Jason Hogan from the museum's website where this was displayed. Jason was quoted saying "This was built for Les in 1982 and became the instrument he used most often during the second half of his career. He famously played it in weekly performances at Fat Tuesday's and the Iridium in New York City that continued until weeks before his death in 2009".
I remember that Les Paul Recording prototype from when I saw Les at Fat Tuesday's in the early-mid 90s. I saw him three times, and I'm 99% sure he was playing that exclusively each time. The sound from the pickups was incredibly clear and pristine, as close as possible to the sound of his recordings. I'd go so far as to say that they were almost too clear for anyone not named Les Paul -- but he made them sound great. He was great, too -- warm, funny, and very approachable. He was like everybody's favorite grandfather, who just happened to be a guitar virtuoso and mechanical genius.
you have the best guitar channel , no politics no narcississm just a guy who really loves guitar sharing his love for the guitars with great knowledge and a nice personality , refreshing your channel is doing well and your nit in iwht the "IN" crowd of guitar channels , your channel is great great work
Great video...Trogly's level of guitar research and knowledge blows me away. The guitars in this video are all fantastic, especially since they were from Les Paul's personal collection. I can't wait to see more videos from this collection and auction.
Nice! I was thinking of doing a similar quick vid on my channel.
I have a PRS Custom 22 Piezo that I rewired for individual coil split, and there are days I prefer the split humbuckers to my Strat.
Here's a trick for you with PRSs: the way the treble bleed is wired in, your tone changes across the volume range. I like to use the neck pickup in coil split mode with guitar volume down to 6.5, and making up for the volume difference with clean boost.
That one with the 'rollers' i think is a piezo bridge
Hey Austin, you were correct the LP Recording Prototype was not a late sixties model it was made in 1982. It was gifted to the Met Museum in NYC. I won't cut and paste it all here. I attempted to add the link but RUclips must not like that so... look up LP Prototype at met museum.
Nice gift indeed! The real prototype of LPR was sold at this auction. It and it's bass mate didn't look much like a traditional LP either, but had Les' favorite Low Impedance pickups and electronics though.
Hey Trog, You're the first I've heard in years mention the XR2 by name. Mind if I send you one for evaluation? It's pretty damn clean and bright topped, and some funky wiring all original.
And an '82 white dot-neck 335 if interested. All original clean as hell
Hit his link in the description.
I think it’s email…
I’d love to see both of the guitars you guys mentioned reviewed!
I had 0042 Heritage Elite from 1980 - former owner put a Kahler on it! But I used it for over 15 years. It was very heavy! It was 5 years old when I got it in 1985 and was already well worn in and banged up.
I met Les Paul only about a year before he passed. He signed a few things for me, and was super funny as well. Honored that I was able to meet him. The Les Paul is definitely my favorite guitar of all time, having owned several early original 1950's Goldtops and countless reissues.
There's so much here to like it makes it hard to pick a favorite but the 25/50 is definitely one of my favorites. Doing a series on Les Paul was a great idea. It's a good way to inform all of us about the man. Oh, I believe the Bloomberg in question was Mike Bloomberg the guitarist and NOT the mayor of NYC.
Austin, in 1976, I visited Les at his home in Mahwah, NJ and had the pleasure of interviewing him. Les and I posed for a picture of the two of us, and I'm holding the first guitar you showed, The Les Paul model. At the time, it was the fanciest and most expensive Les Paul you could buy.
Hoorah!! LP is mine fave too. Love the Recording cause it's a workshop. The Quilty 3 pup, cause versatile rules. I got a LP Stu Lite MIII - been sitting 3 days label created, how much do I bug 'em, they could hold it even longer -Zooks!! Ü ♫
Unrelated to the video but my dream guitar is a Les Paul personal) I heard that they are kinda rare... But I'm saving up for it) I wonder if you had one in your collection?
Harley Benton makes an SG custom almost just like that. I've got one and I loved em.
A 25% buyer’s premium is ridiculous!
Wow factor 11. Very cool 😎.Thanks 💯
Great video!
