  • THE RISE OF NATONALISM IN EUROPE CHAPTER 01 OF HISTORY CLASS X
    Censorship and Repression
Censorship Laws: To curb the spread of nationalist and liberal ideas, conservatives imposed strict censorship on the press. Newspapers, books, and pamphlets were closely monitored to prevent the publication of revolutionary ideas.
Surveillance: Governments kept a close watch on individuals and groups suspected of promoting liberal or nationalist ideas. Secret police forces were often used to infiltrate and dismantle such movements.
The major powers (Britain, Austria, Prussia, and Russia) formed the Congress System to maintain the conservative order and suppress any revolutionary or nationalist uprisings across Europe.
They met periodically in conferences to discuss and coordinate actions against potential threats to the established order.
    Long-term Consequences
The conservative policies of censorship and repression delayed but could not prevent the spread of nationalism and liberalism in Europe.
The dissatisfaction with conservative rule laid the groundwork for the revolutions of the 19th century, which ultimately led to the unification of countries like Italy and Germany and the establishment of more liberal governments across Europe.
