A mill might be faster, but there's something about slowing down and doing it the way it's been done for almost 200 years. Shapers and planers are mesmerizing to watch, but they're also effective, precise machines that, along with the lathe, helped make the industrial revolution possible. Great video, Matt!
Gday John, the shaper is still my favourite machine, you can do a lot with a shaper and there not slow like people say, I hope you do get one because you will enjoy every time you use it, cheers. Matty
Well done mate...brings back a lot of great memories when I was a second year apprentice about 30 years ago going to Tafe we made a pair all hardened and ground......I miss them everyday i should make a new set we've got an Elliot shaper at work.
Nice bee blocks, the shaper is a rare machine, can’t find one atm in aus, something very satisfying watching a shaper at work Great content matty on yer
Gday, there was an 18” shaper for sale on gumtree, not sure if it’s still there or not, they do pop up there from time to time, thanks for watching mate, cheers
Hi Matty, I wonder if you could mount a little Brush on the front of the Shaper to push the Chips out of the way? It does a Great Job without it. Great Job as always. 👍 The Shaper sure is a nice Machine to have in the Shop. It always gets a perfect finish looks like.
Hi Sir, I have one of these which I acquired from the Sydney Bus Museum several years ago. When I got it home I stripped what I needed to get it going and gave everything the once over. Sadly since then I have been very I’ll and after a couple of lengthy stays in hospital I am ok again and want to continue a full restoration of it. I heard you mention a tool kit, I have a couple of levers but was wondering if you could make a video on your RUclips channel explaining the tools you have and also how to properly alter the length of stroke. Many thanks, Gordie
Hi, I just bought such a machine :) Almost a week has been standing still not unloaded from the car :( Regards from Poland , Paweł. P.S. What I could, I left on your interesting channel;)
Gday, on the reverse stroke of the ram the table will tri verse across, minimum is .0005” up to .0035” and can go either way left or right, some shapers have auto down feed on the compound, mine is manual on the down feed, every time the ram goes back you just tweak the handle a touch, thanks for stopping by, Matty
I love the shaper. It does some of the most beautiful work.
Certainly does, it’s really the favourite machine here, appreciate you watching mate, Cheers

Nice little V blocks, I made myself a pair like that a while back and they've been invaluable for machining stuff on the shaper and mill.
Nicely done! Those will be a handy size of matched blocks for you. Nice surface finish too!
Cracking job on those Vee Blocks and that is kind of the perfect job to do on a shaper. Cheers, Alan.

Sounds like there's some slop between the sliding block and yoke when the ram is reversing.
I would love to see the grinds on your tool bits
Gday, next time the shaper is in a video I’ll try and remember to show the tool grind, Cheers

I'd absolutely love one mate, and a surface grinder too
Problem is I'm on an absolute shoe string
Nice! Next project, build some clamps for the blocks and mode the blocks with slots.
Gday Paul, I have had thoughts about doing that and that maybe a good project in the future, thanks for watching and I’m glad you enjoyed, ATB Matty