Collecting LPs (or any single kind of guitar) seems tiring. I’d like my collection to have one of everything.
I may be the only one who loves the Double Cut 400 XPL in Charcoal Metallic .......
that guitar is wicked cool
Not the only one.
I still have the plastic film on the guard of my 2018 Flying V.
Shame you ignored the rare Fenders that he owned. There are more guitars in the world than just Gibsons.
Agreed, Leo actually gave Les a Telecaster prototype
Can anybody out there give me any positives [Change My Mind !!] about micro-tuners at the stop-bar ? (BB King Lucile models for example, and I think I saw one on an LP towards the beginning of Trogly’s video)
I enjoyed that. Austin's level of expertise is mind blowing
One of the best channels, keep it real brother
Wow! What else can I say?
The most fun and ironic thing is the Les Paul Fender amp.
well Les Paul was the man, so i guess he should have had the best he wanted im surprised he didnt have a 59. nice video thanks for sharing. his name is certainly on most of my guitars.
I own a 1980 Heritage 80 Elite with second SN 0039. The main SN shows is being built on the 176th day of 1980. I've heard the second serial numbers are random and not consecutive, for whatever reason. It's looking like there might be some truth to that.
Randy Leonard (an employee at the time) suggests that they started in order, but didn't stay that way later on in production
Mr T., I know you are more of geetar guy, but this is interesting-I have never seen one before: Reverb: "1972 Gibson L6-S Bass Prototype (Ripper, Grabber) Singlecut Sunburst" -bizarre
You should considered doing Les's other non-gibson guitars...think its interesting he kept a 1951 no-caster...picture of him with the tele are interesting - looks happy lol...bet there is a story there...also he kept some kramers, fender strats/teles, and etc...doesn't seem like there are any utube videos of him playing these, likely for legal/agreement reasons with Gibson, but we know he sold guitar during his lifetime that I assume he didn't favor, so why did he keep these until the end...?
wish we could hear them
My body is ready
Did Les Paul get bursts from Gibson and if so who did sell them to?
Piezo in the goldtop with the Bixby?
No bursts? Surprising
Not to be played. Wonder if that was just meant to mean not to be played on TV or live concert so not to make people ask for it or something or if he was just trying to keep it new and very collectible?
that 1980 was a steal
I'm honestly surprised that first one only went for 48k!
That is too much to wrap my head around 😮 impressive though. ❤
Yabba dabba dooo
Hey Austin did you see that Kirk of Metallica is selling his guitar he calls sunny for 500,000 dollars and supposedly if you buy it you also get a made to order guitar from Gibson.
This is why you never mess with Mother Nature.
I'm sure Les could call Gibson and get whatever he wanted created with whatever specs he wanted.
For the right amount of money, you can get whatever you want!
@@marions.120 yeah, but Les would probably get his FREE...JMO
Welcome back chocolate ice!!
The Les/Dolly photo seems to be a paste. She's not actually there.
Trogly wants that Steve Howe les Paul back.
@@Mr_Turtlewizard That one came to me in the era before I had a personal collection and everything I had was for sale. I'm still in contact with the owner - he said when he tires of collecting guitars, he will sell it back to me
Ever gonna do the Alex lifeson custom shop les paul??
Which One? Trogly isn't really a fan of any trem system on a Les Paul That's been my thinking why we've never seen a video. However he did do the two Epiphone versions in the last year or so.
Trogly did two Epiphone Lifeson Les Paul Axcess (2021, 2023) models but I haven't seen a Gibson one.
Troglodytes assemble!!
Woot woot Trogly's guitars 🎸
ES-335/45/55 > Les Paul model
17:40 these tuners look so crooked and unaligned. QC at Gibson isn't always the best
Hey Troglodytes!
Not To Be Played. Is The One.
Agreed
Let’s do it!
Hmmm
Congratulations on climbing to the summit of the Mole Hill and earning a Gold Medal.
Who here actually listens regularly to Les Paul‘s music?
Daily
That was guitar porn
Oooooohhhhhgggaaaahhhhh!
