He was down 0-2 to the best zerg in the world then beat him 3 games in a row, then took out the best protoss in the world, then won 4 straight against Maru my mind is still blown.

Dude this guy is insane… I’m Korean and I loved watching Koreans win at tournaments. But when I saw Oliveira won, my jaw dropped… his builds are not something super new or anything but his micro ability… dang another level. Huge respect for this guy! If you see Maru got beaten 4:1 that says something.

  • @mitchelgoodnough7361

Part of what made it the best tournament for me was how he beat the best player in each race. He didn't get an easy run. He beat the best Zerg (arguably), then the best protoss and finally, the final boss, Maru. The Maru games were the most impressive for me, considering Maru is the best TvT player in history. I'm sure other people felt the same way after game 1, where it was a Maru stomp. After, I was like, "well, Olivera played really well, but it's kinda a letdown now." Then he just started crushing Maru, deflecting every push sent his way. Great games.

  • @luckylarry71

Watching Reynor, HerO, and then finally Maru, visibly crushed once they came to the realisation how fucking determined and stone-cold this boy is, blew me away. Expecially Maru man, this dude almost never cracks, but you could see it sinking in and how he couldn't process exactly what just happened. Reynor was twitching like a muppet in an utter disbelief.. .

Zombiegrub was going crazy, the original video is worth watching. The game was amazing, they should have a prize for the best game in the tournament and this game would win it. If someone is wondering how Oliveira was able to pull this off, I have one secret to share with you guys.
The person Oliveira had as a practice partner for this tournament was someone little known dude called Joona Sotala, also known as Serral.
Before the World Championships, Oliveira was playing a 2v2 tournament with Serral as his partner and in another tournament earlier Serral had just suffered a crushing defeat against Maru.
I believe Serral wanted someone to practice TvZ with to crush Maru in the finals with and since he was already friends with Oliveira, he could practice with him, after all... Oliveira learning his new plays and strategies isn't that big of a deal, Serral could easily beat him as he did. It just turns out that it wasn't TvZ Serral needed to worry about and that it would be Oliveira that would get more out of those practice sessions.

I have been watching (and slightly playing) Starcraft for over a decade. Runs like this do not happen when you have such GIANTS in the field. Being rank 21 is AMAZING but, when you are playing against the best in the world where the skill gap from rank 15 to rank 3 is a big grandmaster and masters in ranked leagues (numbers I made up to give context) where you only have to win ONE game NOT a SERIES... It shows how remarkable his run really is... OR maybe a new TIME and challenger has risen to the god tier rank! I guess only TIME will tell...

Easy to analyze after what, but... I believe Reynor did a very significant mistake, at the strategic level, in that game.
He took gas way too late in the midgame.
Look e.g. at 14:41 in your replay (and sooner), Reynor is happily filling a bank. 6609/1779 (sometimes ratio actually almost 1:1 cristal/gas)
That's not wrong in itself, if you can spend that money quickly, which he does. But of course, if you are spending, it's even better if you can spend on quality, and that will require more gas than cristal.
Yet, even during the 16:50 mark (in your replay), the observer camera goes through Reynor bases, you can see most of them are STILL laking the extractors! He will build them only a bit later.
Meanwhile, for all this time, Reynor was swimming in cristals he couldn't possibly spend on lings (I don't think so, probably not enough larva), but he was struggling building better units because of the lack of gas (then sticking in the 100+ region, basically zero).
Now Reynor game was still top tier quality. Definitely the kind you'd expect to completely smash any player below top 20, probably more than enough below top 10. And that is still the kind of game he would regularly play in the top 5, and be very likely to win.
I'm still very much impressed with both this game overall, AND Oliveira gameplay in particular.
But Reynor wasn't at all in the mindset of a "this is top5 level, I need to focus". Maybe that's how such a mistake could happen.
What do you think, was that indeed significant? Was that what cost the game to Reynor? And was mindset the main issue, or is it just that at some point, even the best of the best of the best can't think to everything?

I feel like they let Oliveira win to boost StarCraft adoption in China, and he is the only one taking the money. Seriously Reynor without any advantages is nearly unbeatable. But Reynor with more than THREE BASES MORE. Are you kidding me? Also Reynor was constantly out of gas half if the game, but didn't even take half his gas geysers. He must be like, dude, how are you not beating me already, I'm just doing lings. And they changed times name.

Id like that Oliveira a.k.a. TIME is come. And win as a terran. And he not just randomly win. He beats Reynor, Maru, Hero. Its not a ez walk. He win in close games with some comebacks, just a solid terran style. Good job. He only skip Serral to be the true gigachad ).

Maybe I'm being insecure, and I also haven't played seriously since HotS, but the whole thing about not having build order wins against Zerg works both ways. Zerg has pmuch ZERO build order wins because of how sluggish their tech is.

