If you ever decide to watch this, 2nd season and half of first are anime original route and ending. To watch the right amazing story that follows manga: Season 1 episode 1-14 -> Book of Circus -> Book of Murder -> Book of Atlantic. This is the canon story.
The part when they met Prince Soma and had the Curry cooking contest are also somewhat canon except for the angel and some of it's deeds. And after that you get to the BoC. (They get the circus tickets after the contest in the manga)
Would reccomend first season then Book of Circus, Book of Murder then Book of Atlantic. The first couple of episodes of Black Butler are canon in the first season but then everything after is made up but it does give a good hint at what the characters that were written in become of when you read the manga.
Pretty much if you want the canon epiodes only watch Black Butler season 1 episodes 1 to 11 and then move on the Book of Circus and after that Book of Murder and lastly Book of Atlantis.

Some can enjoy it but that doesn't mean its good. It does ruin the characters since its anime original. After you start watching original material it makes you look back on season 2 and how bad it is Bad from the character building perspective.
I enjoyed it, I loved the fact that Sebastian had someone who was able to rival him for a change, but most fans either have the mindset that if its not canon than don't bother which is why season 2 gets such a bad wrap.

If you are considering watching this, assuming you haven't already at the time of me commenting, The storyline chronologically that you should follow when watching goes as follows: 1) Black Butler (ep 1-15) 2) Black Butler: Book of Circus 3) Black Butler: Book of Murder (parts 1&2) 4) Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic 5) Black Butler (ep 16-24) 6) Black Butler II The reason why Black Butler is split in half is because multiple additions of the anime are based in between the events of the first addition of the anime. Black Butler (ep 1-15), Book of Circus, Book of Murder, and Book of the Atlantic are all based of of different story arcs from the manga (which I totally recommend reading). The back half of Black Butler and all of Black Butler 2 are original and not based off of the manga.
I watched this show so many times it made me so sad but it was such an amazing story. There aren't nearly enough reactions to it online so I would highly recommend reacting to it! 🥺

Indeed, as others said, most of season 1 and all of season 2 gets ignored and erased for the newer black butler content as Book of Circus, Book of Murder, and Book of the Atlantic is directly from the manga. Season 1 deviated from the manga and wasn't that great of an ending. I'd say only 7 or 8 episodes from season 1 remain canon for the Book of *blank* storylines. The manga plot is really good and interesting.
If you plan on watching the series, just know that everything past episode 14 of the first season is entirely made up and anime original. The entirety of season two does not follow the manga, it’s also anime original and not very good,so skip it and go straight to season three, Book of Circus, which picks up were the first half of season one left off in terms of manga canon. Essentially, if you want the genuine Black Butler story, watch season one episodes 1-14, Book of Circus, Book of Murder, and Book of Atlantic.

Season 2 never happened period actually. It can be completely skipped and you will still have seen everything the source material has animated.
