  • Why does the same note played on various musical instruments sound different on each one? In this video you'll learn about the components that determine an instrument's timbre, or unique tonal quality.
    I discuss the science behind harmonic overtones. I introduce the three elements that make up an instrument's envelope: Attack, Sustain, and Decay.

    You are a great presenter! I used to coach executives in their presentations and I really enjoy both the content and the way you present it. First, you are easy on the eyes and have a calm, confident, enthusiastic presence. You don't waste many words, making your points quite succinctly. Your tempo is spot on. Some presenters have voices that wear an audience out. Your voice attracts and does not cause listener fatigue. Keep it up!

    Why does acoustic instruments only have envelopes of 3 parts ASD and not ADSR? For ASD, why isn't it called ASR(Seem to be the same thing)?

    If a violin abruptly end its playing into silence right after the sustain period does it mean that it has no decay time?

    • @AudioUniversity
      @AudioUniversity  3 года назад

      Yes. If the player stops the sound abruptly.

    Is the factor of envelope important for our ears in determining the sound of different instruments? If I play the piano in a DAW and cut away the DSR from th ADSR, it is still possible for our ears to know that it is a piano sound. That's a lot of questions, would be great if you would help me out hehe, I am very committed self-learning audio and just starting out. :)

    Excuse me sir by any chance does envelope of a sound has got something to do with PRaT a.k.a Pace, Rhythm and Timing on speakers? it maybe a dumb question but i just think they might be a little bit similar as they affect how natural the speaker will sound.It's also like how reviewers say about how speakers are slow or fast i kinda understand it slow systems tend to sound like low on energy but could be airy as result of that i dont know somehow decay has also something to do with "airyness" while the fast seems always very energetic or danceable and decay so fast that it perceived as lack of "airyness". your also right the genetics really drives your preference drives on how you want your speaker to sound and genre preferences. Also you didn't talk about timbre or is it just another word for overtone or harmonics because i've heard timbre also what makes speaker sound natural or realistic and why all speakers sound different even if made by the same company but they always stick to the same sound signatures for their speakers. I was obsessed with natural sound because i listened to sony vs bose though we can argue that they say bose is better sounding but what i have noticed it doesnt sound natural even voices have like a robotic quality to them or some sort of filter and wonder why and still people love bose and then sony on the other hand just sounded like i can be fooled with this speaker play a raining audio and i will definitely believe it is raining outside but sony does lack detail and are a bit warmer you probably dont even use those equipment as they're more for consumers but that is my take on it.please correct me if am wrong thank you. so much.Last question i feel these cabin pressure like those from noise cancelling headphones and i dont know why its coming from my speakers it isnt even annoying the NC headphones are more annoying but i do feel it on other speakers and other speakers don't have this quality they say my speakers are out of phase but when i put my iphone which has a mono speaker a 5s one it has that same pressure it is mostly heard on the highs but the bose ones are just the worst aside from the pressure they ear piercing for me but not for other people like my dad i can't listen long with any as in any bose equipments wonder what is this pressure thing do you know what it is sir? I also wanna learn more about speaker properties and even microphone properties and it seems you have got some in your channel which is of big help but i always feel like im still not learning enough. great videos by the way very straight to the point detailed yet easy to understand. There is i think only two questions in those long comment sir about PRaT and the pressure on some speakers on high freq and oh also about timbre.

    After a cymbal is hit, does it really have sustain time? Right after attack it starts to lower in amplitude, decay.

    • @AudioUniversity
      @AudioUniversity  3 года назад

      Good question, H Z Tan. I guess it depends on the cymbal and how it is being played. Although, I think you’re correct when you say the decay is long, but the sustain is quite short.

    Dear Sir, Congratulations!!! I have a question on guitar multi effect processors. Is it possible to fix 2 effect processors in series to guitar to get a blend sound effects??? Thanks

    • @AudioUniversity
      @AudioUniversity  4 года назад

      Yes! Placing several effect pedals in line is a common technique. Many guitarists several pedals on one pedalboard to blend effects.

    Does attack time really important? When playing something like a piano, the attack time is heard to be instant, no increase from silence to the peak.

    • @DJPastaYaY
      @DJPastaYaY 3 месяца назад +1

      Different instruments will have different attack times so it is important. A piano might be instant but a violin could have a slightly longer attack time.

    Dear Sir, you demo is great. I have a confusing thing on guitar amplifier. Normal we use external microphone to catch the sound from guitar amplifier.
    Can't we use headphone output of the amplifier to fix directly to the mixer???? What is the next option? Any additional out put from amplifier instead headphone?? Thanks

      I’m not able to find the exact model you are using. If there is a headphone output, it can be used. Just make sure to adjust the level so that there is no clipping at the input of the mixer. If there is a line output, that’s a better option.

    Isn't release the time it takes to get from the sustain level to zero? Normally decay is the time it takes to reach the sustained value from the maximum value reach from attack.

    • @AudioUniversity
      @AudioUniversity  3 года назад +2

      When it comes to virtual instruments, you're correct. You're referring to ADSR (Attack, Decay, Sustain, and Release). I'm describing an older way of thinking that applies to acoustic instruments.