  • @artemirrlazaris7406

12:22, I would disagree, at game time 12:48, zerg should be brood lords and corruptors and infesters coming, brood lords are air tanks, so good, with corruptors you cna defend well... Terran has 3/3 ground jsut aorund 13 minute mark so 30 seconds off, common pro speed, but he was also made a few more hellions... so makes sense...
TErran excels at late game by having Orbitals.... it allows a larger army which allows you to take fights that you shouldn't win, but you can by sheer force.
Zerg can swarm adn over run, but technically most trades in teh game are 1 to 1, if played properly, I often though see, a zerg method of rapid mining and 200 and then attack, and hten waves of attacks unti ltheir poor, this works well if your maxed first and have an income ot burn, but tactically its better to jsut tier and upgrade, brining more value to those units.
Reynor should transition around 12 minute mark, greater spire needs ot be done by then, roaches,,, and ling is an interesting thign I find people get stuck on and allows too much freedom, lings roachs and hydralisks... or something is a good compositions lings navigate front and soak up damage, oraches range is 3... so hydralisk is 6.. but the benefit of hydralisk is that,, it doesn't allow Terran to send out as many drop ships because hydralisk composition stops the medivacs from coming in and pickign them up and leaving, and naother thing is burrow, is 100% should always be researched.. If terran doesn't have a raven... and isn't scanning... having hydralisks burrowed secretly in expansion spots and then meddling back and forth with the other player, allows you to setup easy flanks and total destruciton. IE mineral loss from a cc, being built, either as soon as the scv builds it unburrown target fire and its usllay to fast or let it build... with hydralisk burrow tends ot be a farily strong force, that still has a trade value... that is pretty considerable. plus you can always turn a couple into lurkers.. also...
but lings are still cheap and great for sudden attacks, but his barrages are.. so so...
brood lords and infestors are so important once terran begins getting clumpy with ghosts, jsut having one , when th ghosts pushed in burrow, would of made teh ghosts retreat and then Oliveira may think different'y about moving in.... aggresively...
The other problem is army value composition. If you want to cosntantly use lings... atleast have the same drone count, but yeah.. I I think when reynor was at 90 drones and Ol, was at 60... his army composition can't hit to the same hardness. IE his ling attcks could of been 30 more ling strong which is the equal against ols unit count, ocmposition and owuld probably do that damage he wants to do.. Then we have the supply depot of wased attacks of idle lings.. could of taken out two- three depots in teh same time it took the 4 to kill one... lol... also having a simliar ocmposition and knowing your building counts, you can do an ineffeciency trade, so its like count up their production and you want t odo damage to make all buildings red... and typically terran built their buildings in a such away that you can get double value and thus be effecient by the proxy. barracks... you get x count unit and doing a building banneling rush with a tiny ling force I think would of been superb... 4 bannelings for one turret tower, however if they are built closely, together you can get two turrets... The most buildings you can hit fro mabanneling if they are built like trash, is like 5 buildings.. Thus 5 turrets could be destroyed from simpyl 4 bannelings, so banneligns for buildings are great, if used in the correct location. You can also hold shift so they remote detonate in a ally way to hit both buildings at once!.. Roll to their doom and burst...
If your not matching army unit count.. then ling flood is marginal damage, and wasteresources for higher tiered units and spell caster support which is really important in late game. Fungal... is so good.... against ghosts, and then his lings would of worked wonders, he had no souther detection so a hidden infestor would of been great on that ghost, as a trap. .. the power of burrow! lol

We Aussies actually call them prawns not shrimp but the Australian government made a tourist ad mostly for Americans back in the 80s with crocodile Dundee saying shrimp instead of prawn so they would understand it 🍤😂

22:15, It's nice getting some aussie recognition, but... we don't call them shrimps, we call them prawns, and we don't put them on the barbie... Maybe try 'A snag on the barbie' lol.
Snag meaning sausage, though when someone says they're gonna get a snag or eat a snag, they mean the sausage placed diagonally on a piece of white bread, bonus points if it's from Bunnings.

Only three minutes in and his reaper micro is so entertaining, you forget that he has to be macroing at the same time.
What came to mind just now, is while watching the commentary live, how several of his Korean opponents mentioned that Oliveira is one of their regular training partners. Can't help but wonder if that is one of the contributing factors in him having the confidence on taking them down even though he was only rank 21 in EPT points and staying calm enough to beat Reynor after being behind 0:2 (I don't know how often they train together but they are on the same team).
Anecdote: this is the first time I've watched a "world championship" tournament, so glad I chose this one, only other tournament I bothered to watch was a DreamHack Valencia where there was a similar upset (I should watch them more often, maybe I'm the cause?), can't remember who it was but it was also a Terran who then got shut down hard by -Serral- in the end.
*Edit:* it was MarineLorD at DreamHack Open 2016, who originally thought he could go down to the beach on the last day after getting knocked out but instead 3:0ed in succession Bly, Stephano, Neeb, and Snute (who 3:0ed up-and-coming Reynor just before that) before ending in 0:4 against Nerchio. How time flies!

you know he is teaming with serral in chinese 2v2 tournament.
Back in days, he has to buy beers for innovation, TY, Byun and Dark for training. When he ask clem for practice, Clem said fuck off. No much pro do this for practice.
Because he is from China, KR players wanna prepare gsl with him now.
yea, I was a fanboy. Glad that he took the world champ. I have watched several downs in him. But He proved himself.

Reynor didn't play good that first game. I got frustrated that he sat on 4k minerals and almost no gas, he had so many bases without mining gas from them while trying to transition into Brood Lord's but couldn't due to gas shortage. He deserved that loss.
